YG's album isn't bad but Blankface really puts its flaws in perspective. It's a very one note album music wise. Yes YG addresses a lot of issues from various perspectives which is good, but the production feels like a retread. There are a few amazing beats on the album, then you have some that are just whatever. There's also little funk or bounce to the album outside of Twist My Fingaz. The bass is synthy overall, making the other throwback sounds seem a little weird when mixed together. Overall this gives the album a very one-note sound gets old after awhile.
Whereas Blankface manages to experiment with a lot of different sounds successfully. You have some bounce on tracks like Neva Change, some Outkast type rock on the intro track, funk on the title track, some bangers (By Any Means, Dope Dealer), etc. Light jazz fingerprints throughout the album too. Not to mention Black Thoughts, one of my favorite tracks of the year. What a haunting, oddly cathartic track.
Blankface is what a summer album should be. There's shit for riding, shit when you're depressed, bangers for the car, and some lady tracks. I never liked Studio, it sounded like some shit a chick might listen to while masturbating. But I can fuck to Overtime.
