Traore, Sagna, Eboue, Vermaelen, Djourou, Squillaci, Koscielny, (Clichy) all speak French. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, but these are all players that he signed, as opposed to Gibbs (the only defender who speaks a different language) who was an academy graduate. It seems more like he imposes these restrictions than it being a coincidence.

And yes, Song is a good player

I had no clue that Vermaelen and Djourou spoke French. I can understand Djourou because he's been at the club so long, but not Vermaelen. I actually just looked it up and had no clue that German and French are both official languages of Belgium and Switzerland.

So Baines could replace Clichy at Arsenal. Baines is the best left back in PL, imo.

Yeah he would be a great signing but who knows what Arsene is going to do. I could totally see Gibbs taking over and getting hurt immediately, leaving us with only Traore as backup. He's decent, but nowhere near as good. I am interested in Emilio Izaguirre. I have not seen him play, but he was SPL's player of the season last year and I have heard good things about him. I am sure Celtic would like to hold onto him, but he would probably leave if we came calling, and he would definitely be cheaper than Baines, but then again, he is unproven in the PL.

Well if you look at our squad we kind of have a guy like that already and that is Wilshere. I think in a few years he could easily captain the side, but I don't think he quite has the maturity yet.

Different kind of player though, surely? Wilshire has some future ahead of him, but he's definitely a more creative and attacking outlet. I wouldn't say he was anything like the same holding midfielder role that Viera vacated.

Emilio is waiting for someone to make a formal offer, his contract with Celtic is a joke atm (he's the less paid player). So he can move to other club or just renew his contract with Celtic with a decent pay. Manchester Utd is going to have a meeting with Celtic in mid July, according to my country press (Honduras). Liverpool is also interested.

Yeah, but I was talking more in the leadership aspect. I do agree we need that midfield presence that Vieira had, and while Song is very good in that position, he doesn't have Vieira's clout. I can't really think of any players out there right now who would fit that bill. I think Yohan M'Vila would be a great player for us, but I am not so sure he's Vieira-like.

I don't think it's entirely fair to say he imposes these restrictions at all. Bendtner, Rosicky, and Djourou also speak German, so is it fair to imply Eboue and Djourou were acquired for there understanding of French? As far as the other players go - Arsene is a Frenchman he has great understanding for the French division and its youth structure, paired with the price-tags on the players there its only logical from him to dip his toes in those waters. Many other managers are also 'guilty' of this.

We should jump on that I say. He would be fairly cheaper, and Arsenal offer good wages. United don't need him, and I think our current situation would prove more beneficial to him than Liverpool's.

Yeah the French League is one of the ones not putting gigantic price tags on players. I mean Gervinho for the 11 million rumored, or however much it is, is about 10 million less than if he had come from England.

good squad players are hard to find, especially ones like O'shea who can play well in multiple positions.

The reward being a chunk of the wage bill being freed.

Quite a strong rumour atm but I can't see it. Don't think he and Gyan would make a good partnership either.

All the more reason for Gyan to go the other way.

Hello Soccer/football gaf! I've started to get into soccer, but don't know too terribly much about the different leagues and teams and anything else like that..

So I was just stopping in to get any recommendations of teams to watch or leagues and just some general info on where to start!

English Premier League, German Bundesliga and Italian Serie A are the best leagues atm.

Champions League is a tournament where the best teams of all the European Leagues (like, the best 3-4 teams of English Premier League, 3 best of German Bundesliga, etc) face each others. It's the best football tournament (Yes, better than the World Cup).

You should choose a team. Maybe you can look for a team with USA players, so it will be more easy to like-follow that team.

I would honestly say just go pick up a copy of FIFA. That's how I got into soccer about 6 years ago. FIFA and Wikipedia are your friend.

I would recommend this, this is how I started learning more about the other European leagues and teams when I was younger.

I think for Americans (I'm assuming you're American) trying to get into the sport, the best league for you is going to be the Premier League.
Which team you pick is up to you, but if you want to watch your team play often then I'd probably suggest going with one of Man United, Chelsea, Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal or Spurs since they're likely to get the most coverage.

Also, here's some videos to get you hyped...

follow serie a and the exploits of ac milan, led by soon to be legendary striker alexandre pato.

in all seriousness, i do recommend serie a, it is quite an interesting league with a good variety of styles and a lot of english coverage as well.

also, play football manager.

I personally can't stand Italian football. It's much more defensive and slower going. I also hate AC, but then again, that's just personal preference.

But yeah, if you want to watch a club, you're going to have to pick someone who's going to be on. German games are shown very rarely here and French games are not shown period (someone enlighten me if I am wrong). If you are going to go the Italian route, choose Inter, AC Milan, Juventus or Roma. They tend to not show the other teams, but they almost always show the Inter and AC games. Spain is either Real Madrid or Barcelona. They show all of their games, but I would suggest you not go this way as everyone will pretty much stamp you a glory hunter, especially since you're just now getting into the sport. TBH, you could probably pick any team at this point and find a stream to watch on the internet.

Seriously though, buy a copy of FIFA. Pick a team and simply dive in.

League One is a good division. Keep an eye out for Sheffield Wednesday..

*cough*

In all seriousness, you should probably watch The English Premierleague and the German Bundesliga. Even though I live in England the Bundesliga is probably my favourite top division in the world. I've got abit of a crush on Borussia Dortmund. It's a nice and open division and I also believe it's probably the best league in the world to actually spectate, taking various things into consideration.

support your border brother and their national team (Mexico) and their league.
Better competition and better tournaments for MEX clubs.

Also, just watch a handful of games from known club teams like FC Barceona, Juventus, Chivas of Guadalajara, Manchester United and Real Madrid competing in friendlies in the USA.

Think he is going to sign a LB because of Gibbs injury record. Shame as Gibbs has said he wants assurances on his future. We have a Brazilian LB Botelho who has been on loan in Spain for 3 years, think he qualifies for a work permit this season. Have read that Wenger is going to give him a few games in preseason to see if he is ready for the first team.

I didn't know if Botelho had a work permit yet (work permits are some of the dumbest things ever). I have heard nothing of Botelho and he keeps playing for league 2 sides in Spain. Maybe he will be really good, but part of me just wants a signing.

Daniel Alves has urged Cesc Fabregas to force through his move to Barcelona this summer.

The Brazilian told Spanish radio station RAC-1: "I understand that he doesn't want to leave Arsenal on bad terms but I can understand why he would force a move to Barca.”

He added: “Players always end up playing where they want to play and a club shouldn't keep an unhappy player."

Alves likened the midfielder’s situation to his time at Sevilla when he pushed for a transfer to Barcelona in 2008.

"I forced my exit from Sevilla; I saw the train passing by and I wanted to be in business class,” he said.
