This Weeknd brehs...

As others have said I'm glad to see him blowing up. I'm glad he's doing it without changing his tone or lyrics: dude is still a rape-y savage I wouldn't even let my cats near. He's the anti-simp in an era of simp music. Props for all that. But overall this album isn't doing it for me. The singles are all good, and range from good (Earned It) to perfect (ICFMF) pop. Those are impressive tracks from a songwriting perspective, which makes the misses on the rest of the album even more perplexing.

Many of the tracks almost sound unfinished or like half ideas. Pretty much after ICFMF there's a massive songwriting drop off. I can appreciate the attempts at retro 80s sounding pop but the hooks just aren't there. The melodies begin to feel forced or simply not impressive. In The Night has the initial MJ feel of ICFMF but the chorus feels like something I've heard a hundred times on an 80s pop station, but done far worse here. These soaring choruses just don't seem to work for him.

I'm not upset about it being safe. I just don't feel the melodies work in many cases. It's not a terrible album, I'll continue to give it a shot. But the second half of the album sounds like a bunch of B-sides for Earned It and ICFMF.

What's crazy is the fact that I'm enjoying the second half and hate the first half. It sounds like dated garbage, but at least dude tries compared to some tracks like Tell Your Friends. I hate that track with the passion for some weird reason.

Loved the yeezus beat tho.

Welp, there it is. Sorry Enzo, you can do the Graduation retrospective in a couple years and try to convince us its not a flabby minor entry in the Kanye Kanon.

I like Rodeo. It's not amazing, but it's got some nice tracks.

Impossible is on repeat atm

As for Late Registration, that's still my favourite Kanye album.

Late Registration the best album out of the College Trilogy

not the best Kanye album though

Don't see how it isn't.

College Dropout was a bit of an unrefined version of it.

Graduation started to show the cracks in his creativity.

808s was a bunch of drunken tears.

Twisted Fantasy did entirely too much.

And Yeezus is damn near the definition of pretentious.

LR was his peak and he'll never reach it again.

College Dropout is most certainly more consistent and more fully realized. Sill the best album in Kanye's discog.

Happy birthday to a great album tho 🗿

If you have this opinion I will forever think you're basic.

You're probably not. But I'll think this.

Maybe Kanye needs to go back to the UK to gain some inspiration back, because what he did on Late Registration was phenomenal. This album along with The Minstrel Show is what 2005 needed during the time of Katrina, B.E.T gate, and etc. Probably one of the last eras for music that had a self conscious theme to it.

I like Yeezus and 808s more (didn't a few years ago, but I feel that way nowadays)

Bumping Trilogy and holy shit the albums were something special. I dig the "alone in the club with caked up coke in nostrils" sound to it, which I don't understand why he went from that to "fucking bitches and getting money" type of songs. A Trilogy caliber album would still sell since it's an adult version of "fucking bitches and getting money" type of songs.

Wait, explain this more. Because if you're saying there wasn't self conscious music post LR. You're wrong.

I mean as far as a movement was concern. Sure there's self conscious music out nowadays, but during the 2002-2005 period it was insane. Even Diddy was down with the movement.
