let's just be specific then; entries to the AOTY should be only rap-centric tapes. 'Hip-hop' as the the operative genre is too ambiguous. Artists like The Weekend, though R&B-centric, easily fall under that umbrella too.

It really doesn't.

Hip-Hop and R&B are pretty distinct. I think the all-inclusive term your thinking of is "urban," and even still that has all kinds of dumb connotations and implications with it.

I wouldn't consider the Weeknd a part of Hip Hop. Frank maybe.

Regardless, if I counted votes, I would remove both from contention. Ultimately, it's up to the person who decides to tally the shit.

Not even getting into that urban spiel, cause that's hardly it. The production is multipurpose. The difference used to be a bit wider, but with artists like the Weekend (especially) frank less so, the only real differentiating factor is vox, IMO.

Just saying to include only Rap entries clears up all confusion.

I think instrumental tapes are fine as long as they're original and not collections like Clams' tapes are.

Alright, only me and Miri thought to include The Weeknd and Frank Ocean so the consensus is no, they will not count in AOTY voting.

Russian Roulette counts, that's not a beat tape, wtf?

but nah, straight up instrumentals (like that Clams Casino that came out) tapes do not count. It's just a compilation of beats.

A lot of people rate channel.ORANGE very highly tho, including myself. But whatever, not trying to cause an uproar with it. Just easier to not include. Death Grips won't matter, shit barely got recognized in here.

It has the potential to lead to that 'well frank is in so' prob somebody else mentioned a few posts back. It didn't last year, but clarifying clarifies. still.

I simply don't see how any of the instrumentals, vocal styles, and aesthetic in any of these nouveau R&B acts are something you would listen to and be like "yo you hear that new rapper the Weeknd"? Shits honestly boggling my mind. Maybe some of the instrumentals, but thats just a byproduct of hip hop employing a greater diversity of shit to rap over.

Just see it as Hip-Hop =/ Rap, but rap = hip-hop, which is what I think I'm doing here. It's the way I've tagged all my tags, lol. Nobody's saying that the weeknd is a rapper.

So what's the rule? "No Frank Ocean or Weekend?" or "Nothing but music with rappers rappin". I'm guessing if Kanye released 808s 2 it wouldn't be allowed then.

Again, like I said, Frank Ocean and Weeknd had their major label debuts this year and had their rise in popularity to the mainstream tenfold.
