Chapter 95 just came out, and they still don't know when it will end iirc. Have they actually said there will be around 50 episodes? I thought they hadn't decided yet.

Chapter 95 was just released. Chapters are a meaty 40-50 pages, serialized monthly Arakawa has said she doesn't want it to go past 100 chapters. Some speculate that it could go to 105 chapters, since that would make it finish about two weeks before Brotherhood if Brotherhood were to be 64/65 eps rather than 51.
Sounds good, thanks for the answers guys. :)

No problem!

I really do recommend that everyone reads the manga at some point, too, since the anime has already skipped over some nice lines, speeches, and events given in the manga.

I agree that everyone should read the manga at some point, but I really appreciate what Brotherhood is doing. Even though a lot of great lines/exchanges/scenes are omitted, the main gist of the manga is kept - especially since they're condensing roughly two chapters per episode.

It would definitely be more expensive if Brotherhood was literally a regurgitation of the manga, as the episodes would probably be hour-long episodes.

Who knows, maybe they actually did make the little scenes from the manga that have been cut so far (ie: Ed + Al sparring with Armstrong, the "Brother! This is the first time someone has treated me like a child since I became this armor!" joke), but cut some of them due to having to confine the episode to the ~22 minutes or so of the half hour time slot they had to work with on TV.

Maybe the episodes will be of variable length from 24-26 minutes on the DVDs with those little extra scenes included :D

and to be honest, I'm not sure if a 1 chapter per ep pace could work, even for a show as face paced as FMA. See how the first two eps of the first anime turned out: Tons of filler to make the first two manga chapters take up two eps.

I think a ~1.5 episodes for two chapters is the right pace (3 eps for 4 chapters), or about a ~75 episode pace for the whole manga story.

Just a heads up that Episode 7 just aired in japan, and duckroll is, as usual, disappointed, bored, and angry.

As a heads up, please ignore duckroll's complaints :D

I loved this episode because of the cheesiness of the humour, but for the first time since the series' debut I have to agree the tension was missing from the serious scenes. The revelation of the
Philosopher's Stone's contents
works better as a cliffhanger.

I'm really enjoying this, but I think it's because the source material is ridiculously good.

For a BONES production, it's disappointing in a lot of ways. Maybe when they finally start covering stuff the original didn't, the production will ramp up? :shrugs. Even barely animated FMA is good to me.

Can't believe this hasn't been posted here already! European FMA fans rejoyce!!

The series premiered May 16th with the first 7 episodes of FMA available with subtitles in 11 different languages, HQ audio and HD video.

I've already checked out many of the episodes with Danish subtitles, and they defintely do a great translation job. As far as I can tell it's a direct translation from jap->danish (and not a crappy jap->eng->danish that I'm avoiding all the time).

Now there's really no excuse to watch this series illegally. Big applause for the way this series has been handled internationally. *claps*

Hopefully Ep8 will show that BONES is taking the animation of the series seriously even if it's covering old stuff. I expect some pretty solid action from it, and I hope I'm not disappointed. :/

Wow, so there's actually a legal way of watching Brotherhood with fucking FINNISH subtitles.

And they're pretty good quality too and not just some rushed Babelfish translation.

I'm impressed.

Just as a heads-up, FUNimation is finally putting up the episodes on Youtube. They've only uploaded up to episode four, so they still suck, however.

Thoughts about episode eight:
Envy is such a dork.

The previous series needed more Barry the Chopper too.

After being away for the weekend, finally caught ep. 8

The fights seemed to have been animated better and more Barry is always a good thing.

Envy's still an idiot, but then again, he was always 'love to hate' kinda character for me.

Phone conversation between Roy & Maes (both during the episode and after the credits) were made of win... man I'm gonna miss Hughes...

Great episode for this week.

So Funimation removed the videos from the website? Will they be back? The episodes, I mean. really felt like some FullMetal and Youtube is only up to episode 6...

I hope so. I have a feeling that they've only removed the FMA episodes as a precaution while they sort out the details of the One Piece hack and leak.

I have to admit though, I'm glad I managed to catch ep. 8 on Funi's site last Thursday.

Felt a little fillerish, as though we were just watching them zoom as quickly as possible through the down-time that was already covered in FMA-1. Not "bad" per-se, but nothing we don't feel like we've seen before. It gets really good past this point though.

Episode 9 was much much much better than the first anime's corresponding episodes. Especially since i considered one of those two episodes from the first series to be the second worst episode in the series (after only episode 4). So yeah, big improvement.

Oh I'm sure of it, I def didn't noticed that part in the first run through so I'm glad they pointed it out in this one. Either way I really enjoyed this episode...had a different feeling about it.

Please don't give them that much credit. It wasn't a hack. Someone changed the episode number from a previous episode and the URL was the exact same. The video was sitting on their server completely unprotected.

Doesn't work for me in the UK, it just says "This video is not available in your country" whenever I try to play one. Perhaps it's revenge for our Euroscepticism. :lol Luckily funimation does works for us in the UK but unfortunately it isn't in HD and it takes forever to stream.

REALLY??? HAHHHAHAHAHAHAHA! Good job, FUNi, good job ;)

Who gives a shit how it was hacked, or if it had protection? It seems one blasted idiot ruined it for everyone.

Now I'm stuck at episode 7.

The over-the-topness of the first act was probably a good hint. Although, I think I'm just too much of a cynic nowadays. :lol

While I enjoy the pace of this new series and can't wait for it to hit the new territory of the manga, its not doing a good a job emotionally as the original.

Character death spoilers:
Of specific note for me was one of the most emotionally resonant scenes in the original anime, that they chose not to replicate here, probably because it wasn't in the manga. After Hughes has died, Ed on the train looks out the window and see's Hughes waving at him from a random station in slow motion, before the train rockets onwards.

A simple enough scene, but it worked so well on so many multiple levels and it just got me. That feeling you get when you find out at what time someone close to you and where you were at the time. That supernatural feeling you psychologically convince yourself you must have felt, and the train aka life rocketing onwards to its destination regardless,
was one of the most poigniant scenes in any animation I can care to remember. Disappointing that it wasn't in, and I think the Nina episodes also lacked that dramatic horrifying punch from the 1st anime as well.

I'd like to see someone with spare time and effort to burn splice together the 2 adaptions when its finished to transmute the perfect FMA series.

I'd say the problem is that they're going really fast paced with the new series. We weren't anywhere near as attached as we were in the original series.

I dont think thats it at all. Rewatch the original again, and the entire segment is done in double quick time with no fluff in between. (It's on youtube, not sure if I'm allowed to link, and is annoyingly without the Railway Station scene I'm describing that I desperately want to see again).

Also the music isn't doing it for me in this adaption. It lacks that absolutely heart pulling tragic piano of the 1st series. We'll see. Maybe they'll do the bit I want to see at the start of the next episode, but I doubt it.

Edit: Aha, found it. Yeah, it was an extension of the Apple Pie train scene, so theyve already done that :(

I find the pacing to be fine.

Might as well get through all of the stuff that was explored in the first series faster so that they can reach the point where the manga & first series diverged greatly and then slow down, as it'll be new territory for those not familiar with the manga.

SecretBonusPoint, I don't mean this episode. I meant the time you've spent with the character up to this point.

Auron_Kale, I agree, but it is a little disappointing because I can't really call this the definitive version. I think what I said earlier might ring true with the best way to watch this being to watch the beginning of the first series then end of the second.

Unfortunately, the first half of the original has all the goofy shit mixed in like Sloth being a homunculi of the Elric's mother and other stuff, so the 2 aren't entirely compatible, hence why a large amount of splicing would be required between the 2 versions to get it to gel.

I actually thought Sloth being a Homunculus of Trisha was a pretty powerful plotline. Not only did it drive home the idea of that "uncrossable threshold," but it intensified the familial dynamics that ran throughout the show. Very moving, in my opinion.

I knew this episode was going to be "that" episode but it still made me sad. :(

I admit it didn't have as much dramatic impact like the first series because of the fast pace of this series but it still made me choked up.

dang had to watch the death of a favorite character again.

I agree that it didnt have as much effect as in the 1st incarnation of the series.

Indeed.

I don't know what everyone else is expecting, but it seems clear to me throughout all 10 episodes so far that they are very very very aware of how the first anime handled everything, and they're trying to provide a different approach to pretty much all the scenes that were already faithfully adapted the first time around. For both the Elric backstory and for episode 10, that means focusing more on the before and the after and less on the emotional heartstring pulling of the even itself. If the first series' version was the emotional punch, this version hit the other characters involved more (especially Mustang) and delved deeper into what it means for them and their motivations and ambitions.

Ultimately, it's not really worth trying to overdo the melodrama of the situation to try to replicate the impact of the original. Better for the show to simply be its own thing.
