Yep. Ref couldn't have seen in it through all the bodies, whereas the linesman had the best line of sight to spot it. Before contact, you had no idea who was going to reach the ball first. Usually defenders leave the attacking player to avoid a collision that could be interpreted as a foul

By the way, does anybody know why France always had a crappy league compared to other European countries? You'd think that such a big country like France would have league on par with Spain or Italy, or at least Germany. Yet, only one of their teams has won the Champion's League. Much smaller countries like Portugal and the Netherlands have a much better track record than them.

Well, they also never had success on national level before Platini & then at the WC in their country in 98.
