His bars, flow, basically his technical rapping ability are pretty good. It's undeniable. He's basically a battle rapper.

His actual music is pretty boring from just about every perspective. He didn't even get good beats like Royce used to back in the day. As far as subject material and songwriting... Gross. Not for me. Too self pitying/whiny.
Man, this is so on point. I was about to say almost the exact same thing. He can certainly rap but jeez if he is not one of the most boring rappers.

Train of Thought / Black Star >>>>>> the entire slaughterhouse solo and team discography though.

Black Star is a good example of this though. Talibs solo albums don't hold up when its just him rapping the whole time. Talib works great when he's working with other people or going back and forth with somebody.

People are saying that Rocky's weed carrier friends album is good? Hasn't everything the mob has put out been utter shit?

I'm not done with it yet, but it's kinda cool. I find a couple gafhoppers have a tendency to overrate/be overly excited for oddball shit like odd future, captain murphy, A$ap etc etc but this junt has a pretty cool sound. It's like a really trap Killah Priest album, kinda has this ethereal egyptian theme mixed with the A$AP bone thug style rapping and trap sensibilities. The songwriting isn't bad overall (so far).

Trap Lord is an accessible Raider Clan album.

Lmao at people in there talking about 'an underground hip hop topic' . Shit would be too funny. Its funny to watch p4k style hipsters and dudes still salty about the fall of backpack shit vent their frustrations

The funniest thing about this is the underground dudes who want to complain about this verse being aite or good, but not more noteworthy than "underground" shit. What underground shit? I was watching AG The Coroner's manager slowly boil over this shit last night. Are we going to act like AG, Sean Price, etc are better than Kendrick Lamar? What exact verses can they point to as better? All these dudes rap about is beating the shit outta people yet they wanna act like Kendrick's verse was one dimensional or some shit lmao.

At least Statik could point to a verse he felt was better: Black Thought's on Bird's Eye View. We can debate that but obviously Thought's verse was amazing. These other dudes are just MAD. Shit is funny. House Shoes said it perfect: if you're an old head complaining about Kendrick's verse, you're a fucking relic. Get over it.

I have to echo esch; Trap Lord is coming more consistent than LongLive. Surprised @ how much I'm enjoying this, though I shouldn't be since I loved Shabba.

This is what Questlove was tweeting about last night and then said Black Thought is never in anyone's list. Which I think is true, but I always associate Black Thought with the Roots. That's how I justify forgetting him in my greats list.

Budden had a good streak, up until after Mood Muzik 2/3. He fell off considerably after them and never put out a good mainstream album. His technical skills can be off the charts when he wants, mainly around Fabolous when he's doing family reunion type songs.

The tracks flow together better, it's more cohesive, it still has appealing poppy sensitivities while sounding original and fresh, and overall it's pretty hype. Might be top 10 material for me, and while I dont feel like Ferg was ever a bum I didn't expect this from him.

yo i can't front the production on this Ferg album is flames so far. I'm kinda feeling like this is fresher than LongLive lmao

Not necessarily. People can rap technically well but can't make good songs or albums. Rapping skills don't always mean someone can make good music. Talib Kweli for example, the guy can rhyme no doubt, but he struggles to make solid albums and songs.

What qualifies as a good/solid song? What are the criteria? Why isn't just a good rapping technique enough? Why is someone you'd categorize as "basically a battle rapper" not elevated the same way as someone who's not, or not only that?

I mean, it's completely subjective but I'd say that for me, the difference lies in the ability to communicate some part of the human experience or evoke a response in the listener, or to create a sound that marries emcee and beat in a kind of synergistic way. When people are knocking 'battle rappers', they're pretty much shytting on guys like Budden, Canibus, etc etc because they are just rhyme machines for the most part. They can do the LYRICAL ITHICAL MYTHICAL HYPOTHETICALLY REALISTICAL shit for days.... But their music isn't really about much, nor is it sonically interesting/innovative when you take their beat choice into account. They pretty much go into most tracks trying to 'murder' them. They don't really understand the art of floating on a beat like a Jay-Z or Curren$y, either. You have to write songs while you rap. More rhymes/punchlines/wordiness isn't better. It's like how Yngwie Malmsteen is an amazing guitarist, but his music he writes is a bunch of meandering scale fap. I appreciate it in the same way I appreciate a nice pair of perfect tits on a porn star, but you and I both know it's empty on the inside.

Budden DOES have periods where he abandons that shit to speak on himself, I just find him abhorrent in the same way I dislike The Game, so that shit doesn't appeal to me personally.
