Allow me to repeat myself and hopefully a Lupe dick ri fan can answer me this time because I'm still baffled:

Ready To Die = classic
Liquid Swords = classic
The Cool = not a classic

Would people here seriously call The Cool a classic?
It's not on the level of the other two in any way whatsoever.
So what does that make those? Classic-ier?
Are they A* classics whilst The Cool is a B+ classic?
In what definition of classic does The Cool share space with 36 Chambers, The Chronic, Straight Outta Compton, etc?
I struggle to see the definitions people are upholding when you can claim The Cool as a classic record of the hip-hop genre, I really do.

Anybody can be a fool and say this, that and whatever is a classic 'because I say so' but that's not really how it works.
If The Cool is an amazing masterwork which, as a classic, should be revered for the rest of time, WHY IS THIS?

For what it's worth this is what I posted about The Cool recently:

I'm a fan of both of Lupe's real albums and think The Cool is very good but it's no classic.
I don't even know the definition of classic anymore whilst in here.
The Cool, as a concept album is a terrible failure with a boring narrative filled with filler and an unsatisfying conclusion. As a standard album it's meandering, overlong and hugely unfocused.
F&L might possibly be a classic. 7 years old already and it holds up extremely well and still sounds as good today as when it was released.
The Cool was and always will be a good to very good album whilst also being an overambitious failure.

i admittedly have a hard time with "classics" discussion, cause there's albums id give 5 mics personally but prolly woudln't put in that set. there's also shit you can kinda tell won't age well, so it might be best to give a few years and return to.

then again, it's the same kinda thing i get with reviews on the gaming side: i don't really need perfection. i think a piece is the sum of its parts, so while there are good albums i can bump every track from, there's great ones i gotta skip a couple on. the latter is gonna stay with me longer.

I wish yall could hear Jeezy do Juicy. He actually rapped every word and didn't 'pass the mic to the crowd' once. You can tell he really tried to rip it and did.

It was all a dream /JeezyVoice

meant to say, i wish i could hear this too.

I think there are two different versions of a "classic" album.

The first is the version that is meant for the albums that are must listen to, universally acclaimed/praised and/or albums that changed the game. (Your ATLiens, E.1999 Eternal, Illmatic, 36 Chambers go here.)

The only difference for the second version is the lack of being universally acclaimed/praised. An album might be 5 mics to someone and at the same time be 3 mics to someone else.

For me The Cool is a 5 mic album and should be considered a classic, because it IS an amazing album, but I know it won't.

So like Man on the Moon.

I have to love The Cool if only for Dumb It Down. That's one of my favorite tracks ever. I just love the vibe of that song.

oh for sure, like how i say we try to establish a top 10 MC's but everyone's got their own votes that many wouldn't agree with.
like, everything about Blackout! screams classic to me - its gotta be past 10 years old, but still bumps for parties, gym shit etc like it's brand new for me.

i think we asked this, but - what 2011 albums do ya'll think are/will be considered classics?

Nothing. I don't call albums classic as easily as certain people here do!

For me though, a classic is an album that I just had on instant repeat for months. While it might not vibe with other people, I still think of it as my classic.

Nothing from this year so far will be thought of as being a classic.

I think the trouble is people have difficulty discerning between an album which is a classic and an album which they love. The two almost have to be mutually exclusive to a certain point, otherwise there would be classics dropping every single year which is certainly not the case.
There are albums I love and have listened to literally 100+ times, but they don't automatically classify as classics because I say so, they are simply albums I love.
I believe a classic to be, at its base level, something which innovates, influences and inspires change. Something which pushes the boundaries of its genre or attains an extremely high level of artistry.
Everything else are simply good or perhaps near great albums but the likelihood is they will not hold-up over time.
Straight Outta Compton is almost 25 years old and still sounds amazing.
Will The Cool when it's 25 years old? Will anything that dropped last year?
Maybe I sound pessimistic but I'm extremely doubtful they will.

In our age, unfortunately, classics are thin on the ground and the reasoning that 'an album I don't skip a track on is a classic' is laughable.

Maybe. I think it will depend on what Kendrick does next.

The last classic album made was My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. I know a lot of people hate it, but I don't doubt it will be considered a benchmark in 10 years.

The Cool is a 6/10 album. I can't believe this is even a serious discussion.

For comparison F&L would be like an 8.5 and Lasers would be a 1.

The Cool would be a classic if it had cut about 5 or 6 songs. The best songs in that album are amazing. For that reason, I tend to agree that Food and Liquor is a better album (and they're both near classics).

Also, ATTN Toku and Shinobi- you guys should enter this production contest:
http://www.2dopeboyz.com/2012/03/10/a-2dope-contest-rashad-x-confidence-the-city-remix-contest/

It wants a boom bap remix of the acapella, and you guys are fucking sick at that kind of beatmaking. Im gonna give it a go too, but you guys are leagues ahead of me when it comes to purely sample based beats. Shit, maybe even use one of the heaters from 2pretty4porno.

I was debating trying my hand at this, and thought in the meantime I'd see if I had any beats laying around that fit. After running through a few dozen I thought this one clicked really well. It's not perfect but I thought it turned out way better than I expected.

Wait, why did Tguy get banned?

And for me, not saying generally accepted but rather me personally, Return of 4eva, Oneirology and Section.80 are all three classics. WTT i played a ton, but it's a lot harder to go back to because the songs are so hit and miss.

For real.

Also, guys, I was listening to some tracks off of Paid in Full this morning and it hit me, what's Eric B. up to right now? Dude dropped off of the radar.

I think he is involved in the music industry behind the scenes doing some consulting or some shit. There was an interview can't remember where but he basically said he if he could go back in time he wouldn't have even done the stuff with Rakim and wished he was just a music exec working behind the scenes. Personally with him being away for so long and some of his comments I don't think he was ever into making beats or records, I just don't know how you could stay away from it for so long. I wouldn't be surprised if Marley Marl did a lot of the Eric B and Rakim stuff.

section.80. Nothing else.

Even this album is pretty overrated. When it first came out I thought it was fucking dope. And as usual on blogs n shit when an albums only been out for 1 day ppl already call it a classic. A classic is only an album which stands the test of time. And looking back on section.80 the stupid stuff k.dot does with his voice kinda annoys me.

and those looking for that Wu Tang snapback, its done by a clothing company called RockSmith. They did a collab with Wu Tang. Some really dope tees and stuff but pretty hard to find now. Just google rocksmith wu tang and see what you can find. Some stuff here:

What the fuck @ the last 3 pages or so.

This is what happens when there is a deficiency of music coming out. What are the next few big releases?

It's amazing how many classic records in different genres this man produced. Don't be fooled by the countdown gimmick, this is a really well written article.

I've always wanted to check out some of Rubin's non-rap produced tracks, but I never really knew where to start haha. Thanks for the link, it was a good read!

I don't think this week has been too bad. It did give us new Rittz, K.R.I.T. Gunplay and G Mane after all. hiphopdx has an upcoming albums list thing here. Action Bronson & Party Supplies are dropping a tape tomorrow and also that DX list doesn't mention it but E-40 is dropping 3 albums called Block Brochure on the 26th of March I think.
