Forza 4 |OT| Where Porsche Are Driven

Got the new videos up:

50 Days of (Green) Hell Day 43 - AMG Mercedes CLK GTR

First things first: if you have not driven this car in Forza 4 yet, stop what you are doing and go drive it NOW! This car is almost perfect in every way. That AMG V12 sounds like pure automotive porn and it looks both gorgeous and evil. Then you finally start to drive it and you fall even more in love. It can handle the track better than you can actually drive it. I almost hated the car at first because I felt like I just was not able to drive it well enough. I just felt like the car deserved a better driver and I was unable to really take it to that 10/10ths. But after a bit, you realize the car is just simply amazing. The brakes have to be some of the best in the game and the car actually responds to trailbraking instead of flinging you into the trees. This car is stunning and everyone needs to go take it for a quick drive to really understand what it is capable of.

50 Days of (Green) Hell Guest Drive 40 - Chevrolet #4 Corvette Racing C6.R

Dead Poul driving the impressive and brutal C6.R. I love the sound of this car and he really thrashes the hell out of it.

It's a bit contradictory isn't it?

Bathurst and Spa in FM4?--Confidential
Any DLC tracks?- Unconfirmed

And if they do give us Lime Rock over the much more requested SpaHurst, i'm going to go on a murderous rampage and I will blame Turn 10 for it.

Actually, i'll blame it on BADNED because he promised me an Aussie track. You promised meeee..eeee.ee.e! cries..

The best thing about this is the laser scanning part. They better fly to Europe to laser scan the Nürburgring (Nordschleife+GP) and the Circuit de la Sarthe at least.
Also maybe we'll finally get updates for all tracks in FM5. I'm pretty sure that aside from the ALMS tracks, all the other tracks are outdated in FM4 (grand stand at Suzuka, pit wing at Silverstone, Nürburgring GP chicane, etc...).

I wonder what kind of budget is allocated to track rights acquisition and related work.
Surely that hits the pockets hardest doesn't it?

I seem to recall Dan saying in an interview that getting tracks wasn't really a problem as most track owners were really cool about it and were more just excited to have their track in the game. I don't see track rights acquisition as a huge cost. Dev time required for a track is surely pretty big relative to other features of the game though.

laser scan all the things imo
That would be the dream...

Also, track licensing is dirt cheap (relative to a big budget game like Forza) :
TJP75 on Forzacentral said:
Licencing is not a pain or overly costly according to Ian Bell on the WMD forums. From what I recall, most track licences aren't as expensive as people believe; the maximum SMS had been asked for a track licence was $50K. Building a track from scratch is another issue entirely and is most likely where the cost really comes from. It may also explain why CARS has many tracks lifted from the GTR and Shift series

how about a national parks DLC track pack?

ex. Going to the Sun Road, P2P - Glacier NP
who wouldnt want to race this stunner in (insert car of choice)?

The REAL question should be how much time, resources and money is wasted by different developers all creating their own 3D CAD models of the same tracks (and cars, for that matter). All the planet needs is ONE correct, definitive, laser-scanned model of each environment and each vehicle. Different developers then simply licence the models from the owner.
BOOM.
No more faffing about for months on end reinventing the wheel, no more incorrect Enzo noses, and no more fucking arguments about the width of the Nordschliefe.

This makes so much sense for so many reasons it will NEVER happen.

Maybe one day?
Whay annoys me is when they state that the manufacturers get all hissy about the accuracy of their cars being in-game and then each iteration has the same faults as the last FFS.
Truth is it's all about who spends the most money.

Count me in.

I love the variety of bends and turns in Forza's tracks, but circuits themselves are very visually unappealing, and that eventually drags things down for me. Of course the tracks Forza makes up from whole cloth look pretty damn nice.

The most stellar audio/visual driving experience this generation for me has to be speeding through GT5's Nordschleiffe in the dead of night while slowly transitioning to daybreak. Absolutely glorious and worth the price of admission alone (and the only reason I turn it on from time to time now). If I could hold anything up to Turn 10 as inspiration, it would be that.

Amen, brother. A truly epic experience. Awe-inspiring, even.

50 Days of (Green) Hell Day 44 - BMW 1 Series M Coupe

I have been disappointed with the evolution of the M3 from a lightweight corner-carver into an overweight luxury sports car, but this car has made me have some faith in BMW again. This is the true spiritual successor to the E30 M3, and a better "M3" than the last couple generations. It is light, nimble, understated and with just enough horsepower to have fun. No V8 needed here, just a brilliant I6 with the perfect amount of power and torque. This car is the definition of driving fun and I hope the lap shows it. This car is so easy to drive fast and it will respond immediately to whatever you want it to do. There is a reason BMWs are called "The Ultimate Driving Machines" and this car just proves that at every corner.

50 Days of (Green) Hell Guest Drive 41 - Ford GT

I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said about the 1M. That car is the shit! And it sounds MEAN!

IIRC, some tracks already provide laser scanned version as part of the licensing.
Also, again IIRC, some manufacturers provide CADs as well.

I've got the Scud Race livery for the McLaren and F40, I just searched for 'Scud' in the storefronts.

There's a couple of each iirc, one looked better than the other but I'm not sure how accurate they both are.

They both look awesome. Who did those? I can probably search for this guy's storefront and pluck 'em from there.

50 Days of (Green) Hell Day 45 - Dodge Shelby Omni GLHS

Neal Stephenson described the Dodge Omni thusly: "Sure, spend three times as much and you could get a car that goes a little faster, but who is seriously going to thrash a vehicle that costs that much? Who'll risk denting it? But if it's an Omni, who cares?" And he was right, this car was the perfect little sleeper. It didn't look dangerous or even interesting, but that little 4 banger would move that car faster than most people would expect. This is the dad to the Neon SRT/4 in many ways and it drives more competently than even the designed expected. You can thrash this car around and it just enjoys it. The ratios are a bit longer than they should be, but it sounds like no other 4 cylinder in the game. Throaty and mean, with just a hint of exhaustion; like the engine is tuned to the absolute limit. This is a great, fun car and this lap was a blast.

Just wanted to say that I've been loving these videos Shortt. They're much appreciated and I've even learned some techniques from watching the various ways people attack the Nordschleiffe.

If you're looking to do more of these after the first 50 days what do you think of Fujimi Kaido? Its another long, gorgeous track that could showcase a variety of different driving styles and techniques. Just a suggestion as it seems I've needed to put as much time and effort into learning that monster as I have with the Nordschleiffe.

That and I'd like to see some drift action for those who have the chops. Trying to break my teeth on those techniques lately, and its a ton of fun to experiment with.

I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said about the 1M. That car is the shit! And it sounds MEAN!
And holy shit, you guys weren't joking. The thing is so responsive it almost feels like cheating.

Oh and one random question for Forza vets out there. When racing (say in career), do you prefer to take a stock setup for a car that matches the class requirements, or upgrade a lower class car? I've almost always run with stock cars for a class but am just now starting to get into more upgrades and basic tuning (tire compound, adjustable suspension, alignment tweaks) and while I can tweak things to my liking I still get outclassed in terms of top speed a lot of the time. Any advice?

I am glad you are enjoying them man. They have been a blast to do, but I am definitely going to take a short break after I finish the 50. It takes me multiple hours each day to race, record, edit, process, upload, update, etc. So I am looking forward to taking a short break and actually PLAYING Forza again!

But I like the idea of using Kaido next. I love that course and it would be fun in the lower HP cars that wouldn't work on The Ring. I will definitely consider it.

Didn't know you didn't have a guest driver. Will add today.

Yeah, I didn't even realize I was out until I was working on this one last night. I thought I had more, but it appears I am out of Guest Drivers! I only need another 8 videos to finish up the Guest Drives.

I was lucky enough to get a code last night, so I am going to probably finish the last 5 cars with DLC cars. I haven't decided what car should be my 50th run. Should it be the Venom or the Sprinter Van?

Always upgrade and tune. Almost never race something I've not thrown race suspension and brakes on.

As for top speed, there are very few tracks where that's as important as handling.

Sounds like a solid plan. And it actually works out to be more fun when you take the time to personalize a set of cars.

I agree. The first things I do with a new car are:

1) Suspension
2) Brakes
3) Weight Reduction
4) Tires

And then I mess with power/transmission/etc after those. I would rather have a light, underpowered car that screams around corners than a heavy, too-powerful car that can't stop spinning it's tires.

Yea, I'm hopping on now to drive about three or so cars. I haven't been able to sit down with Seanspeed about the Top Gear lap, but I'd still really like to do this. Sorry, I just realized Bioshock 2 was in my collection and I just have fell in love all over again.

Can't blame you there man! BioShock has to be one of my favorite series in video games, right behind Fallout. The 2nd one was pretty good, but the first is still the best. The DLC for 2 was incredible though, so make sure you grab that. Minerva's Den I think it was called.

All I know is I get free cars every once in a while automagically. Don't know whether that's VIP status, Limited Edition perks, Turn 10 being nice, or some rivals mode awards for events I've forgotten about.

Either way it works out well.

1-Suspension
2-Transmission
3-Tires
4-Differential
5-Camshaft

That's basically my 'go to' upgrades. I like having control over my gearing and handling characteristics. The camshaft does shift the power band but it's easily corrected with shorter diff gears depending on power range.
What I love about Forza is how every tiny adjustment in the tuning can either increase or hamper performance. I mean, you can have the perfect suspension hardness but if you add just a tiny more, it can completely ruin the setup. I really admire this aspect.
Some games, the incremental changes in tuning are too wide before any difference is felt, not so with Forza.

I am very, very slowly going through the process of learning about upgrades. And being the tech geek I am I just have to truly understand the real world physics at work and picture how the adjustments alter things in my mind before I'll even consider messing with those sliders. And its for exactly the reason you specify - its easy to screw things up.

So, tire compounds I understand. I also understand the basics of alignment but it can still be tricky to know which adjustments to make based upon feedback in game, although adjusting camber and toe seems relatively straight-forward. Same with differentials. I grock the concept, but I have a hard time "feeling" what adjustments I need to make just from in-game feedback.

No matter how much time I put into this game I still feel like I'm only scratching the surface, and that's mostly a positive ;P

Just making sure you also got the video for the 360 Modena. If not i can gift it again. I stalk the google doc. (O)_(O)

You did receive a unicorn in your inbox, right? Some kind of skyline?

I didn't pull the 3rd replay from you yet, so I am sure it is the Modena.

And I have no Unicorn of the R32 variety. lol

Really?! I sent jube that list, and he assured me this morning that they were sent off. I included you in that and because mine was delivered, i was sure yours was too. Give ol Jube a message about it on ForzaCentral. He's anticipating PMs over there.

I hope we start getting some news/leaks about the Porsche pack soon. The wait is killing me!

Nice if they do a little feature with some hints about what cars will be new this time around.

50 Days of (Green) Hell Day 46 - Austin-Healey 3000 MkIII

This is THE definition of a British Roadster. RWD, light, 2 seater, convertible and just enough horsepower to have fun. This is nowhere near the fastest car in the game, but it doesn't matter. Driving this car with the top down and listening to that awesome roar from the carbureted six-cylinder is automotive bliss. It doesn't really have much horsepower, but the car is just set up so well that it is always fun. I really dig this car and the cockpit view is amazing with that classic wood grain!

50 Days of (Green) Hell Guest Drive 42 - Range Rover Supercharged

Dead Poul continues this British Day with the Supercharged Range Rover. This is definitely worth the watch, if only to see the best ending in the series!
