Future of the GameBoy line..

So, as we all have heard many times, the DS is not designed to compete with the PSP. Whether it's true or not does not matter for this topic, just that it poses an interesting question. Mainly: If/when the next gameboy surfaces, what can Nintendo do to influence people to buy it?

Certainly, we can't really expect anything better than current-gen console graphics. They can't add any "innovative" interfaces (that's the point of the DS). So what can they do?

Try to imagine how the next gameboy will differ from the PSP...it's very hard to do. Maybe a better pricepoint than the PSP is sporting now...but that will be years from now and PSP may well be $150 or $100. The only possible thing that comes to mind is the games. And I don't mean to say "only"...because games certainly *are* the point of a gaming-platform, but I'm trying to think of hardware differences mainly..

Another plausable route is for Nintendo to keep gameboy strictly 2-D and save 3-D, et. al. for DS. Imagine the GBASP formfactor with an incredibly high-res screen and a 2-D processor that generates crisp, clear, vibrant scenes. I'm imagining something we haven't seen before in practice. Think Guilty-Gear sprite quality x 10. I'm assuming this could be done with some kind of crazy vector stuff so scaling, rotating, etc. would all look beautiful. What do you think?

Ideas?

(Note: Please don't turn this into a PSP vs. DS thread...there are way too many of those.)

Well I don't think you can rule out interface differences. I think people generally expect that even though the next GB probably won't have 2 screens, a touch screen is still a good possibility. And of course Miyamoto mentioned that they wanted to include motion sensors in the DS, but ended up having to cut that out, so that's something that might show up in the next GB.

Maybe I missed something somewhere, but since when has anything related to spong been considered trustworthy?

It basically doesn't matter what the next GB system is-- if it has Pokemon games on it, it'll sell.

still some more buttons or something would be nice

This guy is from Spong and knows not a thing about the inner-workings at Nintendo. Trust me. I of all people know a liar when I see one. And didn't this guy just earlier claim RE4 is coming to Xbox and it would be confirmed shortly? Where is this news?

You could have left off after the fifth word there, you know.

GameBoy Next should have Gamecube or Gamecube+ graphics. better than PSP thanks to ATI. higher than PSP resolution screen. wireless but no touch (thats for DS)

price point of $129 ~ $149

I’m not getting into a cock-measuring competition. You can choose not to believe me, it makes no odds. If you can’t imagine that we are told things OTR by people at N we have worked with closely for six years, again I really don’t care. Doing what we do, we end up with more stuff we can’t publish that stuff we can. I’m sure any other journalists here will be in similar positions.

sorry, but its too late. If Nintendo now come out with a handheld gamecube, with touchscreen, widescreen etc, they are just following Sony.

They also can't really move for at least a year/18 months without pissing a lot of people off about DS.

Nintendo's dominance of the handheld market was about them controlling the speed of evolution. They don't have that anymore.

trouble is, Nintendo haven't done so well when trying to *keep up* with the Joneses. They prefer to have no competition.

I used to think that this gave them the freedom and space to develop the games we all know and love.

I know think it is simply trying to stifle technology to keep costs down and control the market. Minimum investment for maximum return. Standard business practice, but doesn 't work too well in a competitive environment.

If Nintendo's dominance in the portable space goes down with PSP, then it's clear that Nintendo isn't capable of dealing when they have serious competition...it all began with Sega, too.

Hah, this thread is great, no one believe sp0ng but they still must see what they have to say. :lol

p.s I agree GB is d00med. If they follow sony's lead they'll get wh00ped just like in home consoles, they cant go too revolutionary because that'd step on the DS's toes, i cant see a direction the next GB could go that would be new enough to make people think "yeah i really need that new gameboy", backwards compatibility isnt going to do it either with the DS around.

Yeah, like going on message boards and fucking bragging about info that they have and no one else does, and telling folks they'll share if they get a PM. Really fucking professional...

The fact that I was made curious, enough to ask for a PM with a bit of seriousness, is fucking embarassing on my part, and I will forever regret it.

Hey, am I the only one who only knows about Spong via the GAF constantly exposing the site as the number source of gaming bullshit on the web?

Heh...I meant that, beginning with the Gen VS SNES time-period, Nintendo has shown consistent loss of marketshare in the home console market. They simply don't adapt fast enough to deal with serious competition in that space. I suppose we'll have to see how things go in the portable market once PSP is out everywhere.
