Yeah but there Skelethon review was fantastic.
http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/16814-skelethon/

Tho I don't see how a 8.2 don't get you Best New Music.
I'm 50/50 with the rhymesayers stuff usually- but I love this album. The wordplay is so dense that it takes multiple listens to just figure out any sort of overall narrative- but it's cool because the words he chooses individually are evocative enough to just make it enjoyable to sit back and take in the mood of the album.

Listening to it, halfway through right now. It's so good, don't think I'll be spinning that new Nas for a while. When Aes is at his best his lyrics work like you said, and so few people can actually pull that off.

People can do abstract lyrics meant to conjure imagery or evoke emotion or be more direct and have a clear message to convey, both can be great. Aes obfuscates his clear messages with dense poetic abstraction, shit hits hard. It's dense though, these aren't interspersed punchline similes, practically every line is a metaphor to decipher.

But like you said, it works on both levels so you can take it however you want and isn't grating. Also the production is fire.

Fyrestarter, Crows pt.1 and Leisureforce are gonna get some heavy spins.

Edit: Miss those jazzy blockhead beats tho, tbh

Pitchfork keeping it real.

Honestly, I don't know why people hate Pitchfork, is it mainly because of their reviews? I mainly use them because I know of no other blogs that bring attention to lesser known artist since I have no clue where to find such thing(HiRes has kind of replaced them).
Fun fact: HRD used to intern at Pitchfork.

Their reviews suck ass, are usually heavily biased, use varying criteria from album to album to judge for an objective score they place alongside a review, and some of their rationales are WTF-worthy.

wasnt it Pitchfork that gave Untitled/Nigger a 3.8?
Album was aggressively mediocre, but it aint Nastradamus bad.
smh, but I have to laugh at that.

"Whispers in the Dark" - Supreme Cuts

* An instro tape along the lines of Clams Casino, or even, at times, Burial: Dark, 'reverbial', grooves with the pitch-played vox slices to boot. It's almost, dare I say, a bit generic, with the floodgates having been opened on this sound lately, but it's solid, still.

My fav: "(Youngester Gone Off That) Sherm"

Pitchfork is perhaps fairly dissed a lot of the time but I think really they're just like most other websites or publications with multiple writers in that you're going to find some of the writers and the reviews that they do good, whereas others you may hate. For example Jeff Weiss wrote the review for Aesop Rock's Skelethon and I know from following his writing at his personal blog Passion Of The Weiss and some of his stuff at LA Weekly, that he is a writer whose stuff I enjoy and so I feel like his opinion carries a bit more weight for me personally. Others on the Pitchfork staff like say Ian Cohen I jus think are fucknuggets and so I adjust my expectations accordingly. Anyway some songs...

Tree - Stomp ft. SL Jones
LEP Bogus Boys - Don't Happen That Often
Jackie Chain - Johnny Depp

fuck reviews! how about that, like your own shit. why you gotta have someone tell you what to like?
Pretty much my mentality in general for media. Often times a general consensus/metacritic is useful for a basic gauge, but I find those are even less useful for music in particular. Ain't nothing like building your own taste.

won me 10€ for betting on frank ocean getting 9.4-9.6
pretty predictable fellas. the thing is, I think a lot of non-music stuff weighs on p4k reviews like his outing, the fact he released a week before. his whole swag.

nonetheless i wont hate on the album. its a pleasure from beginning to end. i especially dig the subtle electronica stuff in monk and super rich kids. the synth after ears verse gives me goosebumps.

@reviews
i like reading them. make me agree, make me laugh.. i have my opinions and seldom change them through reviews. but im also one of the few guys that thinks there IS "bad" music that i like, or lets say if id review childish gambino i wouldve lots to complain and give it something rather low (not p4k low, mind you) but i still dig his music a lot!

I don't get scoring music on a 100 point scale. Do Pitchfork really think they are that good at scoring music?

Life is good seems pretty boring after my first listen. Lyrics aren't anything on the level of illmatic/iww, actually I think they are pretty bad, and the beats are decent - though pretty standard.
Nas should go back to 40 minute album structure imo; I really can't listen to him for an hour.

I have no idea if that semicolon is used right

anything above 5 "stars" on anything is pointless imo.

So, since PD called Life is Good the best Grownman album, what is everyone's else favorite? I can't really think of any album to label that besides Phonte's album that came out last year

Atmosphere's entire discography. Siddx will agree with me.

hey everyone. Just felt like introducing myself.

I don't listen to much rap, but I do really enjoy Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Azealia Banks. Just got nostalgia ULTRA some days ago, and I really like it. Gonna listen to channel orange soon as well.

Azealia's mixtape Fantasea was just released yesterday, and I fucking love it. Really easy to listen to and get hooked in. What do you guys think of it?

I like you and your avatar so I'm gonna give you some advice for dealing with GAF-Hop. Don't listen to anyone's opinion in here starting after this post and keep your head down.

Big KRIT is officially a dead rapper I guess. Posted free tickets on Facebook and can't even get a taker. smh.

I'd roll, but my Caddy doesn't have insurance or real license plates, and the Jeezy concert I went to in Cincy literally had a police checkpoint at every corner after the show. You couldn't leave the show, period, without going through one. Good thing oxycodone doesn't show up on a breathalizer. lol. I was so high I had to stop before I got on the highway to throw up. No drink though, so I skated right through the checkpoint. But I had insurance and legit tags then.

Child support and lawyer fees. Lemme tell yall young bucks something right now, get ya balls snipped. If you find a chick that's really worth seeding up, you can have it undun.

I've never listened to any Nas outside of Illmatic and now Life is Good (Distant relatives too). I'm hearing a lot of good things about It Was Written... you guys think we could do that for the next edition of Gaf-Hop Listens?

anyone that liked LIG should check out Trust. It's got that mafiosa IWW vibe but with modern production. that chorus goes so well with the beat

dunno why the fuck Nas decided to leave this off the album and not Reach Out or SOS.

Nas album is really good stuff. Based on 2 listens, I'd put it behind God's Son, Illmatic, It Was Written, Distant Relatives and tied with Hip Hop is Dead.

So far KRIT has my favorite album of the year.

The Yelawolf x KRIT album is gonna be insane.

New Aesop shits all over Life is Good. Production is ridiculous, so far above all these other producers right now. Aesop went all out for this one. The only "stream of consciousness" rapper I can stand and he didn't disappoint.

edit: that fucking pitchfork review is ridiculous. You are writing a review, not a fucking paper for your woman's studies class you hipster fuck. Amazing how much unnecessary bullshit someone can stuff into a single sentence.

Aesop has one of the most solid discographies, I've been hearing good things about Skelethon, waiting on that physical though.

You may want to spend more than 2 minutes in this thread before making dumbfuck statements. Perhaps then you'd realize this thread is full of foul mouthed fucks. If that kind of language gives you little bitch fits you may want to leave because you are going to hear a whole fucking lot of it.
