Then home and back on more comfortable portrait ground
Kinda trying to make my portraits more messy and grungey. Really love Juergen Teller's style and trying to work in more of that influence..

Car show pics. I'm not on JongKookie's level, but some are at least decent.
Car shows just have too many people that'll block your damn shot, plus my god those cars are either dusty or smudgy, but whatever. I have a picture of a BMW and didn't care for it, didn't touch Mercedes Benz, I don't think I did much with Porsche some stuff was just stale to me. There was a BMW M1 there that really wanted to photograph but couldn't get too close to it cause it was upstairs in some fucking owners lounge area, fucking bastards. There most interesting car, sectioned off in an area where they people just had Iphones taking pictures of it. A rep was like "we don't make that anymore" no shit that's why I wanted pictures of it stupid. I consider the modern BMW's to be cookie cutter, but the M1 is awesome.Lol I'm not even that good. The thing with car photography is that the car has to have something unique to begin with, otherwise it's just another car in a sea of other cars and it also helps a lot to know about the car.
For example, the pic with the red Acura is beautiful, it captures a lot of it's interesting lines/shapes/whatever of the NSX. But as a car enthusiast, I know the car is kinda meh so it doesn't really grab me as much despite the picture being beautiful. What I'd love to see more is the green Audi R8. Now while the car is relatively old and not that unique, the color, British Racing Green, is kind of a legendary color with a lot of history and it's quite rare in today's world so seeing it is awesome. It's details like that imo that elevate car photography to the next level.
That said auto shows are actually one of the best places to learn car photography simply because the lighting will ALWAYS be perfect in every nook and cranny of the car.
I think with on camera you pretty much just need either a diffuser or softbox on that flash. I've had some pretty bad results with bare flash, mind you it also depends on the skin color. Some colors just throw like all of the flash right back at your camera and it's impossible to fix in post.ok following my previous post, I tried some on-camera(ish) flash options. Went for the obvious Terry Richardson party look, turned out quite alright actually. Not sure it'll look good for someone with heavy makeup though, I have a feeling it'll be extremely unflattering.

Love the framing on this.
Did you use an on-camera flash? Any modifiers at all or did you diffuse it in the wall? Looks pretty direct to me, but top left and still a bit diffused. I'm looking into making the hotshoe work as there's this new trend on conventions here that you can't carry any lighting equipment that you aren't directly holding while taking the photo. So I'm looking into diffusers and brackets. If Terry Richardson can make it work, surely there's a way.![]()

Only other picture of the R8 I had:
NYIAS had some Mothers people there, obviously just not enough. I actually saw them do stuff too, just nothing on the cool looking shit. Any idea what that red classic Alfa Romeo was?Yeah, I looked through your Flickr and saw that. It's really interesting that Audi is doing a BRG R8... I didn't even know they were doing that lol.
Anyway, the dust and grime on the show cars are a fault of the show staff actually. Got a buddy who's part of a detail shop here in DFW and they get contracted every year for the local auto show and they've got at least 5 people roaming the show floor and cleaning the cars. I'm sure NYIAS is a lot bigger than the DFW auto show so maybe they didn't have enough people.
And yeah, a lot of companies/car clubs/dealerships do exclusive sections like a "owners club/area" in those auto shows. I know a couple of the dealerships here in DFW have their own "sections" and you had to have bought a car there to get in or be interested in one where you can chat with somebody about it. The dealership I got my Miata from sends me an invite every year but they're a Cadillac and Infiniti dealer and those cars are waaaaaaaaaaay out of my price range so I just get in there for the free coffee and couches haha.
These are great. Wow.
Here are some of mine from Memphis May Fire & Killswitch Engage
Ah i like yours, it's cool. I think with it mounted you just lose a lot of shadow defining things, with it being so straight.
With mine i was using a strobe on a stand with just a small reflector, positioned just slightly higher and to the left of where a hotshoe mounted speedlight would be.
When working with a speedlight and, no room for stands and things, ive taken it off the camera and either held it around the same area and fired it wirelessly. Just to allow me to control the shadow a little more.
I've never done conventions, but this photo i took in a packed bar after a pride march, and this shoot i was either holding it or getting a friend to stand off to the side. Used a small Orbis ringlight attachment to the speedlight to make the light a little bigger but keeping it hard and not diffuse.
It can be pretty unflattering. Depending on the model and things and taking more work in lightroom to soften things up.
Maybe worth looking at things like the Gary Fong lightsphere. I think is used for weddings / parties where you want things to be a little softer than the harsh Terry Richardson edgey style.
Why are people I follow on Instagram telling me to turn on post notifications for them, because it's "gone all Facebook"? Have I missed something?
Yeah, I read that elsewhere. Not happy about them fucking with the timeline, but I won't be enabling notification spam as a "fix" for the problem.People are being drama llamas because Instagram's feed is going to be algorithmically arranged instead of in strict chronological order. Some people are reacting by begging for you to set Instagram to notify you about every time they post, so you "don't miss any of their posts." Why this would be a net positive for YOU rather than them is left as an exercise for the reader.

It's ultimately going to be a tool for promoted shit.I don't know why they need to fix something that isn't broken, I like it being chronological and I can just scroll. Is not a positive change for anyone imo

I believe the point of this is to see more things that may have been lost, because they were posted at an odd hour. I believe a lot of more 'popular' instagram accounts got the hang of when's the 'rush hour' and when people are more likely to scroll (just like twitter, late at night and in lunch breaks) and got advantage of that.
Wait so I shouldn't put my stuff on Instagram?I hope this isn't the case.
I follow people from all over the world and I still see the posts from people on the opposite end of my time zone simply because I will scroll through all of it. Organizing the posts by popularity or whatever means that I'd actually see less of the obscure stuff... like my ex's half-asleep selfie at 4AM local time or the drunken shenanigans I participated in but don't remember.
To be fair though, I'm posting a lot less of my "pro level" pics on Instagram after I was told by a marketing agency that your pictures can basically be used by Instagram in any way they want. I just now resort to iPhone pics exclusively tbh.
Wait so I shouldn't put my stuff on Instagram?
Instagram does not claim ownership of any Content that you post on or through the Service. Instead, you hereby grant to Instagram a non-exclusive, fully paid and royalty-free, transferable, sub-licensable, worldwide license to use the Content that you post on or through the Service, subject to the Service's Privacy Policy...
I hope this isn't the case.

That's what they told me.
That's from the terms of use. What this means is up to your interpretation but the agency basically interprets it as "we can use your pics in any way we want" so I've kinda decided to stop posting my stuff on there too.
People will just crop out your watermark, there is no getting around people using your photos for whatever they want once you post it anywhere online. Pretty sure google photos had some similar clause in their terms of service that caused an uproar when that was first launched as well that ended up changing their terms of service.Yikes. At least I watermark my pictures now.
Well damn. No way around shit then.People will just crop out your watermark, there is no getting around people using your photos for whatever they want once you post it anywhere online. Still looking for a good night to get some star photos done. Love how sharp this lens is. Played around a bit with the free Nik Collection on these as well.

What is this awesome looking thing?

Wow. I think this is the best low-lit capture I've seen (for movement). Very impressed.
