Smh @ rappers jumping on a song that actively shits on what you're rapping about in the verses you're spitting. I haven't heard a remix yet that deals with what she's singing about (which some view as racist).
I think they do that on purpose, actually.

yo s/hes talking about all this peace and unity shit, ima flip dat and get wild on em!!! that'll attract their fanbase!

I never really thought Royals as racist myself... That's kinda reading too much into it, imo.

It is highly conspicuous of her to make the targets of the socioeconomic critique of the song all things that rich black dudes like to spend money on. It's more like liberal I don't want you staying over at that boy's house racism than dern tootin' confederate flag racism.

Yea Macklemore's thrift shop shit guilty of it. When you're poor and downtrodden, and you come into money you want symbols that you're doing alright. It's that new money vs old money.

I don't think I'd term it racist. But there definitely is a broader issue where people want to place western materialism all on the foot of rappers and black people. As if "keeping up with the Joneses" was something we created.

Even so, her targets are exclusively pretty black/rap. How come she's not mentioning new pickup trucks

Maybe we can forgive her that, i reckon she is from New Zealand and admittedly they aren't exactly privy to American senses of racialism.

esch you fucks with The Field at all? diggin this new one....

Actually not into it at all, outside of No. No...

It feels like he got everything possible out of From Here We Go Sublime (perfect album) and Yesterday And Today (not perfect, but a new direction executed real well). Now there's nowhere for him to go.

Only gone through it like three times though. Maybe it'll click later.

damn, that's more than me, im no expert on dude, i remember liking FHWGSublime, but that was the last one I'd heard by him. I only listened once through, but would still go out on a limb and say it's completely worthwhile. that being said sounds like you follow him more closely, so i believe you, just dont agree as of yet.

i mean uh, Is your name esch?!

what other new electronic music should i check des?

that jordan pic, lol, looks like marv albert's wig

I never thought of the hook on Royals to implicate Black Culture necessarily. I think people need to keep in mind that she's from a generation that grew up almost entirely on rap and pop as being a mainstream influence (moreso than say Country or Rock). When you see Justin Beiber and Miley Cyrus influences and personal style being what older generations might label as being black or "urban," then it starts to make sense.

Lorde's lyrics seem to be more about class differences than anything else. I also have no clue what the youth culture is like in New Zealand. So there's that too.

tbh it's more likely I'll come around to your side of things. I fucking hated FHWGS with a passion and actively took every opportunity to shit on that album for like a year. Ended up getting high and playing Geometry Wars with a friend and she put it on, things clicked into place and stayed there. Sometimes it takes me a while to come around on things.

I'll exit now.
