Jay has gone at least Platinum with every album... that's 15 albums.
Again, I said he's a consistent performer. And he hasn't lost his spot in the game. Not many artist can claim that benchmark. If rap was a marathon not a sprint, he's managed to outlast his peers and stay near the head of the pack in music. He's one of the few rappers to go platinum in the last year (not to say that's the only gauge of music success).

But did he ever sell diamond like Em or Outkast? Almost 9 million like 50 Cent? 8 million like Nelly? He's just never been a musical phenomenon or DMX'd the game. Of course DMX like a lot of these rappers have 5-minute careers. Like Jay said he's not a business man, he's a business man.

pfft.. talking shit for the sake of talking shit.. :/

U no I love U ace

i hear you. just haven't wanted to drop money on new kicks for the last little while, but I was just out a few days ago and narrowed my next purchase down to these two. feeling the lighter ones right now.

Those ones at bottom are fresh. I need to grab a clean pair of exercise kicks myself ,cause my Five Fingers are on their last legs. Still there enough to be viable for weightlifting, but the cardio has done them in.

I see it as a talent. I don't think his music is amazing by his own standards but to remain relevant and important is phenomenal.

Kanye West is super low even commercially speaking.
Based on that list, no. He's where he should be based on his sales performance in the 2000 decade.

#10 is debatable, especially taken as a solo artist. And the omission of Nelly given Country Grammar, Nellyville and Sweat Suit alone is strange. I mean they had Cam'ron on there.

It Was Written is an excellent album, but quite a few people considered it a pandering bite of the Raekwon mafia genre, and a disappointment. I Am... also falls victim to a lot of the same issues, except with Shiny Suit rap. I like the album, but Nas does not stride the line between commercial and critical well, it's awkward. I would definitely not say that I Am... made Nas that dude. Especially when Chronic 2001 dropped that year and defined a decade's worth of sound to come.

It is the rap album of the summer. Go outside and drive around with your windows down. You will probably hear it playing out of a car in areas spanning a range of incomes. Kanye is nobody's daddy. If anything, MCHG's similarity to WTT in sound and themes would imply that Jay's sensibilities guided the album, not Kanye's. Kanye took an L with Yeezus. I like it a lot, it might be my favorite album of the year, but it will be looked at as an 808s style failure.

I'm not a stan for MCHG. I just don't hate it, and enjoy some of the songs. You seem real angry right now. It's a solid 3-3.5 mic album. Some high points, lots of missteps.

It's a 2 mic album and I'm being generous. Who cares if it's a commercial failure when you're making as much money as Ye...Yeezus will be looked at as good experiment as time passes, while MCHG will be looked at Hov's worst album, which it might just be...I don't get this whole if it sells then it's good outlook on music...That's bullshit.

The most questionable inclusion is Cam, but I give him 900000000 points for his internet rap influence.

Really? I think MCHG is a decent album

I never have been a huge Jay fan anyways tho

But personally it's in the top 5 of his albums for me

I'll grudgingly admit MCHG is the rap album of the summer. I've never heard anyone riding around listening to Yeezus, yet I always hear Tom Ford or some other wack Jay track bumping from cars. The only other thing I constantly hear is Born Sinner.

why do you acknowledge mchg as the album of the summer if you think its wack?

does album of the summer just mean "what the lowest common denominator hip hop fans are listening to the most on commercial radio" ?

MCHG is worse than Blueprint 3. At least that had Thank You, A Star Is Born, and even Run This Town.

Blueprint 3 had Empire State of Mind and On to the Next One but outside of that it was trash

Now I will say the bads on MCHG are as bad as I heard from Jay

I imagine it's because there wasn't much else going on this summer.

i flip back and forth between the rap and pop stations (2 of each) like every song depending on what's on. mostly to avoid fucking Blurred Lines. and i have never heard Macklemore on the rap stations.

Apparently J. Cole and Diddy got into a fight last night at a VMA after party show?

Take everything with a large grain of salt.

Hi guys,

I’m here to shed some light on the incident. Diddy was joking about Kendrick Lamar and the Control song. Saying that Kendrick isn’t the king of anything – just having a little fun. He imitated Shyne and said his “**** was trash” and J. Cole was super drunk and didn’t take it well. Cole started getting heated and said the reason there’s no competition in hip hop is because Diddy will have people murdered. Naturally Diddy responded and said Cole’s album was wack and told Cole to **** off basically. Diddy said that Villuminati was disrespectful and Cole was pathetic.

At this point Cole lost it and started to accuse Diddy of the murder of Pac and Big, it escalated and Cole threw shapes with Diddy, from what I’ve been told it seems that Cole was actually winning and Diddy is definitely a better businessman than he is fighter… by miles. Naturally security stepped in and Hov was not pleased to say the least. Hov was really mad, and made sure Cole was escorted completely away from the venue. A few people filmed it but I believe they were forced to delete the footage. My friend says he still has pictures so I’m expecting those in my email very shortly, he said he uploaded it straight to Dropbox so even if he was forced to delete he would still have copies.

Rumour is that Hov is debating on letting Cole leave RocNation once his next album drops. Not sure on that one though. People have said that Hov felt that Rich Niggaz was aimed at him and there has been tension between the two.

Jhene Aiko got into a bad car accident last night :(

I never listen to the radio. Probably why I'm out of touch. I just throw music on a thumb drive. I wish my radio had XM or play music from my iPhone through Pandora, etc.

I listen to radio at work a decent amount. I don't mind, it helps me get a handle on what's hot right now, and pop shit for playlists when i'm out or having a quick pregame at my place. The macklemore thing is hilarious because he gets ridiculous spins on the pop stations but on the black owned rap stations he gets paid straight dust, though on the hybrid pop rap one here he gets some play.

You say this based on what?

Whether the people on this forum like to admit or not, Jay Z's album is liked by the mass majority of the people. Call them whatever you want, but his songs are all over the radio here in NYC. The pop stations play Holy Grail while the rap stations also play that they also rotate 2-3 other songs from the album.

I am not arguing its merit, but if you are looking at how popular it is or how people received it, its largely positive.

To me its an average album. Nothing earth shattering but not garbage status either. Which seems to be the new barometer for all entertainment. Either the greatest thing ever or worst thing ever.

Macklemore is finally getting play here on the 2 rap stations. They won't play his latest but while the pop stations are done playing Can't Hold Us and Thrift Shop, hot97 and power 105 just started to.

I bet they really wish they didn't have to. Could have squeezed in another trash Drake or Wayne remix if they weren't forced to play him.

Yeah, right. I'm sure even if it was about Hov (and Cole put it on the same album as songs where he brags about being signed to the Roc), Hov would be too busy caking off of Cole to be trippin'. Hov isn't one of those emotional rich types. He's too big to give a fuck.

i read this thread and ask myself the same question every day

There is something to getting media play

Being able to create music that appeals to a huge audience

That is why it is brought up as a valid point of discussion

Cole and Diddy might have had tension in the past with him declining the invite to Diddy's white party and all.

Jay kinda seemed kinda indifferent towards Cole in The Breakfast Club interview, but it's been so consistently like that, it's hard to tell if that was irregular or not.

Yea. I'm sure there was an altercation, but I doubt any of the shit I quoted might've been true or not.

You don't know what fear is;
