9th Wonder Talks JAY Z, Little Brother, JAMLA & More On 'The Combat Jack Show'
Live from Atlanta, at the tenth anniversary of the #A3c Music Festival, we finally caught up with producer and Harvard scholar 9th Wonder where he share his incredible story about leading a scene in North Carolina with the incredible Little Brother crew to not giving JAY Z a track he had for his own group. The breakup with Phonte and Big Pooh, making hits for Destiny's Child and why he's going so hard for his Jamla Records premier artist Rapsody, why he really wants to collaborate with Rich Homie Quan and of course, his journey in becoming a professor at Harvard University. This was truly an honor building with 9th and I hope you enjoy this as much as we did.

Listening now. 9th just issued forth the most through, passive aggressive ether I've ever heard aimed at Master P and Diddy. I won't spoil it for you (21min mark) but man, that idea has been brewing in my mind for a fucking decade and I couldn't figure out how to put it into words until now. I'm still laughing lol.

Breh you never came through with any bands or albums.

Oh shit. Garage Rock...ok...My brother plays in some garage rock bands and is plugged into the scene pretty heavily...many of the groups I know might be a bit old...but here I go.

Jay Reatard is good fun. Jay Reatard - Blood Visions (entire album) *IMAGE NSFW* Also he died a few years back RIP. (A few of the groups might be this way...just a head's up)

The Exploding Hearts I'm a Pretender - This one's a bit more Power-pop...it's good for chicks that like poppy songs they can sing along with. Sadly a few of them passed away so they only had one amazing album and that was that.

The Sonics - Have Love will Travel you can hear these guys influencing many Garage Rock sounds and modern rock too... they did lots of Cover songs and emphasized loud and energetic.

The Lyres - What a Girl Can't Do

The 5.6.7.8's (the girl group from Kill Bill) - Bomb the Twist

Black Lips - "Funny"

King Khan & BBQ Show - Fish Fight

Guitar Wolf - Jet Generation (WARNING IT STARTS WITH FIVE SECONDS FEEDBACK)

Les Sexareenos - Everybody Sexareeno!

Ok, here's a pretty good list of some solid songs/bands that are good to start with. I can add more or point out other bands with similar sounds if you dig these.

Gorgeous might be my favorite Ye song tbh. that distorted guitar sample is just out of this world.

Gorgeous is to MBDTF what So Amazing is to 808's; even when i wasn't feeling the latter album, i had to acknowledge the track's greatness

TBH TGSNT1 was good, but I think it gave me more Saigon than I want to listen to in the next few years. Heard good things about TGSNT2 as well but I haven't listened to it yet either.

I think the first two are better than this new one but both the second and third are worth a listen.

Danny acting like he wants to be on an independent and make all of his money off the indie crowd is doing some real counter-intuitive shit right now.

Nas didn't forget many lyrics at the show I went to.

I remember the end of one verse on a track he was kinda stumbling and played it off then on another track he went ham and rapped every lyric.

rappers stay biting Yeezus

Kanye's mask wearing during the Yeezus period was so signifant., it caused guys like MF Doom to wear masks during his entire career. Eminem wore a mask on his Anger Management tour in ~2000 because Kanye was so influential. Ghostface was rocking joints on his face through the 00s, because Ye made it hot when he watched a couple daft punk concerts in 2006 and then thought about putting a mask on in 2012. Gotta hand it to the guy.

Kanye's masks are pretty dope. I don't care for the one in the bottom right of that particular image though.

Remember when Kanye wore that eagle headdress thing early last year?
