I'm in engineering, so far one teacher went on strike once (the philosophy teacher :lol), but only once because otherwise those who had taken philosophy this semester would have been late. Yay for smart and non-lazy teachers and students :D

You know, it's nonsense to equate political activism and civic responsibility with laziness. I'd say the opposite, in fact. Keep keepin' your head down, MagniHarvald. I'm sure it'll turn out well for you, if not for your society. At least you aren't "lazy," right?

I got grudge sucked!
I'm surprised I can still read what some of the signs say more or less word for word. Haven't taken french in almost 10 years. Yay for knowledge retention

No, you wouldn't be that crude.

Besides, maybe MagniHarvald's hoodie is in the wash.

HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?! <3

More pictures
http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2010/10/france_on_strike.html

Those kind of pictures will be almost "self-censored" from the mainstream US media, especially on TV. They don't have the balls to show that the people in other countries, especially not Europeans, especially not France, have the balls to protest and face their governments!

"They are idiots who are complaining for a mere two years more of work, or they don't even know what they are protesting they just want to miss school!!
at least I hope so cause otherwise it makes me feel like a lazy ass who spends his time ranting rather than doing anything... I want to sleep soundly tonight knowing they're not smarter than me... The girls are too hot to be smart as well!

You would be surprised to discover that for a fair portion of French students, political activity and laziness are not mutually exclusive! When "civic responsibility" consists in blocking entrances with chairs and waiting it out in, as aforementioned, off-the-street furniture - and when the fear of reprisal is minimum, since there is such a thing as bad publicity for deans who decide to break the blockades early on...

Well... Let's put it simply. (And bear in mind I'm only talking about the universities; I mostly disagree with MagniHarvald on other issues.)

When protests of this magnitude happen nearly every year, when you hear the exact same rhetoric being spewed, the exact same slogans sprayed on the uni's billboards, your sympathy wears thin. First tragedy, then farce... ad nauseam.

Just received a call from my cousin in Marseilles to protest for a few days. I had already decided to turn her down if she asked, so I did. I agree with their point of view, but this definitely isn't a place for an American to show his face. Hopefully it's ends soon though since it's been almost six months since I paid her and my aunt a visit.

Students have been blocking any form of progress for well over a decade, and so it keeps getting worse. If this doesn't pass, then in five years, ten years, the measures taken will have to be even more drastic.

Not to say that the OVERWHELMING majority of students participating in illegal blocuses are doing so for fun, they don't really care. For the lycéens (high school), striking is illegal and like with the étudiants (uni), blocking (illegal for everyone) is stopping other students from accomplishing their studies.

And then they wonder why they aren't getting any jobs? There's a reason "les facs" (apart from medicine and law) have such a horrible reputation among HR in France.. There are no problems at the Grandes Écoles, at least when you're enrolled in a Grande École, you get your studies done, and then you get a job.

You call that shit progress now? Well, I, for one, am glad the students are blocking all this "progress". And you don't have to repeat the same bullshit fearmongering the rightwingers use every time they want to screw the workers. Yeah, we get it, France is doomed, dead, buried if Sarkozy doesn't put nearly senile grandpas to work.

Here's the problem: government costs are greater than government revenues. It doesn't look like the costs are going to drop without intervention, nor does it look like the revenues will increase enough without intervention.

It's easy to say 'no'. It's harder to present an alternative. What's your solution?

Government cots will always be greater than revenues in this kind of debt society. The system relies on that, if you want to change that change the whole system. And in the end if they want to cut they should cut the enormous defense budget and raise the taxes for the rich not screw the middle class.

These, fortified_concept, are what we call racailles. They don't need a reason to fuck shit up, they do it for fun. They never do it by themselves, and they never do it to some-one/thing that can defend his/her/it-self, because racailles, by definition, have no balls.

They're fuckheads, we agree on that. At least our anarchists have specific targets. Hell, they burned down by mistake a "mom and pop" shop a couple of years ago because it was near a bank and they raised money to restore it. These pathetic shits on the other hand are obviously doing it for fun and they hurt the movement. They can go fuck themselves.

Did they raise money to restore the bank? :lol

Hortefeux was talking about not letting these guys go unpunished a few pages back.

The english articles probably fucked up then because in the context of their translation it was implied that he was talking about people in the blockades. I despise these punks even more than the average guy does because they give protests a bad reputation. They're so fucking stupid that they don't even realize they're sabotaging themselves.

I'm all for taxes as a balanced way to contribute to society depending on your wealth... but why should the rich pay specifically for the aging population ?
All workers live longer, so it seems fair and logical to apply new working rules to everybody, not only those who can give more money.

They dont't give a shit about the demonstrations and any message linked to it. They're the same people who burn cars at each new year's eve. What's the message there ? "say no to earth orbiting the sun !" ?

They're not even part of the protest, they don't give a fuck and probably don't even understand what it's about.
For them big group of people = easy way to stir shit up and to get away with it.
I guess since their lives suck so much, it makes them feel empowered for a little bit.

Because the rich can afford it. Also because the rich have been absorbing are gains from productivity the last few decades instead of the middle class thus widening the gap between classes. These gains could have gone to the middle class that actually worked to create the wealth and subsequently to the pension system. It's time for the middle class to take back what is being stolen from them all these years.

So you just want to "make them pay", whatever the reason. Sounds more like retaliation than looking for a solution to a given problem.

It doesn't matter. Any civilized society shouldn't have this kind of enormous inequalities. Old tired citizens shouldn't be forced to work until 67 when a bunch of super-rich individuals can afford helping the society that made them rich.

This means French deputies have unanimously refused to align their retirement plan to the general retirement plan.

This applies to deputies and government officials: they have their own specific retirement plan and they unanimously voted to reject an amendment that would make them fall under the same plan that applies to the rest of the French people.

Scums

They aren't scum, they're just working for their own interest. Nothing strange there.

Man protesters always be taking shit too far. Then it smears their cause more than anything they've done up to now has helped.

In general, protests are usually used as an excuse to riot. Most people that riot don't really care about the goal of the protest themselves. Dissatisfaction and anger are the key suppliers of violence. Protests are the perfect excuse to gather up the critical mass and to engage elements of law enforcement, under disguise of lawful protesting. If there are enough violent protesters or if the anti-demonstration forces are too strong, havoc brakes lose. The strength of the rioting doesn't really show the power of the demonstrating party. It's more like a deep inside view of the accumulated dissatisfaction in the community.

not really, the people just have to vote correctly during Presidential elections and legislative elections

they voted for a Right Wing government, they should not act surprised that Right Wing cuts in social programs happen

democracy... if they did not want Social Program cuts, then they should have vote for Ségolène Royal when they had the chance

they only have themselves to blame

It's not "protesters". You're talking like all of them are turning over cars. The ones flipping cars are the same ones that burn 400 cars a day in France during the rest of the year.

So yeah, the actual protesters are doing quite fine. The ones breaking shit are a minority.

You are soooo right, amirite? People should shut up until the next election, especially those that DIDN'T VOTE FOR SARKOZY. "Serves them right for electing Sarkozy". The majority of France... DID NOT VOTE FOR HIM!

they only have themselves to blame, they voted for Sarkozy, they voted for the Right Wing party

dealwithit.gif

if they don't like right wing polices then they shouldn't have voted for Sarko in the first place

Quite like how half of the United States had themselves to blame when Bush was elected (even if they didn't vote for him)?

What an awful argument.

Please this is a stupid argument.
So according to you we should agree on everything that is made by the government because of one vote that happened 3 years ago?
btw ever since the regional elections France is entirely (except for Alsace) Socialist.
The left is more legitimate than the right democratically speaking right now.

This so incredibly naive.

Did you ever stop to think the people rioting are the ones who didn't vote for the right wingers but got stuck with them anyway?

Welcome to politics where majority rules and can fuck you over.

what the hell do you expect out of a Right Wing government? what the hell is wrong with you guys?

the Brits now elected the Tories, now the Brits must not get surprised if they get social programs cuts too

its the way the cookie crumbles...

if you don't like Right Wing policies, then don't vote for them!

Maybe if Americans decided to...you know fight for certain rights, instead of accepting bullshit policies you guys would have it easier off as well.

Oh and I'm not talking about the idiotic morons fighting against the health care reform that happened recently, because they didn't want to be socialists (as well as 80% not even understanding what they were fighting against)....like Canada. /facepalm
