October is within a few days, it’s ironic that this album that I am about to review came out around the same time…well within a week and some change. On October 8th 1996, No Limit released a debut album from a hip hop duo known as Kane and Abel entitled “7 Sins”. Before there was “Clipse”, there were these twin brothers out of New Orleans that were formerly known as Double Vision. No Limit was known for gangsta rap with a basic rhyme schemes ala soldier, doulja (whatever the hell that means), rollers, and holdups. You get the picture. Yet, they weren’t known for their lyrical ability around that time and even to this very day (such a shame). However, P wouldn’t back down from change, as he introduced lyrical powerhouses like Mia X and this brotherly duo.
Now back to the album, it’s pretty good….no damn good. It’s like a good rendition of an east coast hip hop album with some southern flavor. The album starts off with the smash hit “Gangstafied” which became an underground success in 96. You listen to the track and go…”meh..I heard it all before”. You are wrong because this album just pulls a fast one over listeners with banging tracks like “This is the Life”, “Black Jesus”, “Basement Session”, “That’s how it’s goin’ Happen 2 U’, and my personal favorite “God & Gunz” featuring the best rapper out of the No Limit camp bar none “Mac”. Seriously, this album is glorious to the point even the beats were losing their shit (This is the Life). 7 Sins is an example of Quality>>>>Quantity that Master P should have thought about doing, rather than pushing compilation albums as solo releases. It’s cheating in a way, but still a genius move as a CEO of a record company.
Bottom line, go out and check this album out. You won’t regret it and I’m going to put the links of the top songs at the bottom of this review for reference. This is an example of hidden gems that No Limit put out, but folks want to follow the whole “No Limit is garbage” bandwagon rather than seeing their good efforts for themselves. As a music fan, this album is worth every penny and show diversity in styles within No Limit, rather than “My brother was pushing up daisies/momma take care of your baby”. Sorry P
