Forza 3 vs Gran Turismo 5 Comparison Thread of John, Chapter 11, Verse 35

one thing i hate about forza though is the innacurate models, looking through that link you posted i saw the f40 which is modelled to perfection, same with the enzo

i think t10 need to remodel all the old cars, its not about polygon size its about accuracy

PD does all their modeling inhouse, and that's a major factor in why they're so accurate. That's also seen by some as being PD's biggest flaw. They have a 160 or so people doing everything (modeling, physics, online etc). No outsourcing. That's why it takes them so long and that why they only have 200+ premium models.

... Forza 4 and Forza 3 are the two highest ranked racing sims this generation. These are the facts...
Racing sims? I'm sorry but until I see a proper use of 900 degree wheel in Forza then I will consider it to be a sim, until then, in my mind, it will always be a casual racing game, it's leaning more towards Shift games then towards GT.

i believe they should scrap the GT4 models, they dont belong on GT5 and they bring the game down. 1000 cars isnt needed anyway, for GT6 i think they should aim for 400 or so premium cars and that would be fine

play the forza 4 demo with sim steering, its a huge improvement over 3

That's probably what will happen given the reaction to the standard models. They don't bother me (especially since they use GT5's physics engine), but it's pretty clear that they were received negatively for the most part.

There are other direct-feed grabs for both games that look better than those imgur comparison pics though.

Same as in F3, the game looks 'gamey' and the cars still look like they are made out of plastic. Nothing wrong with that but I prefer the more realistic look of GT5.

Maybe it is, but there is still assistance that helps you to correct the car when you "lose your butt" so you don't need to fight your wheel, to dig deeper into this, this is probably done because of that kinect wheel, you can't spin it in your hands, the max you can do is probably 360 degrees so assistance was needed to be included because you would never recover from a drift with that wheel in your hands.

I don't get this comment, outside of photomode gt5 looks 'gamey' aswell, more so because of the non premium cars.

The 900 degree bug appears to be just that, a bug, not an assist.

By Kinect wheel, do you mean the Kinect driving mode (no controller) or do you mean the Speed Wheel controller which has nothing to do with Kinect?

Tried the demo? It looks really good in motion.

It's funny that that "bug" appears across all Forza games.

That speed wireless wheel was what I meant, I don't know how it functions really, that's why I put the word kinect.

Holy fuck @ this thread.

Totally unrelated question: does anyone know the average age of a typical GAFfer?
We had many 'how old are you' thread in the OT, the average must be something around 27 years old I think.

Any comparisons on how Forza 4 drives compared to GT5?
Haven't seen one and frankly it's hard to know who trust with that anyway. I'd listen to G Rom if he didn't stay away from this thread.

I'd love to see you hold your arms out with an imaginary wheel and then spin that wheel 360 degrees. You'd need a Kinect avatar for that :p

My understanding is that it functions as if you are turning a smarthphone, but with buttons as well. While I thought it would be terrible, every thing we have heard form GAFers who have tried it is that it works really well; not as good as a full wheel setup, but better than a controller.

I counted both directions but you're right, you need to turn your shoulders and the body to do that ;)

I've always thought it was awful. It got amusing for a while when it was announced that 800 of the cars in GT5 would be ripped straight out of GT4, some tracks included.

All of a sudden it "didn't matter" :lol

Still, I have a soft spot for the GT series; first sim I played :)

How can that bug appear on all Forza games ? :p
Damn, forgot about that XD

btw the new thread tittle should be "Official Forza 3, Forza 4, [RESERVED] vs Gran Turismo 5 Comparison Thread of John, Chapter 11, Verse 35 Reply to Thread" :D

Yea, Forza 4 has improved over 3 but it's still not as good as GT5. GT5's lighting and models are as good as they come - probably the benchmark moving into Nextgen.

I don't recall a big fuss being made over it... perhaps I'm glossing over it? It was a while ago :p

Yes, you're definitely glossing over it. It got a ton of (warranted) flak for the inclusion of shitty car models, no doubt about it.

No night races, dynamic time of day or weather?
-3 laps.

Also where is Dan whats his name? For Forza 3 he was all over the media, with definitive this definitive that... what happened to him? Did MS tell him to shut up or something?
We need new material to work with...After all, who can forget this gem.

“So, props to Kazunori Yamauchi-san and the PS1 team. That said, I feel that he’s passed us the baton. Perhaps he hasn’t meant to, but we have taken the genre to new levels and they’ve stopped evolving the genre. So again, tremendous respect to him, but I’d say the differentiator is they’re old school. The emperor’s naked, and I don’t want to, you know, I don’t want to slap him around, but no game competes [with] us right now.”

lol

Dynamic time is the feature I'd miss the most. I just wish GT had it on more tracks as it just adds so much when you're doing 20 laps on the same track. Seeing the dashboard clocks frozen at 11:59 makes me a sad panda. Hopefully that is coming down the road. I can understand T10 skipping weather as that is pretty hard to get right, but skipping on dynamic time is weird.

Did The Beard really refer to PD as "the PS1 team"? That is pretty insulting and show a real lack of respect. Kaz should do an interview and refer to Turn 10 as "That American team... what's their name... help me out here Translator-San. Yeah that's right "1st Turn Mayhem" at Microsoft" :D

Wait, is that true? No weather, time changes or Porsches? Or is it some trolling attempt?
It's true, time has something to do with their new lighting engine "IBL". Weather wasn't done because Dan said they didn't have enough time to do it right.

Porsches aren't included because EA are assholes and think we'll buy Shift just to drive Porsches.

they had time, but they wasted it on autovista

Yeah, I love that they finally took a step forward and made it possible even if it's only on a handful of tracks. We know that should be just the beginning... I can't wait for a GT6 where every race has dynamic time on every track (even on A-spec). A whole new level of immersion and possibilities :D Dynamic time + dynamic weather can make a single track feel like 3 or 4.

Just because GT has it doesn't mean all other games are gonna have it too.

No way, if anything IBL would make it easier.

Autovista looks good and I can see people drooling a lot over that when the game is new, but down the road it's the racing that matters. And to give T10 credit they seem to have focused on that aspect a lot this time.

Serious question: can you do long (as in 2 hours or more) races in Forza?

As much as that makes sense, that was the reason Greenawalt used when asked about it:

Now, that's totally possible on the Xbox 360, but it means the specialists we have in graphics would need to work on that problem, and it would be a hard problem. The hard problem we chose to take on with our graphics this version was Image Based Lighting, and working with Hollywood. Every version, we look at this long list of features we would do, and they are divided into these different autonomous groups that have the specialists that could actually do it. We just can't take a network developer and say, hey, why don't you do a new particle system. It's not that they're smart guys, but we hired them because they are so good at delivering network code.

Maybe it was me who misunderstood it though.

Kaz and Dan looked friendly before "PS1 team comment" :)

I should probably ask this in the Forza thread, but was there any reasons given to why FM4 doesn't have weather/night racing/rally etc when it was basically implied in the original teaser trailer?

So he basically sidestepped the question altogether...

Oh yeah Forza, by the way. Your logo sucks. Take that, T10!
