Yeah! The world would be so much better off if there were no one to respond to 911 calls, no organization that investigates murders, fraud, child pornography, rape, assault, human smuggling, drug deal--oh wait, this is GAF, nevermind.

So much better if there were no organization tasked with arresting drunk drivers, responding to domestic disturbances and assaults, of stopping riots, of responding to gun calls, dealing with the mentally ill who go off on rampages...
Especially in Detroit. Not like that stuff ever happens up there, anyways...

Blind hatred for the police is one of the most ignorant things I've ever seen. Especially when the person is presumably making that statement ensconced in the very veil of protection that the various elements of the executive branch afford them.

I'm kind of confused as to how the officer that was shooting at the guy managed to get shot in the back.
I thought about that too, I'm guessing he tried to shield the downed sargeant with his body while reaching for her gun, got shot in the back then turned around and shot at the guy and missed.

What a great way to end the day.

An update to a sad story now gives it a positive twist as the officers are doing well.

And to top it off, the troll of the thread got banned.

Cheers everyone.

Edit: Although that last bit about the burglary wasn't nice to hear. :/

Yeah, about that, it's a really sad story. Officer Larry Nehasil

The gun the suspect killed him with was stolen from the residence he had broken into minutes earlier

Livonia Police Officer Larry Nehasil died Monday evening in Walled Lake, the victim of a fatal gunshot wound fired by a burglary suspect who had stolen the pistol moments earlier, according to Mayor Jack Kirksey.

For a city that prides itself as one of the safest in the nation, Nehasil's death -- the first felonious officer fatality in the police department's history -- came as a shock to friends, peers and the community.

"I can't begin to describe the deep grief that (fellow officers) are experiencing," Kirksey told host Paul W. Smith this morning on WJR-AM 760, describing Nehasil as a personal friend.

"Police units typically are very close, and their camaraderie goes beyond imagination. And when they lose one..." he said, trailing off as he broke up.

Nehasil and a small group of fellow undercover officers were tracking two men and a woman tied to a number of home break-ins in Livonia and the surrounding region, Kirksey said. The officers learned the suspects had been evicted from their residence in Detroit and had set up shop in Walled Lake, where they attempted to rob a home across the street while under investigation.

Kirksey said Nehasil, clearly marked as an officer, followed one of the male suspects into the backyard as the other loaded stolen goods into a car parked in the driveway. It was there, in a small wooded area behind the house, authorities say the suspect opened fire with a pistol he had just stolen from inside the house.

"It sends shivers down your spine," Kirksey said. "There was an exchange of shots and Larry's fellow officers rushed around to the back of the home where they found Larry and the perpetrator dead. Larry had his vest on, but it was just the way he was hit."

Nehasil was a 20-year veteran of the force and previously worked for the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.

"My heart goes out to the family, friends and colleagues of this dedicated public servant," Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon said Monday night in an e-mail message. "He stood in the gap to protect others from harm and for that Officer Nehasil will always be remembered as a hero."

3 more officers shot in Florida http://www.cnn.com/2011/CRIME/01/24/florida.officers.shot/index.html?hpt=T2

10 officers shot in 24 hours, as well as 2 officers who were killed on Thursday in Miami.

Shit's pretty nasty out there.

My gf works about 4 blocks from there. She passes by that block on her way to and from work. Thankfully she starts at 7:00 so she was never in any danger. She says the police are all over the place and the guy has even threatened to shoot tv helicopters if they come near.

Wow thats fucking crazy... dude jumped the counter and everything. Can't believe none of the cops died there.

It's very hard to watch the surveillance footage.

Dammit, where's the lol emoticon when you need it?

The musings of the naive...

I don't think I've ever heard of metal detectors at entrances to police stations, dudes.
It's not naive, maybe just ignorant. I would guess that the main reason they don't have metal detectors it makes it harder to walk in and out if you have to check in your service pistol every time but apparently this police station has now put in metal detectors.

It might even be due to budget concerns as you'd need somebody full time to monitor the door.

Watched the video, holy fuck. Those guys behind that table/bench where incredibly lucky. Dunno if the dude was out of ammo, had a change of heart or because he was shot but yeah he could have killed one of them at close range for sure.

I normally avoid the whole people dying for real on video; but since this was suicide by cop and the officers survived I watched this. Holy crap what a mess. I'd love to know better what transpired, but it's kind of tough to tell in the video.

I can't believe that idiot dove over the counter. Ghetto Chow Yun Fat. </life> :|

No fucking way the police would simply tail theft suspects like that if they were black. They'd be stopped, searched, and arrested immediately. In no way am I suggesting the police officer brought this on himself, but having visited Livonia many times I know how things go down there.

You have absolutely no idea whether he was tailed because he was white, or if him being black would have made anything different. You don't know this cop, and can't make assumptions about him any more than you can about any other human being. Shove your assumptions right up your ass where you pulled them from.

How was he still walking after the officer shot him? Adrenaline?

People don't just drop like a sack of potatoes when they're shot by a handgun, like in the movies. There are countless lethal use of force situations where suspects are shot many times before they go down. The human body is a remarkably durable thing.

It's PD. He's just being a dick on purpose to get a rise out of people. No big thang.

edit: While on the topic of law enforcement shooting videos that are hard to watch, here's one that has popped up in recent months. Maybe I shouldn't share it, but eh, it's out there on youtube anyway. It's a training video for officers to beware of the far-right militia-type loonies. Unfortunately, the story in the video does not have a happy result like the Detroit shooting. Gives me chills every time I watch it. :(
