As far as the endless GT/Forza comparisons, it's inevitable, perhaps even necessary, as they largely occupy the same console sim market.
There's something to be said for both franchises.
It's safe to say that there wouldn't even be a Forza series were it not for GT carving out a unique niche for console racing enthusiasts and consistently maintaining a high standard of excellence. The developers at Turn 10 have always said as much, and as others have pointed out, they have taken the basic GT concept and expanded it to new areas like damage modeling, livery editing, exhaustive customization and extensive community support.
GT can still lay claim to the most meticulous, precisely rendered car models in the business, top-notch production values, unmatched breadth of content, and a wider range of motorsport representation than any of its rivals. Polyphony Digital has also been at it for a long time, and thus enjoys the luxury of brand recognition, consumer and manufacturer support, and financial backing that Turn 10 can't quite match-- yet.
Still, I think we can all appreciate how far the Forza franchise has come in just 4 years. Who knows how much further the series will have progressed by the time it's on the 4th or 5th iteration? Neither franchise would be where it is today were it not for pressure from the competition.
As far as the incessant bickering between the fans of both series go, it's fucking tiresome and aggravating, but also unlikely to go away anytime soon-- nor should it necessarily. I guess it's like rivalries between sports franchises.
All I'd wish to see is a more reasoned, sensible discourse without the trolling and name-calling, but I've been playing videogames long enough to know that it perhaps might be a bit much to wish for.
