I don't but I get them anyway, if my vote somehow overruled all votes I guess things would be okay.

In my opinion you're just trolling at this point.

The people protesting didn't vote for them!
France voted for left wing regions earlier this year!
Democracy isn't voting once or twice and then calling it a day.

Oh and I'm not talking about the idiotic morons fighting against the health care reform that happened recently, because they didn't want to be socialists (as well as 80% not even understanding what they were fighting against)....like Canada. /facepalm

Life's not easy and it will never be. With all the poverty and disease in the world it cracks me up to see the French get so upset about trivial things like increasing the retirement age. People in the west should be thankful they even have programs for them when they reach their older years. You get upset about when you receive your retirement and a woman in Africa loses her baby to starvation. Gee, what's worse?

What an immature argument.

Don't fight for anything unjust or unfair because people in other countries have it worse.

That has nothing to do with anything. "People in the West" don't have to be thankful to have those programs, WE BUILT THEM. And now people fight to keep them. You don't even understand half of the reason people are protesting. It's not just "an extra two years" AT ALL. It has various implications. If anything, it's not of your business.

But hey if it helps you to sleep at night to imagine that people who are protesting are fools so you don't have to feel like a lazy citizen who won't do anything to fight for the social services he benefits from daily, so be it.

How about be grateful for what you have? Oh, and moving the retirement age to 62 is far from unjust. Your use of the word fair shows me your naivety. Life is not fair. The sooner you realize that the happier you'll be.

Did Sarkozy explicitly state during the run-up to his election that there will be cuts in social programs?

The Tories made it clear that there will be cuts in the public sector and people voted for it knowing the consequences. This happened within less than half a year, the electorate in Britain wanted deficit reduction. In France the last general election was not in the same time frame.

Yes, they do. Thank your lucky stars you were born in the west because if you were born in N Korea no one would give a shit about what you think is fair or unjust.

naive is you guys,
they will never announce unpopular measures during a campaign run (tax increase, cuts in social programs)

grow up!

governments will always do unpopular shit after election and if you don't like cuts in social programs, then don't vote for the Right, plain and simple

You have no idea what you are talking. Raising the age of retirement means, among other things, less work for young people, who are already having trouble finding work. The longer it takes for them to start working, the further away their retirement will be. 62 is NOT the age at which people will be retiring! It will be close to 70 easily!

You don't know anything, you're a self-hating jealous troll.

It's not moving the retirement age to 62,it's moving the number of years you have to contribute to 42 years.
That means that with studies and if you want full retirements rights, you'll be seventy when you stop working.

Do people think the west can just print money, borrow and spend with no consequences? Cuts will have to be made. There is no way around it. Shit, I wouldn't be surprised if the SS age gets raised to 75 here in the states. There is not enough money. There's no other way around it. The standard of living and programs that many spoiled citizens have become accustomed to will have to be decreased. The world is changing as it has for centuries. I love the people that feel they are entitled to a certain lifestyle.

So? The retirement age was instituted when human lived far shorter lives. Societies can't afford to subsidize the elderly for 30+ years. It's a formula for bankruptcy. All I see here are a bunch of whiners who can't grasp the reality of the financial situation we are now facing.

people don't make the laws, it's the legislature does and the President enacts on it and pulls the trigger.

Sakrozy won with a landslide.. not a disputable minority government or coalition

in Canada, it's a stalemate with 3 consecutive minority governments where it's dead locked in the voting booth.. yeah that shit does not fly as a free pass

but hey, when it's majority government; that's because THE MAJORITY of the country chose them, so deal with it!

Actually with life expectancy increasing and essentially old people not dying fast enough the only way countries can afford to look after old people is if the retirement age is even higher then that, idiot protesters causing even more damage to the economy and using it as a excuse to skive off school are simply making the knock on problem even worse.

If french people cant accept that retirement age HAS to increase then the only alternative is to bring in a policy of a age limit, hit 75? happy birthday now its off to the chopping block with you.

welcome to the modern world france.

Yeah, ok. It's the bankers fault. Well said. Just ignore the realities of rising costs and a rising elderly population. Fuck those bankers!

You don't have to study if you don't want to. If what you want is an early retirement, you should have started working at 18. Life is made of choices, and each choice has a cost. And most people decide to study because it gets them a better working life afterwards, so they have no reason to complain.

The main problem is not that people live longer but that people are jobless.
Even with this reform, people will get fired at 50.

They should've cut free university tuition instead. It just results in a lot of idiots and slackers getting into university and not caring because it doesn't cost them anything. Also, it results in those awful freeloaders like those italian immigrants who got free tuition in the UK and squatting other people's houses to avoid paying rent.

I love how you think people are getting screwed over. Your sense of entitlement is astounding. I can tell you from this American's point of view it sure seems like many French have a problem with work. You already get three times as much time off and seem to complain more. You wonder why you garner hardly any sympathy from your neighbors across the pond.

Please this is a stupid argument.
So according to you we should agree on everything that is made by the government because of one vote that happened 3 years ago?
btw ever since the regional elections France is entirely (except for Alsace) Socialist.
The left is more legitimate than the right democratically speaking right now.

Uhm.. regional elections have always tended to be more left-wing.

In 2007, anyone with a bit of intelligence knew he was scum, but then again they also knew Royal was worse. If I had to choose again, I choose him over her once more. 2007 was a shitty election choice-wise, but it seems that's how they are every time, I've a feeling 2012 will be the same.

The PS is a horrible party, so we don't have much choice. They only candidate I can see them bringing out which would not make me vote UMP by default would be DSK, and then I'd have to think more about it. Other than him I'm 99% sure I'll vote UMP in 2012.

If they get three times as much time off, how is that a problem? The country can handle it. Meanwhile, the US economy is total shit with an unbelievable deficit, and yet you can barely have two weeks of vacations a year, so at least in France the deficits are related to having a good standard of living, while in your case they exist to destroy it and fill the pockets of lobbyist and corporations. And Germans have even more vacations than the French.

You've got no lessons to teach anyone, except jealous and bitternessy and self-hate.

This was certainly not the case in 1998, even less so in 1992. They tend to vote against whoever is in power.

He led a better campaign - especially towards the finish. I doubt many people would agree that 'Royal is worse' today. I say this and I despise her.

1992 was different yes, but 1998 was not for the left was 2010 was for the right.

Maybe less people would agree today, but still quite a good deal. Royal just has no fucking clue of what to do. Sarkozy may be a complete asshole, but at least his politics on the whole aren't nightmarish, it's just his way of doing things which are utter crap.

That's a strong argument there. Obviously they need to make cuts because the system is not working. The USA will be traveling down this road soon enough too. You can't make a perfect society where everyone has top notch health care, months off, and a comfortable life as a senior all on the Govt's dime. I know you feel life is unfair and unjust and guess what? You're right. Unfortunately it has always been that way and always will. As I said earlier, try and appreciate what you have even with your perceived shortcomings. Go talk to some seniors about the life their parents lived for some perspective.

How old are you? You do realize that most of those gains in life expectancy are due to lower child mortality rates right?

I mean do you actually know older folks who worked physical jobs? My father is 62 and is taking early Social Security this year. The mans body is literally broken, the past 5 years he had 3 hernia operations due to the lifting. When I was growing up he was 6ft, now he is close to my height at 5'7'', just all hunched over with a fucked up back. Guy can't even lay down and sleep in a bed anymore.

Seriously things go down hill in your 50s and crater in your 60s, a year then is not the same as a year in your 20s or 30s.

How about we take a bit of the bloated fucking military budget in addition to two stupid wars and use that or raise taxes back to *gasp* Nixon levels..
