Dude kind of has his own vibe, which I respect.

I will remember Swollen Members fondly for many of their early singles, especially with Moka Only, but not much more.
Yeah, I got into Madchild recently. I found his voice grating at first, but like you said, he's got his own vibe and it's pretty dope. He's mad underrated on the mic too. Really talented and some of the best wordplay around.

Who's Ocean Wisdom?
That's him there look. You can click on the picture for a day with Ocean Wisdom.

Ok, but who cares?
The UK rap scene, as an unsigned nobody this lad dropped a video on his own youtube channel that exploded into well over a million views, which is frankly insane. He was promptly signed to the largest independent Hip-Hop label in Europe and has been the hype thing ever since.

Well what's so good about this guy?
Bars, bars and flow. Bars, flow, skill and energy.
Bars
. Wisdom is an utterly uncompromising lyrical monster and proud of it. I've had to stop myself from whipping out the lyrics booklet and just quoting shit. He can write a mean hook as well as being able to switch his flow like it's nothing. Tbh he's capable of the lot which is what makes him so special, but he focuses on bars.

Bars? Brev i don't give a fuck about bars
Then it's probably safe to stop reading because you will not enjoy this album. Uncompromising as i said. Personally i think it's refreshing for a young mc to come out and be all about bars and not chase what's trending. It's a brave move in this day and age, although maybe not so much if you're as good at it as he is.

Onto the album then..

Walkin'
Splittin' the Racket
Snakes and Blaggers
High Street

4 singles from the album, but also the first 4 tracks in order on the tracklist so a perfect introduction really. There's also another single, One Take which is towards the end of the album. All produced by Dirty Dike.

Dirty Dike?
Self proclaimed wanker and obnoxious cunt, Dirty Dike is on the buttons from start to finish. There's a good variety of sounds here, one or two are straight old school (Splittin' the Racket, Real Smooth), one or two are grimey (Dolally, Mazin' Hazin', and Wiz comes with the grimey flows on them ones), one or two are buttery smooth (Imaginary?, 4U) etc.

Freeze is Dike at his best as it starts out as this spaced out meld of old and new and by the end when Scissor comes in it's subtly evolved into something quite grimey, and Scissor kills it with the flow. Overall though i'd say everything he does is closer to the old school hip-hop sound.

Features

There's a good balance of features here and they're mostly worthy additions but there's a few i have to be speak about specifically as they're highlights of the whole album

Klashnekoff's verse - Perhaps the biggest testament to how highly Wizz is rated is that he managed to get K-lash on this album, and oh my days he absolutely fucking crushes his verse on Devilish. Shit is unseemly. Has to be heard.

Baxter verse - Casually strolls in and destroys his quick verse on 4U, but i expect nothing less from the best in the business /bias.

Remus verse - Fellow young up start Remus Might just be the standout feature on the album with his verse on O Kiddi K, which might just be the biggest banger on the whole record. This track is one verse each either side of a quick hook and it comes in at over 6 minutes. Best believe they go in. Anyone familiar with Taskforce might be interested to know that Remus is Farma G's lad, and Chester P's nephew. You can definitely tell listening to him, he can be rapping about Pegasus or Goblins one second and be on some right street shit the next, definitely his fathers son.

Shit i almost forgot about Foreign Beggers, they smash it as well.

General Thoughts on the album

Well, It's an album about nothing in particular, there is no theme or concept or overall message from the album except the Wizzy clearly feels that barring needs to make a comeback, it's just banger after banger of him tearing it up from start to finish. There are no skits, no interludes and no intro's or outro's, and clocking in at 75 minutes and 17 fully formed tracks if there's one thing nobody will be complaining about it's a lack of content.

For me you could probably listen to these tracks in more or less any order and it wouldn't effect the overall experience of the album, because there isn't an overall album experience, there certainly isn't any exclusive reward or feeling for sitting through the record from start to finish, except that it begins to wind down slightly from Imaginary onwards. Some might consider that a negative but it doesn't bother me in this case.

My two main gripes with the album personally are..

1: The lack of depth or meaning in the vast majority of these bars, as ill as he is he really isn't saying anything all that thought provoking or meaningful here, an initial disappointment for me but I've gotten over it. 2: The lack of some more laid back flows, which he's proven he's more than capable of. Almost everything here ranges from rapid to 100mph and there's some doubletime in places. It would have been nice to have one or two chill tunes to break it up a bit. The closest it comes would be Imaginary and One Take, but they're right next to each other towards the end of the album.

Tracks i don't rate
I don't like Gone Featuring Lunar C, comfortably O's worst verses on the album and i don't rate Lunar C. I'm not keen on the final two tracks called W.A.Y.D and Jungle either so the album ends on a bit of a downer for me. I wasn't much for Splittin' the Racket and Mazin' Hazin' initially but they've really grown on me, Gone is the only track i outright don't fuck with though so that says volumes

Top 5
Imaginary?
O Kiddi K Feat Remus
Devilish Feat Klashnekoff
Snakes and Blaggers
High Street

Verdict

Sensational debut that lives up to the hype and provides more proof if it was needed (it's not at this point) that the UK scene is stronger than it's ever been and just as healthy as it is in the states.

When's it out?
Tomorrow. Don't sleep

and just in time for the football as well, sensational.

So....let's talk Jay-Z.

It seems he's definitely the most polarizing "great" rappers alongside Kanye...you'll find so many people calling him either one of the greatest, or one of the most overrated. I mean, which one is it for you folks?

Reasonable Doubt one of the GOAT albums. Then the dude spent the rest of his career being a cultural trendsetter. Dude has like, a dozen singles over 20 years that crowds of white people who dont even really fuck with rap know the words to verbatim.
Im glad hes the elder spokeperson for the genre, even if I didnt agree with some of his paper chasing artistic decisions.
Seeing what Drake does now with his conveyor belt of writers makes even more appreciative of the fact that Jay at least put out shit with his imprint on it.

Oi, i reject that par. It's Sunday innit, and i wrote all that in bed whilst not feeling particularly well.

On reflection i'd switch out High Street for Freeze.

People are still sleeping on them.

The Earthgang - Friday video for those who missed it

I had a quick run through a while ago when Des posted it and Missed Calls is a tune. Still need give it a proper listen though.

Ferg gives us some more info about ASAP
ASAP Ferg is in the midst of preparing his sophomore album, Always Strive And Prosper, and from what we've heard so far, it should be something special. A few months back, Fergenstein revealed that he spent a week recording with 40, as well as enlisting DJ Khalil as something an executive producer, but in a new interview with Bootleg Kev, he shared a couple more tidbits about specific songs on the LP.

"I have a queen on the album, and her name is Missy Elliott. I got her on a song with Fatman Scoop. Mustard did the beat..." he revealed, before going on to name a couple of the othr big collaborations slated for the project. "I have a song with Chris Brown and Ty Dolla $ign for the ladies. I've got a song with Big Sean for the ladies. I've got a crazy joint with Rick Ross, and I've got a joint with Chuck D and my grandmother. it's called Beautiful People".

Later on he once again touched on the recording setup he had with Khalil and Clams Casino, which sounds like it could be pretty interesting.

Apple Music got a whole page today dedicated to High Focus Records.

I'm about 3/4 of the way through Chaos '93. No fucking doubt whatsoever that Ocean has the lyrical skill. His music falls in between hip-hop & grime for me. It's a shame but it happens with very lyrical rappers - they don't normally have super catchy choruses or identifiers.

Snakes & Blaggers is currently my favourite track but that's also my most familiar track. Upon first listen the tunes are fairly similar sounding and Ocean Wisdom does attack every track (so far) with his machine-gun rapping style. So far so good though. I'll finish up the album and then give it another listen.

Yeah Sn'B is a definite standout, that used to be on his soundcloud until about a year ago but i guess they took it down once they knew it was going to be on the album. It's hard for me to see how much he's influenced by grime given i never listen to it. I can recognize it on Doolally cus that's a proper grime flow, otherwise i'm guessing a bit really.

Not surprised a grime compilation is at the top though tbh.

Never got my head around grime. i've given it a few tries and quite recently gave a few JME and Skepta tracks a listen. Some of it's alright but none of it's made me want to get into it.

I'm not that into the later stuff although I can't deny Skepta and JME, but the stuff from the early 2000s is complete fire and a few of the classics are on that compilation. Pow, Oi, and Ghetto Kyote are legendary. Pow got banned in clubs because people would go too hard.

The thing about JME is that he's completely independent, so I have a lot of respect for him. Especially with Skepta going off and working with Kanye and whatnot, must be tough on JME to keep going independent with stuff like that happening right in front of him.

Yeh def some good Grime classics on it. Haha I remember when Pow got banned.
Btw Slimzee and Wiley are doing a show on Rinse FM live atm!
http://rinse.fm/player/
Definitely a throwback. (Wiley is one of the Godfathers of grime for those who don't know)

Y'know, i've just given JME another quick look on the off chance and this is flames, didn't know about this, Giggs kills it. That Kyote tunes alright aswell

Seen Kano on that tracklist. I've got that Home Sweet Home album in the shed somewhere lol, i remember liking a bit of it when it dropped but i've not heard it since. I'll have to dig it out and give it a go.

The Weeknd Reveals He Gave Almost Half An Album To Drake For 'Take Care'
The Weeknd said:
In an interview with Rolling Stone, The Weeknd revealed that while working with Drake, he gave Drizzy almost half of his album for what became arguably Drake's best album, "Take Care."

According to The Weeknd, songs he had written for his "House of Balloons" mixtape ended up on Drake's "Take Care." Back in 2013, "The Hills'" singer chalked it up to being "hungry."

"I was hungry. ... I was like, 'Dude, take anything,'" he said.

But now, The Weeknd revealed to Rolling Stone that he has nothing but gratitude towards Drake, whom he calls "my closest friend in the industry at that time."

"I gave up almost half of my album. It's hard. I will always be thankful — if it wasn't for the light he shined on me, who knows where I'd be. And everything happens for a reason. ... You never know what I would say if this success wasn't in front of me now."
