Premo is like a lot of old school producers: just sounding uncreative and repetitive while recycling the same type of samples. Plus his shit doesn't really knock anymore, outside of a few tracks. The drums are weaker, the chops aren't interesting, etc.
Pete Rock, RZA...all these dudes suffer from the same problem. Meanwhile there are guys like Q-Tip who are still making consistently dope beats because they never separated themselves from modern shit, surrounded themselves with creative people, etc. I was listening to Q-Tip's Apple radio show a couple weeks ago and he was playing Future, geeking out over how much he likes the records.

On the nose. These old school producers need to understand that progression=key. Nobody bumping boom bap like that in 2015 unless it's on a different level (the Pro Era dudes, 9th wonder, etc). I love prems work but if I hear the same stretched brass loop one more time...I'm going to fucking scream. At least Q Tip switches his sound up as time progress.

Preem started to fall off once he transitioned to new hardware, that's why his drums be sounding weaker, because he keeps using those stock drum sounds. It doesn't help that most of his chops now are so uninspiring, just random loops. But he can still bring it, from time to time.

Great point, that's what it must be drum wise. Shit sounds so fake and weak. It's even more baffling when you consider that every great producer has a collection of drum sounds that they've mined over the years/decades. I'm sure Premo has a bunch of dope drums..so why use this weak shit. Maybe he feels like it doesn't matter - outside of the track he did for Dre on Compton it seems like only Euro rappers are buying his beats. Plus some underground (mainly white) rappers here in the US.
RZA man =[ dude definitely moved into some weird territory.
Feel like it started with 8 Diagrams. Though he had some really nice ones on Cuban Linx 2 (Black Mozart & New Wu).

yeah, for me it's hard to say exactly when but it was a steady decline...I didn't catch it on the W as much, just felt he'd put his best work into Forever at that point. Iron Flag it was definitely noticeable, but by 8 Diagrams there was literally no denying it.

Nah, Game was always best out the gate and 50 was his only "competition" musically and also with respect to finding ways to keep himself relevant.
50 got bitter and felt alienated in more ways than one. Also 50's label woes hit him later than earlier like Game, and Game has been way more versatile since.

Catching up with the new music:
Slime Season- Pretty damn good. I gotta keep it 100, I wasn't feelin that Barter 6 shit at all. I don't know if that was when I was still in that phase where I didn't fuck with Thugga because him taking Wayne's style and runnin with it rubbed me the wrong way or if I didn't feel like it lived up to the hype, but I couldn't get down with that CD. But everything since then has been fire. This may be the best project I've heard from him.
Da Nic- Too damn short and the best track is still basically Young Thug ft. T.I. It's cool tho
Back To The Bando- Not quite done with it, but I'm liking what I've heard so far. It feels a lot like their first tape which I like. Stretching themselves on the faux artistic tip was probably what brought YRN down. When they stay in their lane like on this tape, they're still making good music.
I'll finish Migos, and then crack open that Mac Miller and Jay Rock over the weekend probably.
