Shallow is one way to put it, but we're just talking looks here so that term really doesn't apply. Of course personality and stuff matters, I'm not thirsty enough to date a chick based on looks alone. Maybe it's just cause I tend to have a functionalist perspective on most things, but I don't really feel the need to justify why I -and most men- prefer fit women. It's evolutionarily advantageous, shows signs of good health, generally indicative someone is better fit for reproduction, etc. There are tons of reasons why men prefer the ideal shape for a female, and why it is the ideal.
I've never seen a fat chick with a nice ass, ever. With a big ass? Maybe. But a nice one? Not in my experience. TBH just having a ton of cellulite in the trunk isn't attractive, it's disgusting to me.
Now I'm a pretty skinny guy myself, and I have a pretty big hunch most (lol only 2) of the chicks I've been with haven't been with me for the looks, but I'm not about to change what I find attractive based on 'fat chicks need love too.' I always look at it like, there are way too many fine single chicks out there for me to be content with less, and if I'm not up to snuff to reach my goals, then it's on me to reach higher rather than to water down the goal.
