GAF Running Club |OT| - Couch to Marathons, All abilities

Sharp heel pain, but only when I stretch.

When I raise my left foot onto a bench or stair, and pull my toes back, I have this incredibly sharp pain that feels like a couple of blades trying to poke out of the back of my heel, about 1.5 inches up. I can run my normal hour without really noticing it though.

I took a full week off from running and Tennis, but I really want to get back to training for my first half-marathon, which is only 10 weeks away. The pain is still there, again, only when I stretch, but it is significantly better than before.

Fairly certain this is my Achilles tendon, but just wondering if anyone else ever had this. I'm going to ease back into running, and I will go to the doctor if it gets any worse, but is there anything I can do to minimize my risk while still exercising? i.e. should I wear a compression sleeve? Should I ice after every run? I stretch, but perhaps not enough?

I'm not sure if this is the thread to ask, but can anybody recommend a good pair of running shoes? I started out wearing ASICS Nimbus shoes, but they are wearing our really fast on me and the back inside gets holes which lead to me getting horrible blisters. I tried to switch to some Mizuno Wave Rider shoes, but the left side of my foot hurts when I walk/run in them.

I don't know what else brand to be trying out and really need to grab a new pair of shoes.

I haven't been able to find any compression sleeves that give relief on the tendon, but it might benefit you to wear something on your calf since it's all connected. Taping it with some KT tape might help.

Best advice would be to go to a dedicated running shoe store and work with one of the people at the store.

Everyone in here probably has their own preference of shoe because that's what works for them. Example, I have flat feet so the type of shoe I want would be different than someone who has normal arches.

Ive have read somewhere that If it is your achilles tendon then stretching can make it worse. It's like, your achilles is in pain and you pull on it so it has no chance to heal properly.

To strengtening your achilles you can do eccentric heel lifts and ice is always a good thing.

This is very personal so the shoes i run in can hurt you and the shoes you run in can hurt me.

I would go to a store and try some and decide what feels and runs good for you.

I looked up a video on the eccentric heel lifts, and that seems like it will definitely hit the spot I'm talking about. I'll try it this afternoon, and then be sure to ice after my run. In addition to not wanting to further injure the tendon, it's hot so I'm probably going to keep it short.

I had an achilles injury a bit more than a year ago now. Based on what I found out about it, icing, compression sleeves, etc. aren't a lot of help with your achilles. Stretching in general isn't great for it and it sounds like you may be over-stretching it based on when it gives you trouble.

The best results I've had for it are heel drops. I.e. stand on the edge of steps and slowly lower your heel one foot at a time. Raise it back up with the other foot or both feet and then repeat.

Edit: just read about the lifts. Unless I'm misreading, that's the opposite. Everything I've seen said to avoid the upward motion with the affected heel/ankle and only do the lowering part.

Glad to help!

Good luck and give it time and you will be running in no time.

I just ran 15k for the first time in two years and I think I'm dying. My whole body is cramping, including my jaw. I'll never run again...
I'll probably run on monday.

Guys, the early bird pricing for the San Francisco marathon just opened.

Anyone know the usual price for the marathon? After searching I've seen people who reportedly paid from USD$165 to about USD $200.

Also, how long does the early bird pricing last?

Thanks

I think I need JESUS too.

I'm afraid I can't really help, but if it's anything like the Barcelona Marathon the price usually goes up when a number of registrations threshold is crossed.

Looking forward to seeing the results for the women's marathon today and men's next week.

Yeah, made sure to go out early enough that I'd be home and ready (showered + cold beer in hand) to catch the girls' marathon. Did you see Mo Farah's race last night?

I missed it completely! Read about it this morning after my long run, and man, that must have been exhilarating to watch. That last lap...

Training for my first half marathon in September, I ran 8.5 miles last weekend which is the furthest I've ever ran (10k previously the furthest).

But my running club were running a trial run of the HM that we're doing in September, slightly shorter due to busy roads etc. So 10.4 miles ran in 1:50:05 which I'm pleased with as I want to keep as close to 10 min miles as possible with an aim of getting around 2:20 at the actual half marathon.

Achilles started aching a lot around 9 miles and is still sore now so need to rest that up but super pleased with today!

ay lmao Dibaba finishes her 1500m finals 20 whole seconds slower than her WR. Yeah yeah, track meet w/ pacers versus championship race. Still, 20s slower!

Here comes a stupid-dumb comparison but (20/240)x10=0.83s, that's kinda like Bolt running the 100m finals in 10.40s.

Haven't seen the race, would be curious to see what happened if someone finds it on youtube.

3000m steeple great Kemboi DQ'ed on technicality to rob him of bronze on his last race before retirement? Sounds like a job for...
I actually like Mahiedine, but that was super douchy and unsportsmanlike. And petty. And fucking cheap. What a douche. lol

It's too bad he didn't get to do a victory lap, I hear there are mascots waiting to get punched out there.

Thanks, I hadn't considered that. Since it's the 40th anniversary it should be soon.
I think I'll go.

Glad Meb finished, happy for Rupp (although I was hoping he'd come back and take silver). Real happy Centro took the 1500 (no, I'm not American).

I have super flat feet and over pronate a ton, basically any running leads to my outside ankle muscles to over strains and I can barely walk for days after.

Any shoe/insert recommendations? I have read the Nike Lunarglides are good for this. Dont want to break the bank, would like to stick aounrd $80ish

If the flat feet are indeed the cause of the overpronation (as opposed to say, tight or weak muscles) then I'd recommend seeing a medical professional so that you can get some orthoses made specifically for your feet (they may be more expensive but you'll be able to use them with any shoes, so your ankles may benefit in the long run).

In any case, if it's feasible, try to talk with an orthotics specialist first so that you can get some real advice on how to proceed.

Ran my first 5km "contest", Bellmanstaffeten, which is a relay run for teams of 5 (total 25km all 5 included), finished on 28:25. Sort of disappointed I didn't get in at below 28 minutes.

Haven't really been training for it, got called in by co-workers 2 weeks ahead of the run, just done 2km treadmill warmups for work outs, and the last week before the run I did a few 3.5km runs outdoors.

So, since running is boring af in general, are there any exercises one can do other than running to be better at running? :) Keeping in mind, I only started getting in shape since March of this year.

Next weekend, I got Tough Viking (the reason I started working out, my boss tricked me into signing up), 15km with 20+ obstacles spread out. Not looking forward to it.

Wanted to my first marathon, and would love to do the Chicago Marathon. Saw it takes place October 9th, perfect timing! Plenty of time to train up a bit and can make a great weekend out of it. Annnnd registration is closed (probably has been for awhile).... Damn

the lottery for chicago usually opens in march and closes in april. u can't sleep on a marathon major. i got in through guaranteed entry thankfully so didn't have to deal with the lottery.

7 weeks isn't enough time to train especially if it's your first marathon. sure it can done but respect the distance. most typical marathon plans are 16-18 weeks.

Closing in on the date for my first half marathon .... Sept 10. Just a couple of weeks left and I just hit 10 miles today with a time of 1:47:30. I know that isn't impressive, but I'm still holding onto a ton of weight...250lbs...and it was the first time that 13.1 felt doable. I think the main part of my training for the final weeks will be to drop 10-15 more pounds.

Yeah, I was a little daft thinking I could just register so quickly for an event so large. I'll look for next year though. Can still register for the one in Minneapolis on October 9th as well so I might shoot for that now, especially if it improves my odds of getting in and not getting stuck in a rear corral.

Not sure why you don't think I could be ready in 7 weeks? I usually put in 35-40+ miles a week already...

35-40 miles is an ok base to start a training cycle but 7 weeks is too short to prepare yourself for a marathon unless you are experienced and did specific marathon stuff during that base.

If it's your first time, the first 5-6 weeks you might be able to build your long run to around 2h. Then you have to take the rest of the time easy to be ready for the race. That's it. No time for marathon specific workouts, no time for long term adaptation to fatigue and higher mileage (it takes up to 3 months).

Don't rush into a marathon. There is nothing magical about completing a marathon. Respect the distance and run a race you can be proud of. It will be a much better experience than enduring through a slow shuffle.

There's nothing wrong starting in a rear corral if that's where they place people running your pace. Starting in a front corral if you don't belong there is frustrating for everyone behind that will have to go around you in the early packed race and it's much more chances for you to start too fast and blow your race early.

Did the race bellmanstaffeten last week with my work. It was a 5km race and i came in on 20.26 which im happy with during the circumstances, my current shape etc.

Now i need to reload to a half Marathon which is happening in 3 weeks. This year i am coming for YOU, old personal record!

Well this is the last year of guaranteed entry for Chicago which was sub 3:15 assuming your under 40. It'll definitely help u get into a better corral the following year though if u get in through the lottery.

U do have a better base than most people going into their first but the marathon is a different beast compared to half marathons and below. U have to find nutrition that works for u during long runs (some people have to find alternates to gels and gel blocks since their stomachs can't handle it). At this point of the marathon cycle you should already be at around the 18 range for long runs and going up to 20's the next following weeks. Your legs just don't get instantly used to it. Imo your just asking to be another victim who hits the wall around 18-20 and is miserable the last 10k.

I had a horrible experience my first marathon in Central Park(i only was 6 months into running and ran 20-25 mpw). This Chicago will be my 9th and i'm up to 70s weekly at this point of the cycle. Just giving my friendly suggestion from what i learned the past 3 years of doing this silly distance. Wish u luck in whatever u decide to do.

Cool, what's your goal?

Realistically i think 1.35 is doable, with my pb being 1.37
If i have a good day i think i can do around 1.33 , (4.24/km pace)

I did not get a good sleep the night before the race, and haven't trained as much tough sessions as i ideally would want to have done. Remember, never compare your own progress and results against others. Its extremely easy to get caught in that loop, and iv been there myself many times during the 6+ years i have been running now.

Yeah, Jack Daniels places your 5K time on the same level as 1:34 on the semi. Sounds doable, if you've had time to do some long runs, and depending where you fall on the speed/endurance spectrum. Good luck! ;D

Had a bad run yesterday: my heartrate was getting way too high way too soon for the pace I was running at (175bpm at 4:50/km, which is ridiculous), so I had to cut the run short. Definitely not a pleasant feeling.

I'm guessing it was due to the heat (although it didn't feel hotter than other days), but I may take it easy on the next run just in case. We'll see.

Yeah, happens. Did you feel weird as well, or was it just the HR monitor? They sometimes inexplicably crap out for whatever reason. But yeah, the heat, maybe something you ate, maybe tired a little bit, bad days just happen.

Indeed. I only thought to look at the HRM because I felt my heart thumping way too fast. As you say, sometimes you just have a bad day.

Did my local parkrun for the first time in over 3 months this morning. Haven't felt very fast recently and I think it's because I've been missing out on my weekly 5k race.

Forgot how tough this lumpy little course is, feeling a little sore right now. Also doesn't help when you drop your car key and have to stop and scramble back for it :D

Got a rowing machine for cross-training - anyone use one? I'm taking it easy but it seems like a nice way to warm up and down either side of a run.

Finally finished C25K! I had a nice little burst of speed at the end as well there.
Congrats! What's next? 10K?

I have one, which I never use anymore. Been trying to get back into it but I'm dragging my feet a little. I used it a lot for those days when I don't wanna get out running but I want to do some cardio, either rest/non-running day, or if it's too hot out. It's supposedly great for cross training, but aside from burning some calories, I've never felt any real benefit to it running-wise. I might have been doing it wrong.

It is, I started on Friday. Getting your pace right makes jogging so much easier I'd never have thought it.

My gym has three Concept2 Model Ds (finally replaced the busted old rowing machines this summer) and I've been using them to warm up instead of the ellipticals (since those feel too much like running sometimes) on my cross-training days.

I feel it compliments running well enough, and if for one reason or another some CTday I can't get on a bike I'll jump onto the rowing machine for sure.

I'm guessing one program starts where the first one ends so the transition is somewhat smooth? In any case, congrats on finishing C25K!

Yes, you can download 10k from the 5k app. 10k app actually includes the 5k app content anyway, but I digress. And thank you :)

Thanks for the replies re: rowing. I was using my bike when I physically couldn't run (hurt), but find it hard to get on the bike when I know I can run instead. Once I'm more organised I'm hoping to be able to jump on it in the morning before work just quickly, and force myself to continue the strength exercises the physio gave me to get through some noob injuries. Planning and doing though, two different things...

Speaking of planning, I've not quite been doing so well with marathon training. My first marathon is 6 weeks away now and I've arranged to do too many other races around it. And it seems to have come around quickly. I'm not going for a time with this one, just want to get around safely. My brother is doing the same one and I'm hoping to be able to use him for pacing as he's got a few under his belt now and I am terrible at this side of things. He's been doing hard trail marathons and just did his first ultra (35m but ran 42.5 as he got lost lol)... I suppose I'm just feeling a bit unprepared, I've only run the distance twice and have no plan for fueling or... I'm waffling because I know I need to get on this lol

With regards to training, I'd stop doing long runs (~32km) three weeks before the marathon so that you get to the starting line well rested. If you have already run the distance before then don't worry, you'll be fine :)

Logistics-wise, try to find out how the fueling stations are going to be distributed during the race and which products will be provided (something like this ideally).

Knowing beforehand where the water/isotonic stations are located will give you an idea whether you need to take extra water with you, just empty bottle-carrier or nothing at all.

If you plan on using the gels provided by the race this gives you time to test if they'll agree with your stomach or if you need to look at alternatives.

Halv marathon coming up this week on Saturday Sept 10th.

Body and legs feel great, and the last weeks of training have been solid.
Ideally i would like to loose about 1-1,5kg in weight to Saturdays race, which i most likely can do by being smart with what kind of food i put into my body.

Ran a 5k this morning. Was a little disappointed that i didn't push myself during the race. Was scared of getting injured since i been running 70 mpw the past couple weeks and about to enter the peak part of training for Chicago in 5 weeks. Sometimes racing gets too mental :p. Got 5th overall with a 23 second PR(last 5k was last summer).

5:47, 5:49, 5:38, and 5:15 the last .10
