Forza Motorsport 6 |OT| Forza turns 10

You know, what, you're probably right, I am probably just not the demographic T10 are shooting for.

Well, me neither. I personally liked the career mode of the first TOCA Race Driver games. Coming up from the lower classes to the higher end DTM cars over several seasons.

But then how would you implement something like that in Forza? A lot of people want their small every day cars, that's why Forza has at least 70% street cars (at least it feels like that).

I'd rather have a motorsport (hey that's in the games name!) focused game with a proper career than what we have now. But I can see that the majority of buyers rather have 500+ cars with at least 50 different Skylines than that...

This same criticism came up in the last thread, and it's simply not fair.

Maybe the Forza series just isn't for you, but "motorsport" is a broad term. You're basicaly saying my definition of motorsport is right, and T10 isn't living up to it.

it's hard to please everyone. Forza doesn't try to be a game simulating real motorsports series, it's just a collection of cars and tracks.

even pcars, which is a more niche minded motorsport focused game rather than what Forza is, couldn't nail the motorsports aspects. The regulations are shit, important data is hidden or confusing, and stuff like debris stays on the track in the racing line the entire race. Pit stops are clunky to set up and cars also ghost in pits destroying gaps earned on the track.

Don't get me wrong. I really like Forza and I can understand why it is, what it is. But also career is often really sterile, especially in lower classes. And I think that's because what Forza is: jack of all trades.

You can't, which is apparent in many games, there is a juxtaposition between the bare bones of a Forza (and GT) game, which is taking a normal road car and tuning it (poke-car-tuner), and the bare bones of a "proper" motorsport game, and each are quite polarizing in who they appeal too, although I am sure there is a crossover point, I would say that crossover point probably isn't as lucrative as the poke-car-tuner pool.

I might have a go at drawing up a racing game career design doc, might even look at how a narrative would fit in as well..........

The thing is, FM6 is soooo close.

It really wouldn't have taken much to offer a more authentic racing experience as an option.

All the ingredients are there, just need Mary Berry (Dan G) to work her (his) magic and make a decent cake out of it, it's got a bit of a soggy bottom at the moment..........

There should be a championship for each series and I also believe they need to introduce some form of story to keep interest for when racing grid after grid just becomes a grind.

Introduce some element of protagonist and antagonist along with a overall Championship to give us more to work toward other than XP and affinity level. A few FMV wouldn't hurt either.

It's a similar complaint I have in FH2. I prefer the points reward system there but after awhile the game just becomes another series of races and it becomes tedious. At least with the Storm Island DLC there was a overall Championship that was being worked towards. That was more engrossing than the rest of the game and kept me motivated to keep coming back.

I'm not sure about the story (Grid 2 did that and was awkward because of it), but the idea of rivals is a good idea, like something in Shift 2 where the expert introduces the car class specialism and then you have to beat them to be see as competent.

It worked as you always had someone/something to aim for and there was a tangible sense of victory when you blasted by your opponent in the dark at Road America.

Unfortunately, I just felt the career mode of Pcars was so unstructured that it was self-defeting (not to mention the poor quality of the game on the XBONE).

Looking forwards to playing Forza 6 though, demo was amaze. I played 3 and felt it was a bit sterile, but I hope they've done a bit of learning off Playground Games in the interim.

"playing" dumb? unpossible
Didn't even realise that the Ultimate edition allowed to play the game early. Was just cleaning up my hard drive, when I notice Forza 6 is available under Ready to be Installed. Figured it was some sort of preload; nope, I could have downloaded it on the 10th :(

A simple points-based championship is so obvious it's painful. Someone at Turn 10 could have rattled the necessary code off during their lunch hour.

While I like the idea of Drivatars, I think anyone here that has played the Forza series since the beginning remembers M. Rossi. Why? cause there was a personality to the name. You may not have liked him but you remember racing against him and was always motivated to beat him. He made a good rival.

Forza needs more M. Rossi's. At least the idea of him. That, and a points system would go a long way IMO.

Man, you'd think that the Ultimate edition buyers would know how to race. But one online session in the A-class hopper disproved that. It's like it's these people's first time playing a racing sim.

Why did you pay $100 for a game in a genre you clearly don't like? (Since you don't seem to care about learning how to play!)

Shit, I had no idea you guys were racing on Friday. Need to pay more attention.

Is that what frontieruk meant? I read it as zorbs gets the game on Friday.

Friday would be cool with me though. Better than Sunday. It's football season.

Had a lot of fun beating SCR0NE's time on the VIP GT350R rival challenge :D

Looks like you've got your work cut out for you. Only person I've beaten is p3tran, and from the looks of his ghost, I'm pretty sure he was racing drunk. :p

Yup, you were right. I am an idiot. Long weekend. lol

I think I'll get the game before Friday. But not sure when exactly. I'll be down for racing on Friday though if I have it then.

Quick question, is the VIP worth it? What cars do you get with it, if any? and it's still a XP/Money doubler right?

I like the cars but I'm not sure what the price of the VIP pass standalone is.

Some thoughts after sinking around 10 hours into FM6 this weekend:

It's better than Forza 5 but still feels.... weirdly unfinished. Not as unfinished as FM5, but the career progression still just feels lifeless to me compared to the earlier FM games. The series don't even seem to have leaderboards or championship winners anymore in career mode. "Why am I even doing this?" I felt myself asking already, but then I realized, I'm doing this because the driving really does feel great. 1080p 60fps with 24 cars on the track. Complete package-wise, It's still not the successor to FM4 that I've been waiting for, which is frustrating, but it is the best racing sim (to me) to come out in several years, so I guess that's enough for me. At least for now.

After they got torn apart last time, and with how well I feel like they handled the progression in Horizon 2 (different team, but still) I really was ready for them to knock it out of the park with this game and I'm just a tad disappointed. Either way, it doesn't feel like a microtransaction/credit grind like FM5 was at launch, which is an improvement. Night racing and weather effects (finally) are an improvement. Not sure why the mods exist. They seem like something that would have been a microtransaction initially but they decided to just keep it in. Maybe they are testing the waters with them to charge for them in future games. I don't think they belong in a game like this, though. I also don't know why they have left car clubs and the auction house out. I spent so much time customizing cars and selling designs in the old games but I do not like how they handle this in FM5 and 6 at all. I'm not sure why they're going out of their way to hide the community aspects of this game, which kept me coming back to the old games for months and years after release. I never felt that pull with 5 and I'm afraid that it's not going to happen with 6, either, already even after just a weekend of play.

I'm going to keep playing this and will likely play through the entire progression of the career, I just wish there were more stakes or the game felt more lively in any way. I basically want FM3/4 with updated physics and better graphics and stuff. I don't know how they've missed the mark on delivering that twice in a row now, but it's clear that they have a different vision for the franchise than what the fans want, which I feel is pretty frustrating.

I don't want to sound too down on it, because the core gameplay is still fun, and this game is an improvement from the last in almost every way, just, I guess I wish it wasn't so aimless.

Nice summary.

The physics engine and showcase events keep me coming back to the game. While it's much better than Forza 5 (not difficult) I can't help but feel this could have been so much more with a few extra options/event types. And that's what's so frustrating about it... The things fans are asking for really aren't that much, and we know they are not impossible considering they have done them before.

Perhaps in Forza 7 (I expect the 3rd game to be lights out on features) we'll get, "Forza Career" (current career type), "Motorsport Career" (more hardcore points based career with qualifying and no street cars), Showcases, etc.

The foundation is more than there. 6 is great, and I only see 7 eclipsing it further.

They could even do one of their awesome intros with you picking which career you want to start with as part of the introduction.

So how does the career work in FM6 (I haven't played FM5)? The game chooses events for you, you choose them yourself or are they based on the car you've picked?? I assume there's no grid from FM4? :(

But let's say FM4 had FM6 graphics and the newest cars, but not FM6's physics, controls and tracks, would you prefer the updated FM4 over FM6?
I've never played 4, my Xbox died before it released and I didn't replace it, because I had just bought a second PS3, but I can't imagine trading FM6's physics back. I'd even take a GT6 with old graphics but FM6's physics and FFB-feel over a GT6 with Driveclub-graphics at 60fps, but old GT-handling.

I'm going to keep playing this and will likely play through the entire progression of the career, I just wish there were more stakes or the game felt more lively in any way.
Yea, many here said that over last few days. I think Turn10 knows that the normal career feels grindy compared to their showcase events, but just Showcases can't be the way to go either. They will figure this out. Personally I'd buy the game even if it were just Forzatech, cars, tracks and a Rivalsmode, but they really have to brainstorm about their normal career for the next games or even DLC.

As I've said before, at the minimum they could offer a big grid of events like they did in 3 and 4. That provided loads of interesting races each geared to a car model, class or type - or a race type such as endurance.

The showcases in FM6 are essentially what the event grid was - but instead of offering us a whole season of races for each one, we just get one race. Which is silly. As others have said some of these showcases really are brilliant and it would make lots of sense to let us do any of them again on any track.

You can customize your driver now? Finally!
Now if only they could add this feature to Horizon. I'm tired of that default smug asshole ruining all the FH2 screenshots.

My ideal racing game is basically the outer shell of FM4 UI/feature-set with the actual racing (new cars, graphics, physics, weather, etc.) of FM6.

Thanks guys I'm getting VIP. I will do what I did with Forza 5 and wait for the car pass to go on sale, although $30 Canadian sounds like a good price. 450 will have to be enough cars for now :)

Wait, so do they not have championships or anything in the career? Or a points system if you go through a series of races?
