In retrospect, this wasn't a good year for gaming IMO. The funny thing is, I was really looking forward to a ton of games, but most of them didn't pan out. Oh well, there's always next year.

Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to vote yet. Just started playing Fable 2 and I'm unsure where or if it's going to appear in my list. I may also pick up Fallout 3 or Sonic Unleashed

As a PC and Wii gamer, I was not very please with gaming this year. Not bad, but... just sort of meh... I mean... Left 4 Dead was good and all, but... Eh.

World of Goo was awesome though. A fun breath of fresh air. Similar feeling to Portal in that sense.

If Burnout Paradise doesn't land somewhere in the top 10 then it will be the first time GAF has failed in the GotYs and I'll be forever scarred.

I think people that doubt the game's status on these lists should really give it another whirl. There is always a bias for games that you have more recent experience with. Believe me I had no idea a week ago that my top 10 list would turn out the way it did, with MGS4 on top.

Of course, opinions are opinions, and mine is no better than anyone else's, but I'd still recommend taking a second look at the games that came out earlier in the year. Popping MGS4 back in last week just took me right back to the first day I played it - what an amazing creation.

In all seriousness, it does rock. I meant to specifically list the ABBA version in my vote, but I just went with a the big 'SingStar' umbrella vote instead. SingStar ABBA undoubtedly has the best disc content the series has ever seen, though, and is one of the best gaming experiences of the year.

I want to include it on my list, but I've only played the demo thus far, I haven't picked it up yet. Same goes for Left 4 Dead and Mirror's Edge.

What really baffles me is that you can have a thread about Super Smash Bros. Brawl with a bazillion posts claiming it's the GAME OF THE FOREVER AND BACK AGAIN, but totally disappear from a majority of Best Game of 2008 lists. Just an interesting observation.

I was on board that thread the moment Sonic was announced. I didn't end up buying the game though. I have a feeling many people were just caught up in the thread itself. It was highly entertaining.

It's really close to being #10. As of page 5, it's being slightly edged out by Mirror's Edge. From the looks of it, Mirror's Edge and Burnout will probably both remove SSBB from the top 10.

I'm not too surprised, considering how much stock folks were placing in a properly functioning online component, and that there was instantly a contingent of Smash players who were disappointed in the Melee->Brawl gameplay changes. Though really, coming out of the gate staggering in the much-hyped online component was a major blow to the game's reputation.

For me, my post-Dojo March expectations were all met, if not surpassed. From Brawl ending up being one of my all-time favorite experiences as a gamer, and easily my favorite fighter, to SSE far exceeding my expectations by being one of the best single-player romps of the year (I'd love to see more 2D beat-'em-ups with the Brawl engine/mechanics). It is a homerun title...but as I said, I can see why it's not really tearing up the GAF lists like MGS4 is.

No PS3 games on my list as I haven't got the money to get one yet, but LBP is ever so tempting and it's starting to get quite an interesting library building up and no Wii games because the only thing I brought for it this year was Resident Evil 4 to prepare me for RE5 and it is pretty swish so makes up for not purchasing anything else for it.

I think what happened was the game came out, and then people played it. Everyone I know who was a hardcore Smash player turned on Brawl shortly after playing it for a couple weeks. I'm not sure how many of those people make up the people in that thread, but that's been my experience.

they got sick of tripping and stopped playing it. at least that's what happened with me. tripping in brawl killed smash bros for me.
