Shot an event(baby shower) this weekend and it confirmed exactly what I had thought about my gear.

I'm only posting 3 pics since I don't have approval to post them up so yeah.

But anyway, going to what I mentioned earlier... the good thing is that my Vivitar Series 1 28-90mm lens is fan-fncking-tastic. But, MF is too slow for an event, even for something as slow as a baby shower. There were many shots that I should've been able to capture but as those moments happened, I was still trying to find the focus so I missed those shots.

But at the same time, I had a feeling this was going to be the case so I'm not surprised. It just means that I'm probably gonna have to rock my kit lens when they're "action" shots and switch back to the Vivitar for slower moments.

Yikes. Pulled out my 60D today while exploring an abandoned hospital only to find my attached 35mm f2 was almost entirely in multiple pieces. I screwed it back together, however I did, and it works fine with no issues. I've sent in this lens multiple times for faulty AF. I mean.. It's working. Should I send it in or nah?

Also, sidebar. Just got cleared for passes to shoot two shows at the downtown venue. Beyond stoked for these bands!

I couldn't imagine trying to do an event with a bag full of MF lenses. See if you can find a good AF lens that'll also fit on the 610 you plan on getting. I'm not sure what your budget is but I see the Tamron 2.8 28-75 can be pretty cheap.

Yeah, getting events done on MF can be a pain at times. Live peaking makes it a lot easier but sometimes you misread it. Kinda thinking about a 24-70mm af lens for events except I don't get paid so I can't afford it. :x

Just do what I do and try to get one used, especially third party. I still have two lenses to finish paying off though.

That Tamron is actually on my list of gear to pick up once I start transitioning to AF. I'm still gonna keep my MF lenses for video work but I'll be going AF for photos.

I do other events where I'm set at a specific spot and everything's already figured out but I don't do moving photo events myself tbh because I knew that MF would slow me down lol.

Backdrop? What backdrop? This is all on location. I only added the moon and clouds on two photos, because it felt like the grey sky was too boring on its own :)
Yeah I mainly meant the moon and clouds.
That'd be easier if I didn't have to buy a $400 adapter to use Sigma lenses.
Holy shit. Every time I wish I went Mirrorless I'm reminded about why I'm glad I didn't. I might get one at some point as a "for fun" camera and just leave it at kit lens or something.

MF glass is perfect for video work though.

Like, if there aren't any surprises it's pretty alright doing mf. Usually have enough time to zone focus to pretty close then just a slight adjustment when its time to shoot, but surprise moments? Yeah those ain't happenin.

To be fair, were talking explicitly about getting adapted AF. Non AF adapting is like $20.
And I could get the native 28-70 for emount for $400 or so, I just don't want to lol.
Mirrorless is an MF Fans dream, but it certainly has a few drawbacks. But like he'll would I ever deal with trying to use an OVF.

I actually went from an evf to an ovf, it took some adjustment, but I'm honestly quite fine without it. Sucks the life out of your battery any way.

Hmm.. How would I explain. I know it's in part of the makeup, but it really feels a bit like a mask.

I go to a school which has film student, so I borrowed stuff from their side. Also there are journalists and radio students, as well as actors, who I get to be models easily. All of the people in those pics are from the acting line.

One thing I need is a camera. I got in this school with pictures taken with a friends camera and all of them were landscapes and animals. Now here though, with a supply of models I really have had fun doing my own projects with people. I now have used schools Sony Nex-5, but with no additional lens, it just isn't enough. So I borrow cameras from fellow students to take pics. I need one, but as this school is expensive (in Finland standards), it has to wait.

I could take pics with it in the fall with using sunlight, but I hate the cold, so now I have been just shooting inside. I'm just beginning to learn all the things you can do with light. You can really do good stuff with not so great camera with light and post-editing. Things would be a lot easier with expensive gear, but learning the hard way has it's benefits so with a good camera, lenses and lighting things seem so easy every time I get to use them :)

Ah ha! I thought the same as I was editing and sort of kept going with that. I was going for a colorful and surreal take on Americana when I set up the area. It was actually going to be a different style of shoot involving colorful smoke to compliment the body paint but things did not turn out how I wanted so I just thought on my feet. I will show another from the set once I posted it in a bit. It's not my usual style but I try to adapt to whatever happens.

And that is really cool! Good job. And yes, even with an iphone and using light sources properly, you can make a photo look beautiful and interesting.

Once I'm caught up with my editing work for photoshoots I've done the past week, I am going into personal project mode (unless a couple paid offers fall into place). I want to work on more lighting techniques and also keep advancing my knowledge of color theory and photoshoot. I am never satisfied unless I keep evolving my techniques. There's a place I see myself going and it's going to take a lot of effort.

Love the quality of these. You do good. I work down the road from where the event took place.

Thanks for the compliment! I don't know if we've talked about it before-- I lived in Metrowest from 2006 until we built a house out in Clermont last August. It was a lot easier/faster to get to the tournament before moving, that's for sure.

Are you on Instagram?

Apparently the Google Nik Collection is now free- never used it but I love color editing in LR so I'm excited to give it a shot. Only used VSCO in the past.

Time will tell if it was a good idea or not but my Brother and I decided to ditch Flickr and build our own website...and that website is now live!

Would love to know what you think!

One of my images from Iceland, where I was lucky enough to go into an unspoilt ice cave.

Devon, my home county, England (photo by my Brother)

Somerset, England (photo by my brother)

Another from Iceland, just because!

Those are really good, I really like the female singer at the end, good job

Thank you very much :D
I do like it as well. I wasn't too sure about the red/orange light in the face at first, but it's really grown on me and I kept it in colour instead of b&w.

The band is called End of The Dream, if you like Evanescnece/Nightwish type of music definitely check them out.

Does the female just sing? Cause when that Nightwish dude intros a song I just skip it.

TIL that my Canon 70-210 FD F4 is pretty crappy.

Not damped, soft as all hell wide open (you can forget about using F4 for ANYTHING), and the sliding barrel is awful for maintaining a given focal length.

Anyone else have any good vintage/cheap zooms? 70-200 or thereabouts.

Also, I might be shooting a wedding soon-ish. Planning on using a 24-70 or so, but not sure if the kit lens 28-70 for FE is good enough. Anyone have any experience? As long as it's decent, I don't care if the Zeiss is better so much that the 24-70 isn't bad.

EDIT: Yeah looking at Flickr it's definitely decent. I'll pick it up sometime.

Every time someone posts photos from Iceland, I want to go to Iceland. I should seriously go. These photos are epic.
The website looks good, although my personal critique would be that it's a little bit dated design. Out of all the designs available on the .photo plans that is. The main reason I'm saying this is because of the curved edges on the photos and the fact you have to click 3+ times to get to a full size image. 'Modern' websites don't ask you to click more than twice and present all images on a single page in large format. But of course, that is a personal preference. I'm just aware that people nowadays hate clicking and are used to tumblr infinite scroll.

She's the only singer, yes. They're also a Dutch band, you should know 'em :p

I don't see why you have Somerset and rest of the UK as individual galleries. Also when in the gallery view the titles cover most of the image when viewing the website on my phone. Most people won't bother clicking through to find out what the picture is.
Ditching Flickr doesn't make a lot of sense if you are trying to get traffic to your new site. You should use social sites like flickr, 500 px, Instagram etc to direct people to your own site if your intention is to sell your photos, otherwise how would anyone ever find your site in the first place? Your photos are great.

Took my 70-210 FD out for a bit today, here's some of the results.

Probably one of the nicest photos I got out of today.

I cannot recommend Iceland enough, It's stunning. I was unlucky on a few of the big locations with the weather but by and large I was amazingly fortunate to get such good weather during winter. I was there for ten days and barely scratched the surface. Not seen any of the middle or north of the island.
Thanks for the feedback - The gallery is a bit fiddly I admit but it's a start. I've used smugmug and although I've kept away from their templates as much as possible (nothing against them, I just wasn't keen) the gallery options were limited. The site probably works best if you don't view full size at the moment but I'll look to see what I can do. My ethos right from the start was no compromise on the images, so I may have taken a wrong turn somewhere. Appreciate you taking the time to look, thanks.

Amazing. Especially the first one.
Thanks!

Devon and Somerset are where we live (I'm in Devon, Brother in Somerset), so we naturally have more images of these counties than elsewhere. It didn't make sense to have a gallery per county when we may only have one image in there. The photos up already are nowhere near all of them. We could just have one gallery for UK but people locally like to see work near to them so we decided to split it out this way.
I may change the gallery around at some point but I admit it isn't brilliant. Your comment about the cover title, is this when just viewing the thumbnails? I think I see what you mean. I might make the thumbnails bigger but I don't want to ditch the text on each image it was important to us to put a little story behind the photo. We like that sort of thing.

I've used Flickr for years and more recently 500px but I just find it a popularity contest, people just commenting on your photos in order to get a comment back again. In terms of getting hits to our site, yesterday I got more hits to the website than I've done in years on Flickr! I had over 10,000 hits in a day, which I think is pretty good going. Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/johnsbrothersphotography) is proving to be the biggest source of hits so far.
But going by your comments I think I will rethink a little bit and actually start a new flickr\500px\Instagram page with the intention of bringing people to my site, by in large it won't work but you get some hits. Just more to manage that's all!
As for making money my expectations are almost zero, if I can cover my costs for hosting (£150ish) in a year I'll be very happy, otherwise I'm OK taking a loss.

Then home and back on more comfortable portrait ground :)
Kinda trying to make my portraits more messy and grungey. Really love Juergen Teller's style and trying to work in more of that influence..

Long time no see PhotoGAF! feels like ages since I've been using a camera regularly. Finally finished a roll of Ilford Delta 400 I had in my Bronica since last Autumn so decided to process it today :)
