Is there some technique needed to be learned in order to scale images without having them come out dis proportionate for the avatar requirements?

Trying to make some avatars that don't look really warped vertically or horizontally but GIMP is failing me.

You just need to crop the image to the right proportion. I couldn't just scale the picture of the Asian girl down to 90x120 because it was too long, I had to crop it to get the proportion right first.

Looks fine in photoshop, looks fine in firefox. Chrome has always had bad gif handling.

So I've been messing around again trying to make an avatar. I tried to cut down the size while making it recognizable, and I tried to mess around with frame disposal and at the end of the day the file was over 400kb :(

How do you guys manage to get the file-size down so low? am I using too many frames and how to I go about getting rid of them? share your secrets with me, wise avatar masters.

Oh, and I'm working on GIMP version 2.6.8

What program are you using? I use jasc animation shop and theres an option called "Cull Animation" which lets you cut out every x number of frames. Like every third frame or something. Then you also cut down the quality of the image when saving.

PS. who is that? Reminds me of a pornstar whos name I can't remember..

If you want to take a stab at it feel free. I also had another .gif that's longer, if you think you can somehow make it into a proper avatar you can test your skill

I'm using gimp. Judging from some of the avatars I'm seeing and some of weekend_warrior's work, it has something to do with the colors. I just don't know how I can mess around with them to cut down file size.

Girl's name is Tiffany Star btw

76 frames is way too fucking many frames unless theres hardly anything changing from frame to frame. I also reduced the colors from 144 to 130, and used a "gif optimizer" option to further reduce the file size. 147.9kb

How do you do that? Colors>threshold?

No. When you convert an image from RGB to indexed in GIMP it lets to pick the maximum number of colors. So if you have an indexed image (like what you posted) go to [Image]>[Mode]>[RGB], then take the RGB image and go to [Image]>[Mode]>[Indexed] and pick the max colors you want.

This is normally a pretty inefficient way to reduce file size, so I normally only do it as a last resort after I reduce an image to about 20-30kb and don't want to take out anymore frames.

oooh okay, but you said you used an optimizing option right? did you do optimize(difference) or optimize(for gif)? when I tried optimizing for .gif I got this white stuff all over the image.

And if you've got time to explain I'd also like to know how you edited out some if any of the frames

I manually go through and delete frames. Delete 2, leave 1, delete 2, leave 1, etc. I don't think theres an easy way to do it in GIMP. Helps if you map commands to your keyboard so you don't have to keep clicking shit.

I always use optimize for difference, I think it works better the optimize for gif. If you get a bunch of white static when you do that, make sure when you save it you select the option to "combine frames" and not "replace frames".

Thanks a lot man, I think I'm now closer to making good avatars.

This isnt a request but more of a question...is my avatar allowed? I recall that the image was either banned, or was it simply that smiley faces in posts were disabled?

I dont see why it would be banned if it has the right dimensions(90x120) maybe you mean the :lol smileys

I was wondering if someone better than me could resize this in order to fit the avatar standards?

It seems a bit wide, and I'd like to keep as much of Agumon and the chip bag as possible.

hey weekend what do you use to cut your videos?

Huh? I use a program called 'Capture Me' to record my screen when I play back videos that people want GIFed.
