Khedira is shit but he adds more to your team than Madrid fans give him credit for. You can't just put Isco in there, Illarraflopdi hasn't really been that convincing when I've seen him either.
Alonso needs a worker/tackler like Masch/Khedira next to him to play at his best imo.
I just found the number of goals to be a not-so-relevant fact to show how good a player is. Gomez is the perfect example of that.

A bit of both probably, but it's pretty obvious that whilst it's easier to get fouls today, the defenders are still a lot better than ever before; more athletic, more tactically aware, know when its best to stay on their feet, etc.
