Forza Motorsport 3 - October 2009 release (ignore the OP at your peril)

And I thought the G25 was expensive as fuck....!
I was surprised at how cheap the G25 seems to be selling for... but sadly as MS / Logitech wont play nice it's not an option for me anyway.

On the Fanatec issue... I might need to give it some thought. I suppose if I really don't like the standard pedals I could always buy the clubsport pedals separately later. Would cost me more, but it's not like the pedals are going anywhere (unlike the wheel).

i've used the standard 911 turbo wheel with the stock pedals and the belt drive wheel, the wheel is super smooth, way smoother than the g25 but no stronger imo and the stock pedals were a step back from the g25 and a huge step back if the brake mod is taken into consideration

for over double the price i wouldn't even consider getting it but then i've been perfectly happy with a g25 for 2 years now

As far as the endless GT/Forza comparisons, it's inevitable, perhaps even necessary, as they largely occupy the same console sim market.

I wonder if it would be the same if both were cross platform. Alot of the time i get the feeling its just a platform war by proxy.

These Forza/GT comparisons are stupid, but I wanted to jump in and tell all of you newcomers that the Forza 2 GAF community and official threads were absolutely the best. I had a ton of fun playing with a lot of guys and there are so many awesome people who were extremely generous with their advice and car designs. There were also a ton of great videos. And the best thing was that the people who were actually playing F2 didn't say a word about GT, so there were no dumb wars.

I hope that GAF behaves as well with Forza 3. I look forward to driving with many of you this October.

Carry on.

the best thing about the rewind "debate" is that if GT copies it and introduces a rewind feature, it will suddenly become "innovative" and "awesome"

I doubt that very much. In any case, it's not even innovative in Forza 3. GRID had a similar system in place. made for very easy races lol. And as much as I told myself I wouldn't use it, I continuously did! :p

Right, but the point is you didn't HAVE to use it. Also, with F3, unlike what I believe many GT fanboys are telling themselves, you won't have a legitimate time. What I mean is your time will not be official if you use the rewind. Why should I care if you use it? Your time can NEVER be better than mine if you do because it won't be official. Who's being cheated? The GT fanboys need to calm it down over a freaking option. Someone forgot to tell them having an AI driver race your races isn't exactly kosher either, but that is also just an OPTION.

It's a feature that can bring more people into the sim racing genre by being a little more forgiving and allowing them to work their way up to the more difficult. It's like people pretend no one plays games on easy and works their way to the harder difficulty levels if they like it and are up for a bigger challenge. What the hell do you guys think casuals do?

Beyond that, what about all the fun things rewind can do? What if I'm just looking to screw around and I try taking a particular turn doing something crazy? Over and over I can try with rewind. What if I'm trying to smoke that bastard in the car in front just for fun? I get him once, but I think, man that could have been so much cooler, let me just rewind and...BAM!

WHO DEY!?
Even the developers are getting in on the act:

Forza Motorsport 3 game director Dan Greenwalt is proud of his game. More specifically, he believes that Forza 3 has surpassed all of the competition, most notably Gran Turismo. When asked how Forza is positioned against other racing stalwarts like Need for Speed and Gran Turismo, Greenwalt did not mince words.

"I'm in this industry because of Gran Turismo, let's just be frank," said Greenwalt. He then explained that Gran Turismo inspired his first "stressful" car purchase, a Mitsubishi 3000GT, saying that is was "a great car in that game, and I thought 'Oh my God, if I'm ever going to have a car, that's the car that I want.'" Then things got ugly.

"So, props to Kazunori Yamauchi-san and the PS1 team," said Greenwalt. "That said," he continued, "I feel that he's passed us the baton. Perhaps he hasn't meant to, but we have taken the genre to new levels and they've stopped evolving the genre. So again, tremendous respect to him, but I'd say the differentiator is they're old school." He conclued, "The emperor's naked, and I don't want to, you know, I don't want to slap him around, but no game competes [with] us right now."

A bold claim to make, especially considering that neither Forza 3 nor Gran Turismo 5 have actually released yet. Whenever they do, we're hoping for a good rumble, Sharks vs Jets style.

From Joystick, but no source mentioned that I see.

http://www.*******.com/2009/06/05/turn-10-on-forza-3-no-game-competes-with-us/

And the other side:

Do you pay much attention to competition?

Not really, but we know we're monitored by everyone else.

There wouldn't be a Forza if it weren't for Gran Turismo.

At first, we're making sort of a unique game, and then all of a sudden there's all these guys making a similar game. It was actually a surprise to us. For us, it's really an honor that people are trying to do what we do.

Coming from the stiq of joy, and no source, leads me to think it is likely fabricated... that or it was an out of context quote taken while drinking at an E3 party. :D

It just seems like the Forza guys are getting arrogant for no reason, honestly it makes them and the game look bad. Yeah the game looks and plays great, but bolstering about it like a fool isn't helping anything. I think they need to tone it down a notch.

I think its equally ridiculous that Yamauchi and his team says they never look at the competition.

Back up a second. Exactly what GT game that's out compares favorably to Forza 2?

The Forza guys have reason to be confident, even if circumstances (no GT in many, many years) might lead them to a little overconfidence.

Though I agree with their assessment.

GT5's not even out. And even then, you don't go around acting like 12 year old fanboys when you're professional developers. Kind of takes away from the value of their efforts. It's just not the done thing, irrespective of the game or genre.

I think Team 10 need to ease off a little. They are making themselves look immature. Quietly confident is so much better than over the top smack talk and constant gloating. Especially when the main competitor product isn't even out.

Well if the following quote is real, than yes you are popular and I was asking about you.
Ah yes, the same Che that said there was no way GT5 would be able to display more than 2 cars on screen with the same model quality of GTHD. The same Che that also said that there was no way PD would implement fully-rendered car interiors. That guy? Awesome.

So, I'm thinking about ordering a Fanatec Porsche 911 Turbo S Wheel US. I'm looking for a long-term high-quality wheel that's compatible with the XB360, PS3, and PC.

yet their team was scribbling notes at E3.

Honestly Turn10 can say whatever they like, it may or may not be true and even when the game comes out it'll be relative to who prefers which style of simulations.

I don't mind them being vocal because it just might get PD serious and working harder to get the game out faster. All I know is that competition is good and I'm probably going to end up buying both because I see two great racing games coming out within a year.

Physics, damage, collisions, editor, customization, online, sound, AI, features...
I WILL buy GT, but presentation and style aside i really don't see a lot of reasons to put GT above Forza at this point. Of course GT5 might change that.

I think its equally ridiculous that Yamauchi and his team says they never look at the competition.

Ridiculous, but explains a lot :)

I agree on both points.

But I can see why T10 would want to say that sort of stuff or get that point across.

Here's a few facts for consideration:

-most racing sim die-hards play on PC, nearly exclusively
-most console racing fans haven't really played proper sim games with proper setups
-there's no one in the gaming media circuit that is a die hard sim racer

With these in consideration GT being the only console sim racer out there for a long time has been considered the best console sim racing game. It has been more feature-packed than previous attempts by other companies. Sega GT anyone?

Fast forward to Summer 2007 when Forza 2 was released. It eclipsed GT4 as a sim and that's expected as it came out later on a more powerful console. It was the first console racer that could compare (though not beat out) PC sim racers. GT:HD came out and then so did GT5:p and they didn't prove themselves to be better than FM2. They were very comparable and considered about the same but they were just tastes of the GT5 experience. Though it's not fair to compare Prologue to FM2, FM2 still wins out because it's a full game with all the features you expect. A person can say that FM2 is the best console sim experience and they'd be right...but again you're comparing it to demos, basically. So the media didn't label FM2 as king and were waiting for GT5 to come out to make a proper comparison and that makes sense.

So Turn10 can't really call their game the best sim racer out there, because they're consistently being compared to a product that doesn't exist yet, and hasn't existed for years after being first shown. And that's not Turn10's fault. Maybe they feel they should get the credit they deserve. People aren't judging GT on its actual merits, but on promises that have yet to come to fruition.

And now they come up with FM3 a game that sounds like it can compare with games like RFactor as both games have a heavy focus on modelling the most realistic tire physics. That it can compare to PC racers in terms of physics. A game that looks better than PC racers (FM2 didn't look better) to boot. So maybe it's time the game/series got some credit.

Is there currently any other console racer that can compete with FM2? No. So should we wait for the competition, or give due where it's due?

I do agree about the "slap around" comment though, it's a bit far and comments like that are unfair because GT5 hasn't come out. You can say that you've delivered and they haven't sure. But you can't say you beat them when their title is coming out so soon and we don't know much about it. You can say your series is the best out now. Yeah. But to say it's the best out for this generation...you can't say that.

But I do agree with Greenwalt, the GT series has stagnated. Many of my friends who I used to race with over FireWire "LAN" parties in Gran Turismo 3 never made the jump to GT4. There wasn't enough of an upgrade for them to warrant buying it. GT5 features better physics so many of us got Prologue (never had a LAN party yet though, we were hoping for decent online play...yeah right) but we don't have that same buzz we had with GT3 that was a big jump. Anyways my point is there were so many ways they could have grown the franchise and they didn't. Forza on the other hand added better collisions where you don't bounce off each other to help take corners, cosmetic damage, parts damage, tire manufacturers, tire pressure/heat, realtime telemetry, etc.. Feature-wise it's what next gen GT should have been.

But yeah, I agree that we keep the zaniness of the GT5 thread away from this one. I'd like to keep an eye on it because the Nascar and WRC licenses are draws for me...but most of the talk will be on Forza on that thread. They talked for pages on the "Rewind" feature before I even pointed out how dumb it was to critique that option and then on the number of cars in Forza (I'm sure if I brought up the number of available tires you could put on the car in each game they'd make the same argument they are arguing against).

Right now I'm focus on getting a racing setup for BOTH games, and so I hope no one minds me talking about racing wheels compatible with both consoles, as well as racing seats, in this thread. I want to keep it in this thread rather than another one because my biggest goal is getting a 900 degree racing wheel for the 360, that is hopefully multiplat compatible (if not I already have a wheel for the PS3).

If Dan is feeling that Forza isn't getting enough credit...that wheel issue is one problem right there. 900 degree racing wheels have been standard since the PS2 days. It's a major part of the experience and sometimes it doesn't matter how many features you have when your weakest link is the fact that you either play it on a controller or on a crappy wheel (never mind the 270 degree movement the wheel itself was a ripoff). In some ways it's like having a 300+ HP car with tires bought from Walmart. Turn10 did their part but MS totally mishandled the wheel issue.

I thought the new Fanatec one is both 900 degrees AND PC/360/pS3 compatible.

Granted the shifter is awkward so I have no idea how it'll mount to any racing seats I can find whether it'd be a playseat (lol lame), Obutto, Frex, or something similar. It's just has to be so damn close to the wheel because the wire is short.

Sadly I can think that's as legit of a setup as you can get. I am pretty sure FREX wheels aren't compatible with 360 and those are a grip.

The wheel is key I agree.

If turn 10 wants to get arrogant about the game as a sim that is fine but then I am going to get picky about the wheel.

You cannot take a sim seriously without it.

Before turn 10 wrote a line of code for this game they should have been camping at logitech's door to work something out with the g25.

Fanatec or not, no G25 support or a version of the G25 for the 360 is something that is always going the haunt them.

The time they spent getting manufactures to agree on roll overs they should have been on the phone with Logitech and Microsoft about the wheel.

Still looking forward to the game no doubt!

I'm doing it... aside from the price, the only real worry is that Logitech and MS kiss and make up, releasing a G27 or something when the game comes out.

I haven't found such a problem with that opinion on this side of the fence (I'm the same, really hyped for both)... but a fair few of the GT fanboys will look at you like you've grown a third head.

Of course, they'd argue that the reason there's no so much of a problem with liking GT5 in this thread is that Forza fans have accepted GT is a much better game.

Wow, looking at those prices I sure hope MS and Fanatec work something out before F3 is released. I so wish it wasn't a licensed Porsche product. Could be $100 cheaper without it. It's almost a slap in the face. Cool, here is your ultimate racing sim for the Xbox 360, oh if you want the full experience you need to buy a $350 wheel with a Porsche badge on it. I might convince myself it's worth it because I can use it for F3 and GT5. But if I only had a Xbox, no way.
