You cannot? As in put up a wall and a nice gate?
Then again the vast majority of American homes have the lawn barely a few meters long, I always considered a proper home to be 1/3 - 1/4 of total land space of your property.
 
You can't? My mom has a wrought iron fence in her front yard. Don't be paranoid you can let the kids out and bbq even without a fence.

I see it to how rough a neighborhood is. Fences up rough type. No fences likely to be pretty good.

Besides BBQing is for the backyard where the kids are normally let out to cause havoc.
 
My front lawn is an acre is size and my front door is 150 feet from the street. I don't have a fence and it is quite usable. I've had several gatherings out there.
 
You can't let your kids out without a fence? Are they having The Purge in your neighborhood? I feel real sorry for everyone who grew up without unsupervised outdoor play, it's just as glamorous as all the '80s movies make it look. Are things more dangerous today? Were people foolish to let their kids play unsupervised? The United States is a big place, maybe some areas really aren't safe for that sort of play.
I remember there was a little Africa-shaped island in the middle of a nearby river. We called it Africa. Further down the river, in the woods, there was a fence with a hole in it, which led right onto a nearby golf course.
There was a Puerto Rican family in a nearby neighborhood who sold these sick desserts called limbers (they pronounced it limbay) for a quarter. I want one of those.
Oh no. This is no good. My 2000s nostalgia has already been severely acting up, I've even been listening to Avril Lavigne and Simple Plan again, you can't make me think about the past this much. We have to go back. I need to go back.

I can put up a fence in my front yard, though I don't see the point. I can do just about whatever I want on my property, I can have a bonfire on it if I wish. My next door neighbors fire their guns now and then on their property. Folks do what they want where I'm at. I'm right in between rural and suburban America, with access to high speed internet but not subject to city ordinances.

You can't? You might be right, but I'm not familiar with such an ordinance.

Anyway, it is quite useful, at least for us. It's where the septic tank is buried.
 
Uh having a buffer between the street & the front door is kind of a big deal for both privacy & safety reasons, even if its not fenced. The driveway will also often run parallel to the yard so it creates more parking space too.
 
I've always felt front lawns were a bit of a waste myself too. move the house a bit and give me a bigger back yard so I can stall a bigger pool
 
I agree with you. Nobody really does much in front yards. Especially with rules on maintenance and such. Having land is great. Bisecting a tiny plot with a house then using only part of that land is silly.
 
Front lawns are presented to the world not to play or bbq in, find a good fence for your BACKYARD, that's more important, and from someone who's been living in an American middle class neighborhood for 15+ years.
 
Front lawns are play zones for kids in neighborhoods where there are a lot of kids around. Simply because they are more accessible and it's easier to tell if your friends are home/playing if they are in their front yards than when they are in their backyards.

What the hell are you talking about?

Maybe its a local permitting issue , but ive never seen it be illegal to fence yoir front yard in the US.

Cant speak about canada and mex tho

Like users said backyard is intended for play and socializing, but ive seen plenty of people use their front yards (with and without fences) and their driveways to play and socialize. Even firepit and bbq on their driveways.

Who puts a fence in their front yard? Must be a US thing. Only time you really see it is if it's a really nice house and they put up that thick tall brush stuff which looks impossible to get through.

Yup I've never liked them.
If I'm at home I want some privacy so I've never used the front yard for anything.

Thankfully the place where I'm living now only has a tiny front yard and a bigger backyard
 
We have shared backyard fences, meaning one neighbor owns one side and you own the other. Some homes have their own wooden fence. I see fewer chain link fences, which I grew up around. I like tall backyard fences. I'm not sure about front yard fences. That's rich neighborhoods around here. I like trees. The suburbia around here have fewer trees that I prefer. I didn't realize how much I liked trees. I love watching the wind blow through the trees.

Front yard is waste of space without fence. I can't put pool there, no play ground, no BBQ etc.

Not a Canadian issue. ALmost all of us have open front yards. I've never heard someone say they want to put up a fence.

I see kids play in their front yard all the time.

But people here BBQ in the back. Probably because it's one part privacy and another part that's where everyone's BBQ and deck is. Anyone with a gas line BBQ will have that at the back too since that's where the external gas lines are. Nobody has an Enbridge gas pipe in the front yard.

Every province to my knowledge allows for a front yard fence to be installed if you want one. There are high-limits based on other factors depending your exact location, but it's 100% allowable if you get a permit and don't live in an HOA.

As far as privacy goes for the front yard, there are multiple ways to tackle that. Trees, shrubs, Lattice to support some sort of decorative vine, a deck with a couple of taller sides for privacy (depends on local by-laws).

A house down the street from me grows a row of corn in the front of their front yard patio area for privacy while out there in the summer
 
This kind of fence elevates a front lawn massively. I'd never have a house without one.

Most people live in an HOA neighborhood and they can't do shit. I would never buy a house where there's an HOA. Spend all this money and you can't do what you want with your house and property. Fuck them HOAs

I live in a non hoa neighborhood. We have a nice big fenced in backyard and a nice size (no fence) front yard. My kids play in both and in the street. We live on a culdesac road so there is no through traffic. No need for a fence in the front but I could put one up if I really wanted to.
There are plenty of places in America where it's common to have front yard fences too. Mostly older Victorian style southern homes in downtown areas.
 
Who fences a front yard?

I live on 2 acres and have no fence and I do not want one. I want to put in a pool and still don't want a fence.

I dont know how common HOAs are in my area, but sounds like condo management style with rules.

When I lived in a condo, you got no choice. You got to be part of the condo rules. And it makes sense because an owner is part of the building and uses parking, amenities, security etc...

But no way, no how would I ever buy a non-condo home with rules. Not even a condo townhouse complex. Freehold forever. I'm fine being responsible and paying for my own repairs, paint, and landscaping.

I hear you, but I am all about the back yard. I dont want my neighbors and people walking down the street to see what I'm up to. I save the back yard for privacy and the front yard for the house intro.
 
It makes the environment nicer for others driving around, increases the value of other peoples homes on smaller plots and gives neighbourhood dogs a place to poop. Fantastic!
 
A lawn is a waste of space, period. It's almost useless for the environment and unproductive.

Plant some bushes, flowers, herbs and berries.

I agree, the buffer area that prevents cars from zooming past my front door whenever I open it is completely useless, I hate it
 
A lot of places regulate front fences because of how they can reduce visibility for cars. I think they don't just make it for corner lots so it's fair I guess.

Which is why you are often only allowed a low fence, or a wire fence that can be seen through.

But that all depends on where you live really, and then of course you can say "fuck off I'm building what I want" and see what happens lol
