Future of the GameBoy line..

So, as we all have heard many times, the DS is not designed to compete with the PSP. Whether it's true or not does not matter for this topic, just that it poses an interesting question. Mainly: If/when the next gameboy surfaces, what can Nintendo do to influence people to buy it?

Certainly, we can't really expect anything better than current-gen console graphics. They can't add any "innovative" interfaces (that's the point of the DS). So what can they do?

Try to imagine how the next gameboy will differ from the PSP...it's very hard to do. Maybe a better pricepoint than the PSP is sporting now...but that will be years from now and PSP may well be $150 or $100. The only possible thing that comes to mind is the games. And I don't mean to say "only"...because games certainly *are* the point of a gaming-platform, but I'm trying to think of hardware differences mainly..

Another plausable route is for Nintendo to keep gameboy strictly 2-D and save 3-D, et. al. for DS. Imagine the GBASP formfactor with an incredibly high-res screen and a 2-D processor that generates crisp, clear, vibrant scenes. I'm imagining something we haven't seen before in practice. Think Guilty-Gear sprite quality x 10. I'm assuming this could be done with some kind of crazy vector stuff so scaling, rotating, etc. would all look beautiful. What do you think?

Ideas?

(Note: Please don't turn this into a PSP vs. DS thread...there are way too many of those.)

We had this already in another thread I can't be bothered to dig out.
There has been a showing to Nintendo staff of three different Game Boy concepts recently. (You can call me a liar about now.)
They ranged from super-cheap almost Pokemon Mini-esque units to a high-end PSP-a-like.
Read your PM.

PM me please? I'm curious to how you'd know this.

Hey Folder, pls PM me too. As you see from my "origins of DS" thread, I'm trying to put a lot of thinking on where Nintendo heads next.

the next gb will more than likely incorporate some of the successfull ideas from the ds and meet or exceed the psp in terms of power and features...I can see them following one of two paths...either a: miniaturiziing the gc chipset for mobile gaming or b: contracting ati to build a new chipset.

There will be bannings if I do not get a PM... :)

If anyone fancies forwarding a PM my way I would be most 'appy about it! :p

I think they should keep it the other way around incidentally. Keep DS down to N64 level 3d where the game needs it, but for the most part stick to 2d or 2.5d type experiences. The important thing about the DS is that you get games on it you can't get anywhere else. The DS has a really great potential to be home to games anyone can play regardless of ability. 3d will convolute that process... so go for high powered 3d on the next Gameboy, and make the DS all about unique experiences.

Hey. The offer was meant for the thread starter.
If I get banned for not wanting to send a private message, um, wow. Don't really know what to say. Up to you I guess. If you're a mod, and I assume you are, do you think it's acceptable to demand information on pain of banning? I think it's a shocking way to go about things.

:lol this guy is too much sometimes. And remember, the GAF is NOT a democracy.

I think the next gameboy will be a very small gameboy. The way we are going by size isn't the pocket way. I think the main sellingpoint of a next gba will be it's size.

ps: PM me too please :D

Folder, seriously: if you don't want 1,000 PM requests, don't insinuate that you are privy to some kind of secret information and then offer to PM one specific person about it.

I know right!

Ooooh, please PM me the hot juicy info! I gots to be in the know!!!

come on people don't make this a pm thread.

I seriously don't know why nintendo just doesn't license dreamcast technology from sega. Sega said they could put the DC on one single small chip way back in 2001. It would be simple, cheap and on par with psp. Maybe they could even expand it with more RAM and such.
