Troy Ave used a fake "R-Rated" title screen from Red vs. Blue in his video instead of a real one

Good book.

Yep. Haven't read an actual novel in forever, but I decided to pick up this one again. Kind of makes me wish I could fine some Rap music that deals with the same subject matter. Or maybe a really cool anti-western themed album.

I tried reading The Road a couple years ago. The writing wasn't punchy enough for me. I don't need a lot of activity in a plot, but the way McCarthy described the setting and characters didn't grab me. Gave up before the hundredth page. Is his style the same for his other books?

I believe Blood Meridian is apparently much less minimalistic, but I'm not too familiar with his work, Blood Meridian is the only book from him I've read.

Sort of. I think it's safe to say if you don't enjoy one, you're probably not going to enjoy the others. The Road isn't his best work IMO, but it's definitely still in his style.

God damn Tory is going really hard with the samples on Ch4xtape, 3 songs in and I've already heard Grind with Me, One Call Away & I Need a Girl.

Not sure if I like this because of Tory or all the throwback samples.

Yo what happened with the troy Ave thing? I read something briefly on Facebook he released a sextape as a video? I haven't been keeping up with hip hop news recently.

Not sure why people are calling it a "sex tape"; he made a music video where he fucks a chick and gets a blow job. I don't think it's clear they were even fucking in the video due to te angles/choice placement of hands and clothing.

If I understood right, he only made it when a real sex tape of his was about to be leaked (someone tried to blackmail him) and then he acted like that stolen sex tape was actually only made for an upcoming music video. Or something like that, lol. EDIT: Okay, maybe it was really his original plan to use parts of the video for the music video. Who knows. Still the biggest clown in the game.

The stuff in the music video is quite clearly a produced video with a camera man, about on the level of a Cinemax late night movie.. she even puts her hands in spots so you can't see shit.

Hot takes making a final sweep of the albums of 2016, most of these being 1-2 listens through so they're mostly first impressions:

Big Baby D.R.A.M.'s D.R.A.M. - Decent, goofy album. Nothing offensively bad, but a few eye-roll worthy songs and just not too much that is actually worth talking about? I appreciate that this project exists with it's quirky, cheery style. Nothing really comes close to Broccoli on it though TBH, so it was ultimately a disappointment to me.

KiD CuDi's Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin' - Sonically this is pretty good TBH, the true follow-up to Satellite Flight. Ultimately, no real standouts or individual songs that recaptured the greatness of early CuDi and that's in part because I think he's pretty content just trying to harmonize with the production with his hums instead of tapping into his writing skills. Great for background music but not much more.

Roy Woods' Nocturnal - Not as good as Waking At Dawn, but it feels like a B-side to that project without the highs. It's kind of bleh TBH, and I thought Waking At Dawn was decent-to-good, but it had really high highs (Down Girl, Gwan Big Up Yourself). Instinct is pretty much the only song on here I'd go back to intentionally.

Run The Jewels' Run The Jewels 3 - Kind of polarized on this project, as I am on RTJ in general. It's always like they've got one foot in the lyrical-miracle-on-mediocre-beats, and one foot that has... found it's footing... where the beats and aggressive lyrics actually mesh and make for some legitimately tough talk and interesting cadences. In the latter category however, I enjoy Talk To Me, Legend Has It, Hey Kids (Bumaye), Panther Like A Panther, Everybody Stay Calm (best song). Generally, I think both MCs struggle on slower/downtempo songs, the second half of the album is much stronger, and the production really stands out in places.

Saba's Bucket List Project - Not bad, none of the songs are outright bad, and I don't mean to only make negative critiques because it's an okayish project, but it suffers from a kind of severe lack of identity. Fam's style is all over the place, and not in a cool way like how Theo London could flow all over Vibes. A lot of pocket flows that don't particularly go anywhere, don't feel like the production comes together all too well but it's got a bit of coherency to it. There are some great features that stand out, and the production is buttery smooth front-to-back, but ultimately I feel like I just listened to a lukewarm DJ mixtape as opposed to a fire solo project.

Noname's Telefone - Such a warm, coherent, beautiful listen from start to finish. It's got bars, a "feel" of musicality (might just be the boom bap influences; which are also appreciated), great delivery and singing, the lot. Just a feel-good and wholesome listen, in a very, very similar way to Coloring Book. Kind of a sister album to it in a lot of ways. If I had listened to this earlier it might have cracked higher on my AotY list, but it's moving it's way up quickly (reminds me a lot of when I listened to A Sucker For Pumps at the end of that year in haste).

Passion, Pain, & Demon Slayin' has grown on me a lot. It's way too long but the production and melodies get me every time. Gave it an honorable mention nod.

Speaking of that, finally made my AOTY post. Good year brehs, from young and old alike.
My thoughts exactly also there are some moments where his singing sounds outright pitiful to me when he tries to go outside of his very limited range.

Love that list, kinda forgot about Ritualize which was in many ways was more a successful rap experiment than Atrocity or anything else.

Talk Back was also really close at times I wanted to switch it where I have Bucket List because the interludes are so cheesy.

Nice list you got there, I fucks with 8/10 on there heavily. Although I am surprised to see Atrocity as your #1, for me it's a really good album but in a bottom tier 10 way, not a real AOTY contender.

I need to man up and post my list when I get home tonight.

Yea, Saba album I wasn't too hot on especially considering the reception here.

Noname telefone is fire and addictive af. The way she gleefully bounces around on the beats just puts me in such a feel good mood. Can't see myself ever getting tired of that album

The Life of Pablo is the best album with the worst lyrics. It continues to grow on me and I honestly wasn't a fan at all but musically he delivered

Even still some of his most heartfelt moments are on this album

I would love to do these AOTY things but when they consist of dusty soundcloud projects like this H.N.I.C project that I know you checked out, I feel a little bit of an outcast.

This song is fucking heat.

And my AOTY was basically Jeremiah Jae - A Cold Night, an overlooked release that people (rightfully) don't think is really good anyway.

Love that track, reminds me of that early IllFightYou/Chester Watson dark lo-fi shit. I wanted to love A Cold Night but I think I need a more obvious somewhat gimmicky concept to really reel me in with Jae.

I was really feeling these projects too if anyone is doing any last minute considering:
