Bumped 90059 once again before I went to my doctors appointment. It still bugs me that the SZA track was short :(...that track alone would have moved units.

I only listened to 90059 while I was at the gym so I prolly didn't give the attention that RP9's AOTY deserves

and all in all it's okay. got a nice downtempo vibe to it all but it's pretty forgettable overall. jay rock just doesn't have charisma on the mic. best you could call him is a competent MC. like he's not being actively horrible but not particularly great either. there's like two tracks on here I think might be worth keeping, I'll find them when I browse through the album at home. but I remember enjoying a couple.

Q did great on Vice City. It's such a bizarre flow that ab soul just tripped over and fell flat on his face. Q made it the most palatable forreal, Kendrick did good on it as well. Jay Rock..once again he did fine but you could skip his verse tbh. Ron Howard ass muthafucka.

btw the title track...dear god I forgot how garbage that was. I thought cookie monster was spitting bars for a second.

That was coincidental... I came in here to ask you guys for some song recommendations. I haven't listened to hip-hop for about 5 years since I've been into the EDM/dubstep/trap scene. The other day I heard Trap Queen for the first time and I was hooked. Started looking around and I'm really digging this "new" dirty south sound ala Fetty Wap (from NJ? still sounds like DS to me), Young Thug, Rich Homie Quan, Tyga, etc.

Faves right now include Trap Queen, Lifestyle, 679, Some Type of Way, Faded (old I know). What else am I missing here?

Was gonna say Future, though he's not always as melodic as like a Young Thug or Fetty. Worth a shot though.

Awesome thanks! What are your favorite Future songs? Looking more for good songs than specific artists. In my experience most artists make a handful of good songs and a lot of garbage.

oh wow a potential member of future-hive? check out his latest album DS2 in stores now. and also his 3-peat run of great mixtapes beast mode, monster and 56 nights.

for singles before that: turn on the lights, move that dope (with pharell)

Thanks!

Not feeling those... as you said, not particularly melodic. I like my hooks. I'll check out a few more Future tracks, maybe I'll hit something I like.
Some peeps in here will disagree with me, but have you heard the Drake tape from earlier this year? Some great hooks and melodies on there.

Though you may have already heard it.

edit: those also may be slower than what you're lookin' for.

Ok so Move that Dope is pretty sick. Turn on the Lights.. meh. I'm weird.

Do you like Ace Hood - Bugatti (feat. Rick Ross & Future)? Killer hook.

I just realized that Future came so far. I think the first I ever heard of him was on the Rich Forever tape by Ross? I almost completely discarded him as an underwater T-Pain.

Hell nah. Maybe similar to Follow Me Home, but it's much worse than those others imo.

I wasn't talking about deep or conscious music specifically, but was just using it as an example. What I'm really talking about is recognizing the different utilities of various albums. Don't front like you've heard many pedantic albums that carry the same sort of accessible grooves as say a Drake album. I love Drake, but let's be real, his albums aren't albums in the same sense that Kendrick's albums are albums. The subgenre definitely has an affect on the tone of the album, and albums with strong concepts are more likely to employ moments of abrasion or utilize somewhat off-kilter styles of music to enhance a story or theme. Kendrick is yet to make an album that's just a collection of radio songs.

You're right on this, and I agree. Albums that try to stimulate or delve deeper than melodies alone will generally be more off kilter and in search of sounds and cadences that support that album's focus. BUT I also don't want to make it seem like I'm talking about Drake grooves vs. thought provoking projects. Just recently we can use Night's Gambit/Yen Lo or Lese Majesty as examples; three albums I love because of the particular extremes they touch sonically. None of them are exactly catchy in the same way that Future or Young Thug are, or even underground stuff like The Doppelgangaz (3 acts that have been getting major play from me this year), but the aesthetics of those albums lend them a replay value, for me, that's comparable to actively catchy and melodic hip-hop. That's why I emphasized "sounds and flows that catch my ear" instead of "catchy melodies." It's not about whip music or hooks, just the vibe of the album and whether or not it makes me want to come back to it again and again. That's why replay value is always a factor when I judge an album on a personal level.

Everyone always uses Schindler's List, but y'know what, lots of Bergman movies are heavy and depressing and I'll watch them whenever. Ikuru is an emotional rollercoaster and I can't wait for the Criterion to come out. Replay value isn't exactly indicative of the quality or impact of something, but it does matter when we're dealing with personal preference. Sometimes you can't even put into words why something works, it just does.

TPAB still top 5 of 2015 btw, so I'm not taking anything away from that album.

Great post, nothing to rebut at all, and I'm always impressed by your movie taste... BTW, Ikiru might be my favorite now as well, used to be Yojimbo. Next time I'll use Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl as an example to be less trite.
