Former Subway spokesman Jared Fogle to plead guilty to child pornography charges

Question: based on what you've said and the severity of the absolutely deplorable actions of it's soon-to-be-officially ex-mascot, what do you think is most likely to happen to the chain.

My worry is those struggling stores that have franchisees barely making ends this; these are people with families and this could destroy them financially, all because of the deplorable, illegal, actions of a mascot they never met.

Again, only a fool would defend Jared's action's (child pornography is a deplorable and ugly evil thing), I'm talking soley about the company and the families that live because of it.

This is one of those things where I really don't have a meaningful response. I don't think it's random franchisee #573's fault that things turned out this way. And I'm not encouraging people to boycott for that matter either. But I'm just saying that I understand why these things happen. If the Jared campaign can be responsible for the company profiting when he seems like a Joe Everyman that anyone overweight can aspire to match, then it only makes sense that his fall could hurt the company. I'm not saying it should, but this is just the sort of thing that happens.

Similar arguments would crop up when discussing places like Chick Fil-A. "What about the employees that don't share the owner's views?" My assessment there was pretty much what it is here. Firstly, I think people should support or not support these establishments for whatever reason makes sense to them. Secondly, it's not productive for us to consider all the harm we as consumers might be doing by not buying something. It would be fiscally irresponsible of me to lament all the worthy people I'm not supporting right now by typing this message instead of buying something. And as such, it doesn't really make sense to think about all these franchisees. If I go down that path, what do I do about all the fine people at (Insert Subway competitor here) when I continue to buy Subway sandwiches instead of going there?

Barring some prior criminal misconduct, what sort of proper vetting would result in an employer being made aware of something like this?

There may not have been anything they could have done. Maybe there was no indication that Jared could ever do such a heinous thing. But people often aren't inclined to give such a benefit of the doubt. Also, they were still using Jared in ads as recently as this year. Despite the best of efforts, one can't use someone's image for over a decade and then cut ties neatly and swiftly when something like this happens. Whether it's fair to Subway or not, there's no way that Jared's actions aren't going to have an impact on Subway to a lot of people.

Wow, Trey Parker and Matt Stone must be clairvoyant. The only episode of South Park ever pulled from the air was about Jared and was pulled due to a depiction of child abuse. This was over 10 years ago. Coincidence, or did they sense something was off with this Jared guy?

Also, fuck Jared, what a POS. In retrospect, he's always had that Dylan Baker in Happiness vibe.

If that stuff about Subway having a heads up on this turns out to be true... damn.

To be fair it isn't pedophilia and doesn't involve Jared. It's Butter's being beaten by his parents.

They probably knew, the network probably did as well.

Probably why it never aired.

edit: nvm the post above seems to clarify everything lol

Yeah, it wasn't Jared as the abuser, but it's still a weird a coincidence to me. I always had this loose association with Jared and child abuse from that episode and the fallout when it aired for the only time. Also, I know it wasn't your intention, but let's not split hairs on different kinds of child abuse since they're all repulsive.

Never eating at Subway again, and I'm damn sure a lot of people won't either. Their stock and sales are going to take a HUGE hit from this.

People said the exact same thing about Chick-fil-a following the Dan Cathy stuff and yet they're doing just fine. Every single store I pass is packed from morning to close.

Subway will be fine. They distanced themselves from Jared almost immediately and he's also been less of a spokesman for them of late. The only ad I can recall seeing him in during the last year or more was an animated one. Most of their ad campaigns have been those athlete based ads.

Let's be realistic: Most people aren't going to care and will keep going to Subway if they were so inclined anyway.

Man, I cannot imagine how much of a panic Subway execs are in right now. Their entire company is tied to a pedophile in the public's mind.

That "Eat Fresh" tagline has got to go ASAP. It will be the butt of pedophile jokes for years to come. I'm already seeing it online.

Even if they get rid of it now, it's going to take months for that stuff to cycle out of their inventory (cups, napkins, signs, etc.) in addition to years of mindshare they've built up with that tagline.

This marketing campaign with Jared is something that really propelled the Subway brand to new heights. I can't imagine how badly this is going to hurt them.

Well he did live by his slogan of "Eat Fresh"

But anyway I hope he gets put away for awhile. The dude is sick.

I like Subway I eat there atleast once a week. I cant really blame this on Subway as they never knew his dark secrets.

That's not the only episode of southpark to ever be pulled. They no longer air either Mohammad episode, as an example.

Serious question time.

Anyone here that eats at Subway going to stop eating at subway because of this Jared Fogle thing?

No, I'll continue eating at subway whenever it takes my fancy.

Holy shit.

I did it before, but I want to publically recant my "giving Jared the benefit of the doubt" back 2 or 3 months ago when this story first came out. I thought the investigation had to do with his former Exec of his foundation, but that it wouldn't be about him. I was dead wrong.

Jesus.

Should give corporations pause before nominating a "regular guy" to be the face and spokesman of the company. Introduces a lot of risk because even though this guy lost 200lbs eating your sandwiches, he could also be a scum bag.

I don't eat at Subway often, but no, this absolutely does not change my opinion of the company. Jared was a guy in their advertisements, but that's about it (as far as I know)... And Subway moved away from him quickly when this shit broke. They didn't do anything wrong other than associate themselves with a "regular customer" who also happens to be a pervert.

Nothing wrong with giving Jared the benefit of the doubt. Based on the news reported at the time, he was in the clear.

What a crazy twist! Thinking back to him being the face of Subway and his whole appeal as a genuine nice guy/every man. It reminds of Tiger Woods, where the media persona is absolutely shattered by who they really are.

The Associated Press is reporting that he will pay 14 victims $100,000 each.

1,400,000 in total huh? Public image ruined, sex offender status, and a million from his pocket with half a decade at least in jail. I hope you get help, Jared, because your life is effectively fucked by your own decisions.

So happy to see that even with a plea deal, he's going to be doing a lot of time. I doubt anyone enjoys prison time, but people that commit his crimes most definitely do not enjoy their time in prison. Sick fuck.

He's rich and famous. He won't be going to a regular prison. It will probably just be like a long vacation for him.

No. His actions should not have a bearing on the corporate image. As far as we know, Subway had no involvement in or no idea about Fogle's pedophilia. Boycotting Subway because of him is ridiculous.

what he did

The Associated Press reports that federal prosecutors allege in a document released Wednesday that Fogle traveled to pay for sex acts with minors while he stayed in upscale hotels, and received child pornography that he knew had been secretly produced by Taylor. An agreement filed ahead of an expected court appearance by Fogle said he will pay $1.4 million in restitution to 14 minor victims, who will each receive $100,000. Fogle will also be required to register as a sex offender and undergo treatment for sexual disorders, the AP said.

Goddamit. I was gonna eat at subway today for lunch.... it seems weird to eat there so soon....

Why is he even getting a plea deal?

According to the docs, it said he traveled to seek out sex with minors. Unless I am mistaken, it does not state he actually went through with it. Might that be a reason?

Still a garbage person mind you, no one is saying otherwise, no one is defending pedo actions.

Wasn't there a female employee tangled up in this mess, too? What hsppened to her?

I thought she reported his weird comments (something about suggesting a three way to her) to Subway officials?

Sounds like he went through with it at least in New York. And if he has to pay ten different individuals, I'm guessing he sure as hell went through with it other places.!
