What is the reasoning behind Rooney in midfield and ADM up front? Should it not be the other way round?

It is potentially not a bad idea. Start off with ADM up front, then getting him to drop deep and drag the CB out of position, which should create space for Rooney to get in behind the CBs. But so far they are just too static.

People will say the formation is the problem, and it's definitely not helping - but the actual problem IMO is that Van Gaal wants us to play a patient style where we build up play at the back and then move it quicker as we get into the final third. But these players can't do that. Rooney can't do anything quickly, Mata is slow on the ball, the CB's are hopeless. Just a complete disconnect between what Van Gaal wants and what these players are capable of doing.
