Irish, I would mention Swimming Pools by Kendrick but the general radio listeners don't get the actual meaning for it. Kinda funny (and sad) that it has to be layed out on a silver platter for people to think about it.

And since GAF-Hop is all about < & >, Lupe >>> Ab-Soul.

^perfect example of how we're not quite there yet CRS, but i guess you (ace and older camp) could argue we never were, even in the day it was beat > lyricism to be honest

It needs to have a catchy ass hook and a great beat for people to even remotely start reading into the lyrics.

And when someone listens to some faux-deep shit, they think the rapper's a lyrical god(dess) and that they're listening to Illmatic.

How successful was I can? I wasn't into hiphop around then but I remember every school assembly started and ended with that song.

^successful enough that i heard it in DFW texas during the candypaint paul wall/chamillionaire era of radio. i was likewise surprised to hear "get by" by Talib bleed through the regular, it put me onto some nice shit.

CRS has it though, even in the day a shitty hook gets slept on, and that's the weakness of a lotta interesting MC's.

I think it's a bit sad, but I feel like the purpose of that song is so people can party to it and for those who like songs with a meaning and stuff behind it, it is within the song as well.

People get drunk to Swimming Pools....I don't think what Irish is talking about will happen for at least a couple years. Maybe something mad catchy and conscious will hit the radio but it has to be both.

I'm so glad my brothers voted ScHoolboy Q so high, I'm guessing he'll be number 2 in GAF Hop album of the year yessir. I hope Control System got a lot of votes too.
