Not to mention
earlier in the series, you saw Hohenheim going around Amestris releasing souls from himself into the ground.

Yep, as revealed in 61,
Hohenheim's circle reversed the philosopher stone process while Scar's circle reverse the Alchemy "block".

There was some pretty good story arc pay off in this episode, definitely. Next week's going to be epic/tragic though.

Ccrook: Yes, ep 61.
King bradley going out like a badass. He gets his arms cut off, but using the last ounce of his strength, grabs his sword in his fucking teet hand impales scar with it

Wes

A lot seemed to happen in this episode. Did they cram a lot in from the manga? (I haven't read it so can't judge)

They covered ch 105 and 2/3 of chapter 106

Episode 61- Kinda packed a lot of stuff into one episode. I think it was about 2 chapters worth of content.
Also, it was so FUCKING AWESOME when Ed turned himself into a damn philosopher's stone just to defeat Pride.

Really? Because I thought it made very little sense. Now there is fetus Selim? What?

Actually, outside of the weird end to the fight against Selim I thought it was a really solid episode. Hopefully they explain what that was about later.

Wait, so there are
Two counter transmutation circles? D:
Also, isn't next ep
Al's sacrifice?

So some questions to clear shit up for me.

Father opened a gate on Earth using 5 sacrifices who had already opened the gate to truth.. the sun and moon combining open a gate to truth (the creepy thing that steals limbs for playing god). He then consumed Truth but it took a shitload of power to do so.. which is why he transmuted all of Armestis into a giant philosophers stone so that he could use that power to contain truth.

Truth is sort of god but also sort of knowledge.. so when the sacrifices opened the portal they all remembered some knowledge that normal people wouldn't posses. Now he possesses all of it.

Am I right so far? And now they need to expend fathers energy so he will be consumed by truth or whatever and die. And he is going to run around straight killing fools to create philosophers stones to retain enough power to keep truth inside of him.

Someone really needs to explain what the fuck is up with the fetus though.

This hasn't hit Trigun or Eva levels of stupid yet because I can still (mostly) follow the plotline and it hasn't gone completely off the rails.

They don't.

All I can guess is that Ed pulled out the human sacrifice that was used to create the humunculus version of selim. So it was supposed to be a "Oh no, how tragic, they made a fetus into a monster.

But then Envy turns into a slug in her true form, so who knows what the fuck that was about.

Pride wasn't made from a sacrifice. He was made purely from Father, like the others except for Wrath.

Question about episode 18:

When/how did Mustang and the others learn about the Homunculi? Did that happen off-screen or am I just forgetting something?

Also, was that Envy listening in on Mustang and Hawkeye's phone conversation?

I still can't believe how nice and helpful Barry is. :lol

Now you're confusing the first anime with the manga/brotherhood storylines. Homunculi are created from Father (or, in the case of King Bradley and Greedling, humans injected with philosopher's stones). They are basically humans special abilities and philosophre stones as their cores.

Pride is supposedly the deadliest sin, and all of the other six sins are said to be a form of Pride. Just think of Pride's true form being that ugly little fetus thing a way to make him similar to envy (like his abilitty to eat others a power like that of gluttony, or his ability to cut through things similar to lust's ultimate spear).

Mustang hasn't learned about the homunculi specifically yet. he does know about some kind of organization higher up within the military (or one that is using the military) that is carrying out experiments and manipulating events behind the shadows. He learned that from Barry. And he enlisted the help of Ling Yao and his guardians after barry rescued them.

Edit: And yes, barry is awesome. Arakawa has a way at making murderous bastards awesome like that ;)

Just finished 61. That was a good episode. There's just one thing that bothered me though. I didn't like that they cut
the scene where Hohenheim was defending against Father's attack and the souls within him were encouraging him and telling him to use them. To me, that scene really showed the difference between Hohenheim and Father than any other could. Hohenheim didn't just use the souls inside him for energy. To him, they were friends and colleagues. They were willing to do whatever they could to help Hohenheim, even if it meant he used them and they ceased to exist.

Essentially, yes.
Scar's circle was the actual counter to the giant circle and free Alchemy, Hohenheim's circle was to specifically reverse the philosopher stone creation process, if that makes sense.

Also,
yes, Al's sacrifice should be next episode.
.

Regarding Selim, that will payoff/be explained in the last episode.

They did that when they cut to the
Hohenheim montage of him releasing stones into the land. They basically realized they were being used to save other people and were happy to do so.

But they had drawings of Lust, Envy, Greed, and their symbol, and Brada (sp?) identified them as homunculi.

Ah right. I just skip those now. Even the episode titles are massive spoilers now... but I guess it doesn't matter much since if you wanted to know what happens, you probably would have looked already.

I dread when 61 airs on Adult Swim. There wasn't an opening in the episode this week. I wonder what they'll cut for commercials when it airs.

Probably do a cut down version of the ending.

Ep 61 was epic...IMO that was the best ending of any of the eps so far. Also
Kimblee
taking his hat off and walking like that was awesome.

Btw I'm confused about one thing.
Why are there Gates on the moon and on the Earth? Also where is the Gate that Ed, Al, Mustang, etc. located? Like there's a moon gate, earth gate, and what's the normal gate?

Well, essentially
the "normal gate" is within every single character in the show. It's "inside" them. Every single character possesses their own gate, which is their source of alchemy.

Now, here are some guesses of mine as I cannot be sure if I'm right. Just as people have gates, which contain information about the world, as far as I've understood that, planets have their own gates that contain information about the whole universe. This part isn't really explained that well in neither manga, nor anime, so I can't be certain this is correct.

OK, so basically everything has a gate right (except inanimate objects I guess besides planets. I'm talking about things like a chair.)? Theoretically could that extend to other living things...like animals? Animals wouldn't have any knowledge of how to do alchemy but maybe if they were taught extensively, it's possible?

Btw, do May's knives when she uses a transmutation circle help control/guide Alkahestry's power?

Well, I'd assume that
just like in certain religions humans do have souls, but other animals don't, the same in the FMA universe - while people have gates, other animals don't posses them.

Once again, it isn't really explained within any canonical material, so I'm just making guesses here.

Edit: Well, I guess knives just make circle that can be controlled on range, by sending "energy" to the circle, instead of directly touching it with hands.

OK. I actually have one more question:

Father is supposedly a part of the existence that comes from the Gate. What's the point of him...like...being god again? Was it to have an altogether different existence from Truth so he could stand toe to toe with him...but in the real world? IDK, it never really made sense why he wants power.

He wants to be perfect. That's why he cast off his "sins" and why he wanted to consume truth.

That's not really a great motivation but w/e, I still think he's awesome :lol Although
if he just went back to being a part of Truth technically he'd be a perfect being. Not as an individual, but...interesting to see parts of Truth having another side.

Great episode, lot happened but i felt it was all handled very well.

The whole scene with Pride and Ed was crazy, and the worst part is they made me actually feel really sorry for Salim(sp?) where it was flashing to his "family" and his voice went to a normal sounding kid begging for his life. They did the same with Envy, 2 characters that were real bastards and yet i felt bad for them when it was all over.

Wrath was badass to the end, my mouth dropped when he grabbed the broken sword with his teeth to stab Scar, he truely was one of the most frightening (along with Pride).

Makes me sad to think ther eare only 3 more episodes left, its been a gerat ride and i will be sad to see FMA gone.

yeah, I actually felt sorry for envy in his last moments too. which is amazing because they were treading dangerously close to narm territory.

and fuck yeah wrath. fuck yeah ed owning pride. pleasant to see that Father's laz0rs look way better then in the manga, too.

I forgot to put up my impressions of Episode 18:

ROSS IS ALIVE!! kinda obvious though. is it wrong for me to want Ed and All say she is the mother they didn't have for most of their life? whatever. Barry wanting to chop up his own body is funny. and at the end, I was wondering where the hell is he going. he clearly isn't going to Xing, and he can't be at Central.

Why would they say that to Ross of all people?

well just by my knowledge of the old series and the new, Ross seems to be the mother figure for them. who else is there?
Ross is a minor character in this series. There is no real motherly figure in this series, probably stemming from the fact that this time around FMA is less angsty.

ah, forgot about Izumi. prolly cause they haven't shown her is so long. she better be in more episodes.

still like Ross better
Izumi has bigger role in Brotherhood than in the first series, you can expect to see her a lot more. And her kicking ass.
Ross on the other hand won't appear now until endgame (does that count as a spoiler?)

Izumi was pretty cool in the original... in Brotherhood she's just one dreadlocked ball of doomawesome.

I never watch them on time so I've never known what day they hit the internetz.

Whoa, Ep. 61 - man that was one otherworldly, brilliant and undeniably incredible episode - the animation was absolutely insane,..
Hohenheim's Reverse Philosopher's Stone circle, god damn that was brilliant - and this:

Father: "So all you did was implant your Philosopher's Stones. But those are just points. Without a circle, there is no alchemy. That's a basic principle of alchemy."

Hohenheim: "There IS a circle. A huge, powerful circle that'll activate by itself even if something were to happen to me!

The shadow of the moon that occurs from the Solar Eclipse!!"
SOOOO fucking EPIC.

Scar vs King Bradley - some of the best combat animation thus far. Bradley's character could not have been more perfect - I just really wish Lin Yao and Bradley had a chance to go at each other sword on sword, no bodyguards attached.

The Reverse Nation-wide Transmutation / Turnabout Circle activation was also fantastic - Tectonic Energy now completely unrestricted for Alchemists' -

Seriously, I've now decided I must picked up where I left off and finish reading the manga. This is soo good it's impossible to over-saturate.

Awesome! Thanks for the heads up. But I'd be kidding myself if I thought I could just skip about 4 chapters and read the last two in time for the episodes - it's too easy an opportunity to spoil it.

gat damn this episode was worth it just for seeing Mustang kill Lust. I get the feeling she will be coming back though (don't spoil it!). how did she die in the first series? and Hoenheim appears (fully)! I didn't expect that to happen. can't wait for the next episode :D
