I think it's kinda funny that for all the talk of superior western games here, and with the huge presence of western games in this year's list, that Japanese games are always on top. Although to be fair, the western games really made their presence felt only last year (the only non-western game in the top ten was Super Mario Galaxy).

Might just be a vocal minority. I've seen it spring up in sales threads mostly, and other times in discussion of RPGs (where Western vs. Japanese happens somewhat frequently).

My list wouldve been VERY DIFFERENT had I not gotten a DS in Nov and a PS3/HDTV in Dec... I had been strictly a PC gamer for 10 out of the 12 months of 08!

I'm keeping the list limited to games that I own and have spent a good deal of time getting into - and yet I have SO MUCH catching up to do! :lol

It bothers me that I haven't the time to have finished any of the games on my list, but then I feel a lot better when I realize what excellent gaming purchases I've made, experiences had, and experiences yet to be had as I finish these games and beyond.

There's so few great Japanese games these days, that all otakus flock to the best one (i.e. SMG, MGS4). Personally I'm more surprised at the lack of Nintendo voters this year.

Er, 7 of the (current) top 10 are 'Western' games

The only reason 'Japanese' games are on top is that this is NeoGAF and an MGS game released this year, and MGS games are technically Japanese (although MGS4 is clearly heavily influenced by more western gaming).
