First Impressions - Jay Rock's 90059
There's something inherent about Jay Rock's writing style that can dull a verse with a good flow (Gumbo) or beat. And how do you come with not only an awful flow on your own verse for Easy Bake, but subsequently have an awful back and forth with Kendrick to follow it up? You have the first Black Hippy cut in how long and it's awful all around?
Dude epitomizes the complaints people have for Game's style jacking without having any sort of personality or exceptional songs/verses or general execution that would otherwise give you a pass for any artist doing a song in the style of another artist.
Jay Rock just.. exists, and the album is uneventful as a result. There's no real emotional direction or album flow to get swept up in, and the only times I perked my ears was the SZA and Busta features (Busta verse is good, just trails off in the middle unnecessarily). Underneath this, there might be a good foundation for an album with these beats (the album IMO has a decent blend of beats but they are ultimately wasted) and even some of the songwriting, but I don't think it's in Jay Rock's scope to unearth it from how he attacks these songs.
I genuinely don't want to be harsh on the project because even if I don't like it myself I can understand why someone else might like it (the style of production might hit a certain nostalgic spot for some) but reflecting back, there's pretty much no highs or standout anything on this album. Not necessarily bad, but it's immediately on to the next one so it may as well be.

Vice City is such an awful track, holy crap. How do you get two Kendrick features to help prop up your album and they're both some of the worst things he's done in recent memory.
TDE can definitely hold the L for this. Don't think there is a single piece of the 90059 puzzle that has worked out. Promo has been bad too because Jay Rock has like nothing to say about his own art or otherwise.

Deleted 90059 except for Money Trees Deuce, Gumbo, I wish he had put Parental Advisory on the album.
The rest of the album is just kinda there. Idk, it's forgettable, at best.

Man I really hate the flow they used on the song such a waste of a great beat.
Ok, what? I went and checked out Vice City after everyone was talking about how "awful" it was and y'all need to lower your expectations, damn... this is considered bad hip hop these days? What are you guys reasonably expecting? The track is fine and you guys are out here deleting the song off itunes like it's a disease.
Same thing with Fetty. I remember when everyone was on his dick, and then he releases a tracklist for his album that is considered "too long" and now it's gonna be trash? Seriously? Come on. I'm not expecting anything special, but it will probably be a fun record with great hooks. Stop being so cynical gafhop.

ab soul the only one who stumbles over vice city. jay rock's non charisma everyman ass rapper can go too but he's not bad.
i like the track, kendrick and q did good. it's a bizarre flow but they made it work.

Ke drick and Q are the only one to bring the track up, if it was a collaboration between just those two it would have been better.

I'm all for experimentation but that flow ain't working at all for me on that beat.

Yeah most definitely, but it's pretty swag.
Pretty much and you can tell which one didn't feel comfortable with the flow.

I like Kendrick's and Q's verses as well as the beat on Vice City.
It's not memorable yet it's one of the better TDE tapes...Yeah, okay.
I would say only Kendrick tapes and Cilvia demo is clearly ahead of it. For me 90059 rubbing shoulders in the Habits & Contradictions/Control System tier. That would make it top half.
And you're a hip hop encyclopedia, Des. You remember cuts a nigga recorded in his bathroom right before he caught the bus to work. I don't go in like that, so "memorable" to me is classic quality or close to it. The only album I can name every track on that came out this year is TPAB.

Man I think you should re-listen to Habits & Contradictions forreal. It's a damn good album, don't listen to Esch.
