GAF-Hop 2011+ |OT3| Look out for OT4 before Detox (dat sh!t cray)

Okay. Just wondering what GAF-Hop thought.

Don't play like one genre cannot have different genres (or categories) within it. Wacka Flocka Flame is rap/hip hop, and so are The Roots, but I wouldn't classify them in the same way.

I try to stay away from subgenres because most of the time they're useless and don't really tell me much of anything about the music.
I just say what other kind of music that I've heard that an artist reminds me of and it paints a much better picture.
You could say Wacka Flocka is Gangsta Rap with a whole lot of energy and club bangers.
While The Roots are a highly introspective/conscious Rap Band.
Just says a lot more than saying The Roots are "underground" or Danny Brown is idk...Techno Hip-Hop or someshit.

Pusha T's verse on So Appalled was the 2nd best verse on MBDTF.

that verse was just nasty.

Yeah, even though Pusha T isn't at the top of his game right now, I know he still got the potential to drop something dope. I just hope he pulls it together for his album.

Speaking of Common, the other day I was marveling at the fact that he's managed to not only remain relevant for all these years, but he's remained one of the nicest rappers out this whole time too. If someone said Common was top 10 dead or alive, I wouldn't be mad.

All three of them were retail albums, Setback was just made free later for all the late/sleepy cheapskates.

Ahhh ok. Setbacks was okay. I disliked Follow Me Hom. I really liked Section.80 though. I have liked all the new Schoolboy Q i have heard, much more than setbacks.

so close

i'll never understand how rappers decide to promote mixtapes. actually i do, i just dont like it.

not directed at Q specifically, but he is guilty of it too.

i liked how Rocky did it personally. he just announced LLA for Halloween and let it speak for itself. if its really that fire then the internet will spread the word.
no nebulous release dates. no twitter whoring/begging (this really annoys the shit out of me). etc

as for the music, Setbacks fell out of rotation in about a week so i hope HNC is better.

Undun is good. I have no clue where it will be on my top 10 list. CunninLynguists - Oneirology is still AOTY for me.
The more I listen to undun, the more I want to put it on my top 10. Not quite there yet, but it's so cohesive, I love it. Flows from start to finish, very few of those albums this year IMO. Oneirology is of the same kind, I just didn't like it as much.

I love concept albums, and undun is giving me that fix.

I love that Sufjan Stevens was solely responsible for my favorite instrumental on the album.

That's where the album loses it for me...I don't know if it's really that cohesive tbh. I like it and it's going to be in my top ten, but it's definitely not #1. This is just a really tough list to put together this year.

I pruned a lot since last night.

I know where your coming from. They kinda described it as the story of a man and all the shit that goes down in one day for him in a non-linear fashion, but it doesn't really work out like that at all, but I feel to a certain extent all the songs feel like they fit together on this one CD. The sound of the thing is pretty consistent throughout, but it *just* doesn't feel like your listening to the same song over and over again. At least, that's what I think your coming from with the cohesiveness.

Make My, One Time and Tip The Scale are my favourite songs off of it.

Undun is pretty damn good. You can really tell it's an album they took their time crafting. I can't say I like some of the singing on the album which sounds generic to me, and a couple of the guest verses are annoying but overall it's solid. I also wish The Roots had another member who matched Questlove's talent and ambition. Yea they have a pretty good guitarist and keyboard guys, but I still would like to see something more daring from them. I miss Hub :(

In terms of specific examples, Dice Raw's verse on One Time struck me as lacking, and really don't like the PORN verse on Stomp. Black Thought's verse is perfect, the production is amazing, everything is going well...then he staggers in with a rambling verse. Bah.

Make My, Lighthouse, Sleep, and I Remember are the stand out tracks to me. Overall it's a damn good album.

Yeah, I thought the singing was especially lackluster at first, but it's kinda grown on me even though it sounds like it has the driest delivery ever. It almost kinda fits as so.. like on One Time. I can definitely see people disliking it though.

The album definitely has it's flaws, but I'm surprised I'm enjoying it as much as I am. How I Got Over really didn't stick well with me, I thought it was grossly overrated on GAF.

I can't get behind that Daily Bread album. Production sucks and the raps aren't anything to faun over either.

You got it wrong Enzo. Undun is the story of a man dying and looking back on the actions that lead him to his undoing.

Gotta give Undun more listens and not listen to it when I'm studying. It isn't moving me like Oneirology, Watch The Throne, or Cole World. Even Dessa - Castor, The Twin connected with me instantly.

So much this. Questlove already seem's like this dude who would devote all the time in the world to crafting this amazing album. Like he'd just live it until he was satisfied. It'd be amazing to see him team up with other like minded individuals.

Sure...it'd take forever to come out, but fuck, it would be amazing. Like his work on the last Al Green album was fucking phenomenal.

Maybe I indeed haven't listened to it enough. Currently finals are fucking me up and I've been listening mostly to something else I'll make an elaborating post on afterwards.

Good luck to all the GAF-Hoppers with exams and finals and all that jazz.

Oh yeah...those....

shit.

Just listen to Sleep and Make My, pay attention to the lyrics, spells it out pretty explicitly.

If you listen to Undun with the concept in mind it makes it that much better of an album. A lot of people say its good background music but that couldn't be farther from the truth. Undun demands that you sit down and pretty much give it your undevoted attention. Theres a to be found, a lot of things that it touches on.
The album is the concept. You're missing the full experience if you're not following the story.

SpeedingUptoStop

will totally Facebook friend you! *giggle* *LOL*
Kool On is a top 10 track of the year for me. The first verse threads the needle perfectly to me. And that loop is fuuuuu

Finally got around to Camp and Undun. Camp is as dull as I expected. About 4 or 5 good songs, but just a whole lot of nothing content wise. He'll probably get 2 or 3 tracks on the big "listenable" playlist.
Undun is...its a roots album. The roots are the handjobs of the rap world. Nothing to complain about, it's an enjoyable experience, but it's never the most exciting part of the evening.

I have had some amazing hand-jobs in my life. In highschool, on bus rides. They definitely were the most exciting part of my day.

Since everyone's doing their end of the year release-catch ups, I have to pimp this again. So damn good.

I don't think I have ever let a hand job be the most exciting part of my day. If she was willing to jerk me off, she was going to get it inside of her too.

No Kings : A little disappointing actually. Some really really great tracks but also some repetitive production. Needs more listens though.
A Sucker For Pumps : I knew I'd love this being a Tiron fan for a while now, I was saving this for the end of the year and I'm not disappointed. Possible top 10 album for me.
Daily Bread : Just as solid as I expected. Probably not a top 10 for me, but top 20 definitely. Tell Me is sick as fuck. Reminds me that we should have a top 20 favorite songs of the year list as well.

Goblin was better on re-listening recently, good angry shit for gym/running and shit.

quietly grateful Com's shit hasn't leaked just yet; hearing Undun & Spiritual State, plus that, all inside of one week woudlve been like when i got an SNES with Mario World, Link to the Past & SFII: World Warrior - i'm never gonna have a lineup so good at one time like that again. that week, i flew too close to the sun~

The violin really makes it even better. Right under Section 80 for me for AOTY.

That is the problem with Goblin for me, its all anger, no substance, all shock. I like angry songs sometimes, but Goblin was just pure anger and nothing more. It really bothered me after about the 4th track and I haven't ever listened to it since. I like Tyler, but I wish he would make songs about other emotions other then anger.

Hopefully Commons leaks next week before the drive home. That would be a nice early Christmas gift.
