Isn't this part of the problem though? To play Rooney, Kagawa and RVP,you either play Rooney up top with RVP, in a roughly 4-2-2-2 and be exposed on the left (since Kagawa is is only really good in the middle) and have Rooney moan because he doesn't like playing as a striker.
Or have your system where Rooney is where he wants to be and you aren't exposed down one side, but at the expense of Kagawa (who is generally quite poor on the wing).

Thinking about it, I think your hole left side could do with an overhaul (after your core midfielders though, that area is much more of a priority).
