Watched it a few days ago. They nailed so many of the characters in look and demeanor, it's crazy. Loved the film.

The only dude that didn't looked on par was MC Ren and the dude that played Dre looked like a mixture of him and Denzel Washington. I wasn't keen on the dude that played Snoop though, but at least he nailed the voice and style down.

Straight Outta Compton was great for sure, it was like the typical Oscar bait biopics we get every year....but with rap music. Making it so much better. Ice Cube's son was uncanny and Eazy E actor did a really good job in the more dramatic scenes, nominate that dude

The snoop guy looked really off but as soon as he started talking he nailed it. was really fun when they pointed out milestones like pac at death row with California love or eazy and bone thugz etc.

Hope it paves the way for more rap movies as well made as this. Notorious was trash

So much this. I was so pissed off at that movie it wasn't funny. You have a rapper that nailed Biggie down to the tee and a script that was all over the damn place. Also, that Lil Cease though...holy shit what a stinker.

On another note, the talk of a sequel got me thinking that the Master P documentary should have been a movie. Can you imagine the amount of content they could put into that movie from P rise to fame, C-Murder proving that it's deeper than rap, Snoop laying low in New Orleans, the NBA deals, etc.

Movie of the ages. The question is who would play Master P?

With Snoop it was like, yeah he doesn't look exactly like him but I thought it was good enough (especially when everyone else is so dead on) but as soon as dude started talking/rapping you begin involuntarily doing the drop it like its hot dance

The voice was more important to me tbh, especially since Snoop has such a distinct voice. It was pretty amazing that first scene when he walked in.

:/ I don't know how to feel about this. Dude been using women like a SP1200 drum session and now he wants to be in the clear?

That Suge though....

When they showed him, dude had me clutching my seat. It was like watching the boogeyman come to life.

Bumping this right now and so far it's a banger. Reminds me of some Pro Era mixed with the Cool Kids.

I mean, on the one hand I kind of, almost believe he sincerely feels bad about it.

On the other, I know he's only publicly apologizing because after thousands of years on this planet the human race has finally started to realize that treating women like shit isn't OK and Apple's not about to have cats on the payroll bringing them bad pub for this in the age of social media.

He certainly wouldn't be saying shit about it right now if SOC didn't come out and bring attention back to how he got down back then.

EDIT: Is Suge still in the movie if he's not in the can right now? I feel like it would take a supreme act of courage to bring him up when he's still out there roaming the streets at large.

Indeed. The cat was out of the bag when Em said shit about it, but no one gave a shit. Now it's understandable when he's playing a huge role with Apple. The apology could be sincere, but he should have made closure a while ago. It is what it is though...the album is dope and the movie is MOTY next to Jurassic World.

oh word im defending the non rapist dudes by coming at your boy now
that's a nifty false dichotomy you've built there fam

damn enzoes looks like i jumped the gun, lemme get back to you when i finish processing all this food for thought right here

There was a book called "Have Gun Will Travel" that covered Death Row records during it's prime. I read some of the excerpts and holy shit if the devil had a record deal...it would be Death Row. I been meaning to cop that book, even though it's out of print.

It's such an insane story.

Death Row's descent is interesting. Makes me wonder how much of Suge's success was luck. He convinced Dre to come with him, Dre found Snoop. Later Daz and Kurupt joined, plus Cold 187um. The rest of the label (Warren G, Nate Dogg, etc) were also brought in by Dre.

Long story short the label imploded after Dre and Snoop left, plus the death of 2pac. Suge wasn't able to find a second wave of artists.

This was probably the last good thing out of that label after Snoop became a No Limit Soldier...

Next up on the BCC retread is Heltah Skeltah's Magnum Force

3BiBPPG.jpg

In typical 90s hip-hop sophomore album fashion, Magnum Force is not the classic Nocturnal was, but just like Cocoa Brovaz' Rude Awakening, Heltah Skeltah's performance is not what brings this album down. In fact, both Ruck and Rock are almost as good as they were on Nocturnal. Simply put, these dudes are still NICE on the mic with great chemistry and a sense of humor that seperates them most rappers, even their BCC counterparts.

The faults on this album lie mainly in the guest apperances and some of the production. For the most part, the beats are dope despite Da Beatminerz being completely absent from the album, and Ruck and Rock compliment them well while adjusting their flows accordingly, but they are not without fault. Chicka Woo being the biggest offender of them all. A terrible choice for a Sean Price solo, and couldn't sound more out of place on this album. It's some shit even shiny suit era Bad Boy would pass up on and is exactly type of "punk smooth bullshit" they poked fun at on their first album. Knowing these 2 and considering the Erykah Badu riff on the (hilarious) skit "Call Tyrone" before it, that was probably the entire point, but the joke went on far too long and it hurts the album for it. Ruck tries his damnest to save it though, I'll give it that much. Black Fonzirelliz kind of falls into the same trap later on into the album but is far more tolerable.

The guest apperances though...well, it's about half and half for me. The usual BCC suspects Starang Wondah (who keeps his foot on Junior Mafia's neck for that beatdown in D&D studios due to the Biggie diss in OGC's No Fear video), Representativz, and Ruste Juxx carry their own weight well enough along with the ever-so-nice-on-guest-spots-but-shakey-on-his-own-shit Method Man, but these newcomers from the newly formed Magnum Force Coalition (the C is interchangeable)? Straight weed carrier status. Doc Holiday in particular damn near ruins songs on some post-1997 Cappadonna shit and has the audacity to show up the most out of all of them. The rest you can find on the final track Gang's All Here along with the BCC for a 9 minute posse cut that's only worth half the rappers on it. Other problems lie in the Kurupt's questionable performace on the rough-at-first-but-it'll-grow-on-you Brownsville II Long Beach, and Pac's weed and HENNESSYYYYYYYYY carriers The Outlaws on MFC Lawz, the latter having a really dope beat that would be better suited as the BCC cut on the album. That said, these tracks continue the trend of west coast influences appearing on BCC solo cuts and really makes me wonder how that One Nation album would've turned out had Pac lived.

All in all though, this is a pretty good album. Despite my gripes with it, Ruck and Rock still do a great job in making this a worthy follow up to Nocturnal. Again, they're just that nice on the mic. 8/10.

One verse in particular I have to point out is Ruck's on Forget Me Knots

"Aiyyo what this about son?" Aiyyo witness a nigga clout son
Trippin with these chickens and sippin on Guinness Stout son
Without them, this nigga who jumped up and asked me
"Are you fuckin my sister man?" when that bitch Butch like Cassidy
HELL NO, quick fast this man caught the elbow
Shells load, he fell froze, buck stuck like velcro
His man yelled, "Yo, ain't no need to fuckin draw gats
We all black" Put the gat down, I left his jaw tapped
I saw that, Duke ain't want no beef in the first place
Just a gerk face nigga tryin to rep his birthplace
The worst case scenario, I leave your ass shot up
Fuck up my rap product and back to crack narcotics
The moral of this story is -- there is no moral God
Just my shit is hard, and if your shit ain't like us
Youse a fraud, motherfucker

This album was likely the very first stages of Sean P as we know him now. Even had his trademark "SEAN P!" on it.

We'll never see another rapper like him.

Black Moon's War Zone is next.

I couldn't get into Magnum Force. It was a pretty boring album with probably three good songs.

You're crazy

Now D.I.R.T.?

I might have to make an exception and go back to that one as well. Don't believe I've listened to it at all since it first came out, I just remember being very underwhelmed.

wutttt

D.I.R.T was the shit. Probably my favorite HS album next to their debut one. Magnum Force feels dated as hell looking back at it. The whole late 90s big willie leather jacket shit just don't sound good in 2015 :/.

But the only tracks that fall in that category are Chicka Woo and Black Fonzirelliz (and maybe Brownsville II Long Beach if we wanna nitpick)

Jay Rock update brehs

The album is now #125 on iTunes; it was #13 a few days ago when the preorders started. #27 on the hip hop chart.

No promo, no Breakfast Club or Hot 97 or Big Boy or anything else. Just some "singles," including the title track with its atrocious hook; that SZA featured track clearly should have been the next single. And when all is said and done we'll get an album with 8 new songs. After four years of waiting. Amazing...

Money Trees Deuce and Gumbo, though. I've always liked Jay Rock voice. His verse on the original Money Trees was one of my VOTYs. Still haven't listened to Follow Me Home. Will check out the new one. The garbage marketing really is unfortunate.
