Really? I played the first 4 hours and hated all of it.
Sleeping Dogs was the first open world game I've truly enjoyed since Crackdown. Esch nails it in the post above. Characterization was actually pretty good--not just for Wei, but for the larger cast, and the more arcadey style of play was right up my alley.
GTA IV was too much of a sim, and SR has just gotten stupid.

Kamspy would back me up. Y'all just like to follow hiveminds when it comes to everything. I put 54 hours into GTAIV first week it was out. Love the car physics, love the shooting. Love it. Still some the best free roam car chases this side of a good Driver game.
Sleeping Dogs has shit driving and manages to be even clunkier than GTA in a lot of ways (transitioning to action moments).

GTA IV was one of the greatest games of all gen. Shit set a precedent in the industry and is a game where there are actual consequences to your choices. Combine that with the greatest cast of characters in the entire GTA series and the best mission in the entire GTA series (Three Leaf Clover), and yeah it's a pretty dope game.
Saints Row 1 and 2 were poor games, they lack the flavour, refined mechanics and satisfaction in both driving mechanics and shooting that made GTA special even in the 2D era. Not to mention they fail to bring any sort of personality to the city itself, the radio was poor etc.. Haven't played 3 but the rest of the series seems to fail in every regard except side missions in comparison to the king.
EDIT: Oh and har har you get a dildo as a weapon, and all that other "like the old GTA" ridiculous shit that doesn't mean a damn thing when all the game's mechanics are subpar.

I just found GTA IV to be incredibly boring and stale.I bought the collectors edition day one...and was really disappointed. I heard good things about the Gay Tony episode though.

SR's actual mechanics were on point. It's the mission structure from hell that fucks everything.

watch dogs is gonna be a piece of shit after it's first four hours. do people forget it's a ubisoft game? their open world is gonna be so dull and have the most repetitive missions.
gta iv was better than sleeping dogs. i was disappointed by gta iv and annoyed by that damn cousin ringing up the cellphone...but then i check the stats and i realized i played it for about 30+ hours.
gta v will be fantastic. really excited for the michael (and to a lesser extent franklin) storylines.

Dead at the hivemind comment. you dont need to try so hard to be a special snowflake fam, you already are (pause). anyway i agree with you that he base gameplay vehicle mechanics for gtaiv are great. no question. actually the general world interaction is stellar. that said the content just kinda sucks. the missions are all boring as hell to me. its like og crysis actually, the shell for the game is perfect, but the actual game itself is vanilla and booooring. and fails to be memorable in any way. im actually surprised you like it so much, given that you seem to be the kind of guy wholl take a flawed but interesting or aesthetically/conceptual game over one that checks checkmarks.

GTA IV gets a while to get going but it's a decent ride from there. I don't know, it always felt to me like this was what they were always trying to strive for but the kinks needed to be ironed out. It's a lot different from the rest of the GTAs, and that understandably threw people off but there were so many improvements everywhere, I could tolerate the brown piss filter and some early escorting missions (which really don't represent the rest of the game).
GTA V looks like it's poised to unite fans of GTA new and old. They're pretty much putting together everything everyone liked from GTAIV and things from the III trilogy that people complained about there not being in IV all into one game, and then some more.

Detox is right. It's a loot game with average loot and a bunch of reddit style nerd humor. It's a good game, because it has some decent gunplay and fun guns, but really nothing special, and something like Bulletstorm has superior gunplay. Solid B, a B+ before i realized how monotonous it was.

Borderlands 2 is the only game to do loot right this gen. In fact, I think it's the best loot game ever made because it maintains the crack loop for new loot much better because it just keeps coming and you're always making hard decisions.
Also I think my first tweet/follow ever was trying to get that dude to drop AOTL.
Saints Row 3 might have one of my favorite openings to a game. Skydiving through planes shooting fools while Kanye's Power plays in the background is just so good.
