Masato Kato showed some early sketches he did for FFXI way back when.

はて。なにやら、お届け物が。
ＦＦ１１、今年１１月にてグランド・フィナーレとか。
サービス開始は、２００２年５月。
１４年かあ。
いや、よくほんと、ここまで続けて来られたよな。
運営するスタッフも、遊んでくれたプレイヤーも、
すごいとしか言いようがない。
当初からヴァナディールをさすらった人達は、
どれだけ感慨深い終わり方を迎えるのだろう。

ＦＦ１１、グランド・フィナーレ・キャンペーン。
てことで、感謝の意をこめて。笑
一番最初、２０００年くらいに描いた世界案。
まだヴァナディールではなく、ヴァンドール界と
いう呼称だった。
ていうか、突然、親父が死んで、一月後くらいの
頃か……。

おまけ。
ボツになったガルカ案。
完全に人外と化している。
まあ、確かにこれでは、選びたいという
プレイヤーも多くないか。笑
僕は好きだが。

おまけ、その２。
２００１年５月って、１４年前かよ。

ふと、ニックネームについて思う。
昔の友達って、いつまでもニックネームで
憶えてるよね。
中学の同級生に、ベロンチョと呼ばれている
女子がいて、本名は田中なのだが。
中学でそう呼ばれているということは、大抵
小学生時代になんらかのエピソードがあって、
ずっともうそれ以来彼女はベロンチョと
呼ばれ続けて来たわけだ。
僕と知り合った時点で彼女は歴然とベロンチョ
だったので、僕も深く考えず、またいかにして
彼女がベロンチョなり得たのか知ろうともせずに、
最初から僕のなかで彼女はベロンチョであり、
今もベロンチョであり続けている。
で、そのベロンチョの友達に、グリーンマンと
呼ばれる女子がいて、さすがに女子でグリーン
マンとはこれいかに？　と当時の僕も気になって
その由来を聞いたところ、それがまたちょっと
恥ずかしいエピソードで、そんなことでグリーン
マンなんてあだ名つけるなよ、女子に、と
僕なんかは思ったのであるが、小学生の男子の
バカさ、脳天気で無邪気な残酷さは、もう
どうしようもないので、仕方ない。
で、彼女とは同じクラスになったことはないので、
本名もわからず、僕のなかで彼女もグリーンマン
であり続けるのであった。
そういう意味では、僕も充分に、脳天気に残酷な
わけではあるが。
しかし、このネーミングのセンスときたら。笑

おまけ、その３。
スタート当初から、人間、エルフ、ネコ娘、ガルカ、
タルタルといった種族分けは、すんなり固まっていた。
というか、ネコ娘とガルカに関しては、この種族を
男女両タイプ作る余裕はない、ということだったので、
ならその２種はそれぞれ、女と、男タイプだけでいいや、
という、いま思うとかなり強引というか、むちゃくちゃな
姿勢ではあった。
大胆というか、バカというか。笑
いや、でもここで、それじゃあ、ネコ人（男女）か、
ガルカ（男女）のどっちかにしよう、ではなくて、
平気で、ネコ娘とガルカ男で行こう、とするところが
企画力というか決断力というものであろうよ。笑

いや、でも、当時の赤ん坊が中学生になってる
わけだから、本当にすごいことではある。

I can't read Japanese so I have no idea what he's saying. One thing I do notice is that Vana'diel was initially called Vandole. Fitting since FFXI director Koichi Ishii and producer Hiromichi Tanaka were also the creative minds behind Secret of Mana.

These maps are always fascinating to me, so I went through and translated what I could read. Really hard to make out some of Kato's chickenscratch, but this should give a better idea of this early world draft.

A lot of interesting areas here that seem to end up getting scrapped before the design was finalized. And there's the rail line that people have found in that one beta zone.
