man it hurts to say 2 Chainz is better than anyone at anything. Man I'd go with all three of the Migos crew over Future's Meryl Streep looking ass.

I still don't really quite get the Future thing, although I do like some Future songs. I love the first track on DS2 (Thought It Was A Drought) because that beat is absurd but really, if the album was an instrumental, very little of value would be lost. I feel the same way about Future generally. You could replace Future with a nondescript Soundcloud struggler and a solid half of his songs would not suffer in the slightest.

I feel compelled to ask if anyone actually likes Future as an MC. The production and beats are often (usually, to be honest, Metro killing it lately) great, but Future himself? Does anyone actually like his peculiar barked mumble thing? He's not exactly terrible, but at his highest he hits 'kinda cool', and spends most of his time at 'below average'. This man has produced literally hours of monotonous mumbling. He doesn't say anything interesting - ok sure, he's not that kind of rapper. But his flows aren't catchy or fun either! I think the only rhythm I've liked is on 'Fuck Up Some Commas', which is admittedly a really fun track. But even in that song, what he's saying is so banal it detracts from the song. He has seemingly negative charisma. Is there a worse semi-popular MC right now?

Just saying; rip out the beat on a Future track and what's left is debris.

for real - 2chainz was charismatic but most of what i heard, he struck me as interchangeable - could be wrong here, but the way his lane got scooped up makes me inclined to think that way. also see migos or rae sturmwind.

thugger for instance isn't my thing but his style/flows/etc stand out, kinda explains his current/relative longevity in a highly competitive/disposable (in terms of shelf life/etc) lane

the "turn on the lights" future of a few years ago? i can totally see what see5harp is saying. the christina hendrix or whatever form that put out DS2 this year? not so much

Any time Drake comes out with a new project people seemingly lose their minds lol and even Future in the crosshairs now

To be honest I was excited to hear some new Drake shit. I like most of his verses and choruses on this album. I just do not get the appeal of Future at all. He is a better rapper than Young Thug. I guess that's something. I get the appeal of someone like Young Thug. though. On record and in terms of style, he is inimitable. Seems like Future could be any other random dude rapping over auto tune and no one would even notice. Ciara won.

EDIT: so glad others basically said the same thing before I hit post. Future just seems like some dude to me.

Actually I don't reaaally see a comparison between Future and Young Thug. Young Thug is crazy diverse and creative with his flow, and usually really catchy. Whether you like him or not, he's a unique and distinctive creature. But totally yes on the Future 'some dude' thing.

I didn't say they were anything alike (besides the whole rap over auto tune thing). Future is just a better technical rapper than him. But yea, the issue mainly for me is not that he just doesn't rap about anything besides the standard drugs, women, money, club. It's that nothing he says is remotely fun or joyful. It's not even silly in the stupidest possible way like Migos "Street Nigga Sacrifice." I do agree with Irish that he DS2 was a step up. For me it was just the overall sound and production though.

The appeal with future is definitely the production, how silly some of the shit he says is, E.g. I just fucked your bitch in some gucci flip flops, his hooks, and the music in general is really hype. I actually like his voice too

The mumbling/slurring is all part of his codeine/lean image.

That's fair. Future isn't for everyone (and I'm much more of a Drake fan than a Future one also) but I dunno, I enjoy Fewtch personally. He's come into his own over the past year or so and I just love the dark vibe on a lot of his verses. Also don't mind his auto tune, it's catchy.

edit: Eos is right about part of his appeal being random entertaining lines lol. I was just listening to Change Locations and the first thing Future says on the track is "60 naked bitches, no exaggeration" :lol

Agreed.

Kinda weird that we require Future to self-destruct to enjoy him though, lol

a lot of fans have symbiotic relationships with these artists. like how some people want their favorite rock bands to go back on drugs to find their best sound again (same goes with some rappers)

or how ye should divorce the kardashians and free himself from that vapid family and make 808s 2: yeezy's revenge etc. he would be less happier but his music would be better

some of the best art derives from pain and i am a selfish man.

Simplest reason why people like future, the very thing people critique about him doesn't bother most other people. Not lyrical? Don't care they got other rappers for that. Monotone voice? Fits his subject matter and production most of the time.

Its not all that hard to understand really.

This is basically what I think, too, BUT: I'm warming up to DS2. Production is ridiculous. Future always was too monotonous for my taste, too, but I also understand that this is kind of the aesthetics he's going for. He sounds way more "lively" on WATTBA though, imo. More coherent, a bit more melodic. Not bad.

Can't believe I missed a Grimm discussion. Dude easily has the craziest life of any living rapper.

I copped American Hunger as soon as it dropped. 60 fucking tracks. One that really stood out was this A Mother's Heart, rough as hell. Can't even find it on youtube

Damn, I remember bumping Grimm back when I was 14 or so. I can't remember anything about their beef, though. Could somebody summarize it quickly for your boy?

Grimm felt disrespected because Doom didn't give him any funds for Operation Doomsday (which Grimm was the huge reason to why the album existed). Also, Doom was getting pretty big headed during the time when he was getting all of this shine (Adult Swim, Dangermouse, etc). Doom said some slick shit on the Dangermouse album calling the M.I.C= Midgets into Crunk.

So Grimm dropped the "Book of Daniel" diss track against Doom. Some folks say it was to promote American Hunger, but it's a little bit of everything. How you going to bite the hand that fed you?

Thanks, breh! That's effed up, yeah.

Drake makes Future sound like Simple Jack on some of these songs.

Lol'd in real life.

But yeah I mean Future isn't the greatest at anything and I'm not even a fan tbh but some of his songs have really nice melodies and he can just float on a beat with his lyrics even though 99% of the time it is incoherent mumblings but end up being just right for a song.

I think I listen Young Thug and Future the same way I listen to Animal Collective. I'm not trying to understand it, I'm not in love with the most of their work but a few of their songs have a nice combination of sounds that work really well.

That's the right way to listen to them, I mean, even the Rap Genius guys have a hard time to put their lyrics together and give a meaning to them. The dudes that listen to Future/Thugga/Keef for their lyrics are probably them guys that go to MC Donalds for some good salad or cop that Playboy for them interviews.

Thats a good analogy right there

I understand most of what future says, and am pretty good at deciphering thugga on the first listen. I do think there is some merit to their kind of lyricism, but not really as rappers. It's more akin to songwriting for singing songs. They do have cadence and melodies that are on point, and finding good words to make up the content takes some skill, so I do appreciate that future manages to say so much iconic stuff for example. But yeah..."lyricism"...you're right that they're probably not the best place to look for something enlightening. It's more like watching scarface than drugs, Inc.

I listen to Future and Thugger for the lyrics...

I got DS2, will listen tonight and review. The random Future songs I've heard this year outside of Commas are kinda whatever. With Young Thug you get some undeniable melodies that just sound good. Whereas Future kinda drones over beats until he gets back to the chorus.
