Hot takes making a final sweep of the albums of 2016, most of these being 1-2 listens through so they're mostly first impressions:
Big Baby D.R.A.M.'s D.R.A.M. - Decent, goofy album. Nothing offensively bad, but a few eye-roll worthy songs and just not too much that is actually worth talking about? I appreciate that this project exists with it's quirky, cheery style. Nothing really comes close to Broccoli on it though TBH, so it was ultimately a disappointment to me.
KiD CuDi's Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin' - Sonically this is pretty good TBH, the true follow-up to Satellite Flight. Ultimately, no real standouts or individual songs that recaptured the greatness of early CuDi and that's in part because I think he's pretty content just trying to harmonize with the production with his hums instead of tapping into his writing skills. Great for background music but not much more.
Roy Woods' Nocturnal - Not as good as Waking At Dawn, but it feels like a B-side to that project without the highs. It's kind of bleh TBH, and I thought Waking At Dawn was decent-to-good, but it had really high highs (Down Girl, Gwan Big Up Yourself). Instinct is pretty much the only song on here I'd go back to intentionally.
Run The Jewels' Run The Jewels 3 - Kind of polarized on this project, as I am on RTJ in general. It's always like they've got one foot in the lyrical-miracle-on-mediocre-beats, and one foot that has... found it's footing... where the beats and aggressive lyrics actually mesh and make for some legitimately tough talk and interesting cadences. In the latter category however, I enjoy Talk To Me, Legend Has It, Hey Kids (Bumaye), Panther Like A Panther, Everybody Stay Calm (best song). Generally, I think both MCs struggle on slower/downtempo songs, the second half of the album is much stronger, and the production really stands out in places.
Saba's Bucket List Project - Not bad, none of the songs are outright bad, and I don't mean to only make negative critiques because it's an okayish project, but it suffers from a kind of severe lack of identity. Fam's style is all over the place, and not in a cool way like how Theo London could flow all over Vibes. A lot of pocket flows that don't particularly go anywhere, don't feel like the production comes together all too well but it's got a bit of coherency to it. There are some great features that stand out, and the production is buttery smooth front-to-back, but ultimately I feel like I just listened to a lukewarm DJ mixtape as opposed to a fire solo project.
Noname's Telefone - Such a warm, coherent, beautiful listen from start to finish. It's got bars, a "feel" of musicality (might just be the boom bap influences; which are also appreciated), great delivery and singing, the lot. Just a feel-good and wholesome listen, in a very, very similar way to Coloring Book. Kind of a sister album to it in a lot of ways. If I had listened to this earlier it might have cracked higher on my AotY list, but it's moving it's way up quickly (reminds me a lot of when I listened to A Sucker For Pumps at the end of that year in haste).
