Yo, don't make me want this.

I don't know why people are so much against a reboot. They could tackle social issues just like the original did. Racism, gun violence, police brutality, etc.

Will Smith was a shit actor for most of the show, too. In fact, Jaden has about 8 billion percent more acting under his belt than Big Willie did at their respective ages.

I'm not saying, I'm just saying.

Apparently no one can come up with original content anymore. Anything that has remotely worked in the 90s is getting dug up from the grave.

I really liked someone's suggestion earlier of twisting the premise by having some posh Carlton like figure from Bel Air being exiled to Philadelphia where he would have to adjust to living in the real world and dealing with all the social issues and racism that would come with it. Could be really fun, giving a more ironic spin on the title.

Premise; Sort of like Naruto. The Author of Naruto was smart enough not to tell the same story all over with Narutos son.

Naruto grows up, struggling, hated, discriminated against, talentless and the entire thing is him overcoming it and controlling his power. Pretty basic. It ends with him achieving his dream and being the strongest ninja of all time. Okay, that is good.

Then the son- The son is now the strongest ninjas son, and so his struggle is different. He is super talented, sorta arrogant, privileged, things come easy for him and he is prone to cheating. His thing is entirely different, and so the new story can take a different direction.

Do that with Jaden. Start him out as a shithead who killed someone in a drunk driving accident and had to move with his uncle because everyone hated him. Because why not start there?
Privileged little shit, make amends, weird and nonsensical- How does this kid become a decent human being, and where in the story would you feel sorry for jaden- being born into that nightmare, and from being that little cute guy from pursuit of happyness, with all the enablers who turn kids like him into broken human beings who has no personality other than being a meme.

new carlton is of course shia lebeuf, one trick pony who was canned by a maniac producer in west hollywood, and is now trying to use his once fame and scandal to get revenge as well as re-ignite his career despite having no talent. It's the opposite of a buddy comedy.

It's more like, louie meets rick and morty meets breaking bad meets house.

Start your characters in hell. That's what I say. That's why I would bet on Jaden. The admirable thing about fresh prince was that it was light, until it wasn't. suddenly it would get real dark and serious. I really loved how it always threw you off.

I mean if they go for it I'll give it a chance but they have a lot to live up to - I can't imagine they come anywhere close to the original especially when it comes to the characters (RIP Avery).

Legacy of the show?

Why do people act like this show was great? It's Fresh Prince we're talking about here, not Seinfeld.

Have you watched the show recently? Both its humor and its messages still hold up today.

Will Smith was a shit actor for most of the show, too. In fact, Jaden has about 8 billion percent more acting under his belt than Big Willie did at their respective ages.

I'm not saying, I'm just saying.

LOL no. Smith had charisma flowing out of his every pore. Jaden might have more experience but he hasn't demonstrated he has what it takes to be loveable.

The show was consistent even during the changing of Vivian. I can still watch a episode of Fresh Prince and laugh my ass off to this very day. The show aged well.

has anyone brought this up?

I think a reverse fresh prince would be great, rich black kid goes to poor/lower middle class neighborhood . DO IT WILL

That could work too. It could tackle the same race issues Fresh Prince did, but from the perspective of a Carlton type. There haven't been many black shows focused on a poor family compared to middle class and up.

Will watch if it stars Jaden and he gets to do whatever he wants.

Will weep for humanity and actively avoid the show otherwise.

I hope it's more like the first few seasons of the show and not like the last two.

The last two seasons had their moments, but they were absolutely nowhere near the level of the first three.

Do you actually watch television?

I guess "original content" is an overstatement since almost every show follows some sort of formula, but digging up the corpses of shows that worked in the past just seems like they're running out of ideas and being lazy.

Fun fact: to avoid having to shoot on location at the house, they just had Jazz wear the same clothes in any scene where he's going to get thrown out.

I'm okay with a remake. If it sucks, it doesn't make the make the original series any worse.

Pass. Don't get me wrong. I love the old show. But I don't see this being good at all, and you can expect Jaden to be the main character. Watch.

The thing that scares me the most about this is the likelihood of the remake losing the thematic resonance of the original. Granted it didn't always do it with a light touch and grace, but when the message landed, there were some incredible episodes about identity, family, and legacy. Fresh Prince was lightning in a bottle. It all came together in a kind of magic way that most shows just don't. Despite Will stuttering his lines and being paralyzed with fear on the set of the show's early episodes, despite the pitch coming off as eye-roll worthy, what we ended up with was kind of a miracle.

Obviously elements of the show aren't perfect. Mostly Will being total creep towards women and the kinda gross way the show objectified most of its attractive female guest stars now just plays as out of touch. But the relationship with Uncle Phil (in no small part to James Avery), Carlton's conflict between his view of the world vs. the reality, and Janet Hubert's ability to completely capture the screen when her character had to take control (despite the behind-the-scenes issues with her), all helped take the show to another level. Also the Carlton dance.

But my fear is that the show's blunt approach to tackling its bigger issues will be lost. And instead, we'd be left with a show that is simply another family sitcom with a wacky dynamic between its leads, and no willingness to go deeper. But Fresh Prince did cut deeper, and that's why we remember it, that's why we care about it, and despite its aged failings, it is still worth watching. This has the potential to reach a whole new generation, and don't want this opportunity to be wasted.

That is a high bar to reach.
