New Kendrick interview with Whoo Kid. They talk about a bunch of stuff with respect to how he's handled his brand the past year, etc.

- Confirms he's working with George Clinton, shot a video with him
- Doesn't really say anything explicitly, but you can tell dude is super inspired by the theme of self-love
- Jay Rock album probably out before his
- Seems like the Black Hippy album is looking a bit more likely
- Says he has a great relationship with Em, they talk about longevity and how to best embody who you are in your career, respecting your own value, overexposure, etc.
- Dre is "always" in the studio with Kendrick

The theme of "self love". Why would he need to do that when he's got so many groupies?

Lol seriously though dont kanye and so many other artists already do this in their tracks? I don't really get why kendrick keeps pushing this as a message when gassing yourself up has been a staple of the genre since forever

Yeah rap is all about loving yourself these days. Fuck the haters, I'm the shit, yadda yadda yadda. it's why I can't bite on the 'i fux with I cause it has a positive message!'
astroturfing
. Now a song about loving your fellow man, or something confident and political might have been a different story.

I don't think Kendrick is talking about self-love in the same way you may associate general rap shit talk or braggadocio. He mentions it in the context of people not having self-respect, talks about an educated (college?) kid who was at his last show who was gonna kill himself until he heard GKMC, etc.

y'all not ready for this level of positivity

Yeah, I feel like I've heard something similar from every rapper, or that you could draw up something similar for any other rapper.

I mean, good for him for getting inspired by his interactions with fans but the way he's been consistently talking about that in this latest press run and how i came out in general, I can't say he's exactly inspiring confidence in me.

Back into the wait and see bin.

Is there any more ironic line in hip-hop than "I won't plant seeds, don't need an extra mouth I can't feed"?

Those child support fees.

So much cynicism and self hate on this page, shit is stressful bruhs. I guess being positive=being white corny now huh.

these #newsouljagirls are fucking up the game.

That's why it feels devoid of nuance. Why should you love yourself? Do you deserve it? Just telling people to be confident is pointless..... Fruitless. You don't assume confidence, you build it through guided action and labor, or being raised a certain way. There's nothing wrong with making inspirational music but I don't feel inspired by I even in the same way I might by I Can for example. And I don't think many other people will be either.

We've heard one song that might not make the album. Kendrick usually speaks profoundly. Holy shit guys.

Some of you are fucking about, but you guys are just trying to do this right now, so if it does let you down you are the ones who called it. One poor song and not much material for a year and suddenly Kendrick can't write a song or talk about his album without people jumping down his throat.

I'm not sure about the theme, but I have no idea how he's going about it in sound or lyrical content. The album can be shit, but I doubt it.

It just feels like he's trying to give a higher reasoning to him going a bit more "bubblegum". It's obviously a song designed for commercials. Just own up to that fact.

OMG this Theo London

Shit is an experience. It's jazzy, it's tribal, it's electronic, it's FUNKY, it's jingly, it's 80s, it's lush, it's disco, it's soulful, it's Caribbean. Such a simple idea for an album but it's very well executed; every song is indeed it's own vibe, and it feels like one of those albums which you can come back to if you're in multiple different moods.

I have a hard-on for anything with funk or electronic elements and this has both. Ye is killing it with this executive production stuff, though Theo has always been the quirky type. Heartbreaker is probably the stand out for me.
I had a strong feeling you would like it. Don't know why it took you so long though.

I Can doesn't get enough love. It's one of my favourite Nas songs, easily.

I agree BTW.

I'm so behind, I need that HRD wrap-up early. I had a list running of releases GAF-Hop was loving this quarter but I lost it.

All I know is the Black Milk is one of them, and the other is some weird BLVC shit that I can't remember the name of.

KRIT must have saw those sales estimates. Should have stayed independent.

I've been thinking about why KRIT can't even do decently, despite doing everything we say an artist needs to do in order to succeed (build and support a fan base, tour nonstop, etc). I think perhaps it's the fact that he's a very insular artist? He doesn't really branch out of his niche (southern throwback shit), doesn't work with other artists much, etc. But even the south apparently doesn't crown him, like the west coast embraced Kendrick or how Toronto rides for Drake/The Weeknd. That shit must be depressing to him.

Yeah I dunno, some people are just destined to lose sadly.

His albums aint been that hot either though tbh. Drake and Kendrick put out some good stuff, KRIT's been a bit forgettable since his first couple mixtapes. Just some gems here and there but that's about it.

Ever since I threw on KRIT In the car with my brother and as soon as he heard his accent he said "change this shit," I've known the answer to this.

The other reason is that his peers won't as readily cosign him despite fucking with him. He didn't even get buzz out of Control really. Even the OGs gave him a shot with singles (Bun B, Tip), but those went nowhere. Tip jumps on the Thugger wave and the shit balloons. Ain't nobody got time for Krizzle.

Probably BLVCSVND's BLVC God 2.
I think this was it. Thanks!

Agreed. I like Krit, but haven't been crazy about a full length of his since Return of 4eva. None of them have been consistent listens front to back.

Cole hasn't released a good album yet has the people. Obviously there are big differences between the two (female fans) but still.

I don't think it's the accent, considering the dominant radio rap is still southern. But then again...maybe it's because "the underground" doesn't really fuck with southern shit.

ayo who is that chick in the plaid....I'm weirdly attracted to her. She's giving me vibes of that porn series where chicks are dressed super homely, then they clean up and look hot.

He mad like 4 classic mixtapes and got burned out. To add insult to injury he can't even make money off of those due to sample issues. If he was independent he could live off touring but Def Jam aint about "artist working for a living" either give them hits or hit the the road while they bury your career.....

Shit is sad really.

KRIT can make good songs but he cant make a hot song or a joint women feel. He'll never experience sales success until he can do one of those 2 things. Even Cole can do that.

He's out here trying to replicate mid-90s southern rap for a generation that doesn't party to much southern rap made before 2004. That numbers a rough estimate but you get what i'm saying. Even that Just Last Week w/ Future was marred by his presence instead of improved.

I think part of it is that KRIT kinda raps a little like Pimp C but instead of a reckless no fucks given swagged out southern rapper it all comes together like old man porch Cunninglynguistskanye or something. There's a disconnect there. He has a kind of dad rap feel to him that can't be shaken, even on his 'i fuck hoes' tracks.

Oh and his music will never appeal to women and he refuses to make shit that will pop in the club. I believe he has the talent tho; We Buy Gold, Money on the Floor, a lot of shit on Wuz Here, he coulda went that route.

What can you do.

KRIT will appeal to women if he ever gets to the point where his shit is on the radio. I don't think he's at a point where that's a factor in his success/failure at getting to the next level.

this song from KRIT sounds like bootleg drake on the hook
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ik_h_J7YFHk

feels like it was his play to get women listeners. is it working?

Nope. It's a decent attempt at a Drakelike, but his rapping missed the big points for How To Rap For Women. The hook is whatever, and he's rapping too hard. You're supposed to float on those joints, sing songy almost. And this song doesn't have the punchlines you need for that shit either.

And everybody know it, chain still glowin'
Kick it with my folk that ain't been here before
Thought I seen everything I can see on the low
Wish I seen from the door that you the best of the best
Make a broke motherfucker thumb through a check
I ain't really trippin' on ya homegirl, she was in her own world
Shawty, I'm just hopin' you next to show up and show out
Ya make it hard for me just to roll up and roll out
To be honest
You the type of chick a nigga search for when he have to go out
Spotlight, night life, live in V.I. every weekend
I ain't trippin' on a busta that really ain't nothin'
I'm hopin' you down for the creepin'
Like damn, super throwed, kill the pole
The whole club had to show you love the way you toot it up and get it off the floor
Like damn, tell me you know you the greatest
Ain't a chick in the V.I.P. that can shine like this, baby girl, you know you made it

This shit ain't doing it. It's too direct, too telegraphed.

Meh. Throw Drake on the hook and it hits the Billboard 100.

Rico Love isn't what's holding the track back from success.

i don't even think he has the talent for it really. the only joint of his i've ever heard at parties/clubs to a good reaction is that Yoko Ono shit and even then he's just a guest on it. Country Shit remix was aight but it never caught on. the rest i wouldnt even bother playing/requesting at a party/club cause it'd just kill the energy.

his tracks just lack a natural bounce that you need to have for party tracks.

and as you said on the girl tracks, he's overrapping on them. krit good at what he does but it's a very narrow lane w/o upside.
