There was a very similar mechanism in FM3. I tried it then and decided it wasn't for me (seemed a bit half-baked). Maybe it's more fully cooked now.

I doubt that will work-- one of the reasons to use layers of prebaked shapes is that you just have to transmit which shape, which colour, position, etc rather than an entire image, when you race online. Even with 5000 layers, it doesn't add up to much.
